1 A unique selection of World War I and Golden Age laser cut short kits and plans The AerodromeRC News By and For Electric Flight Enthusiasts VOL 1 - NO 12 December 2005 By Kurt Bengtson E This is the twelfth issue of the webzine and it is customary to look back over the past year to reflect on the publication. I have focused the tone of the webzine on scale modeling and relevant historical bases. We have had participation from many contributors and content has been substantial. Subjects as diverse as how to setup a model building area to book reviews of histories of World War I. We have featured articles highlighting new models including salient details of the models construction. We added the Did You Know side bar factoids as a fun feature. We featured a free plan, a DeHavilland DH.1, donated by Ian Easton. Feedback from those who have written indicated that the project is valuable and desired. We have indexed the past issues on the webzine archive web page. The index shows the considerable content that we have assembled in the past twelve issues. I have had requests from newcomers to scale modeling for information on how to get started and have referred to the webzine as an excellent source of information. I also have found that the effort has been valuable for me to learn new things about these subjects. It has been more difficult to assemble the content each month as time went on. However, many times, I was surprised at the final version as I was convinced that there was not enough information for that issue. Several times I thought that I couldn t find the time or content for one more issue only to see another one simply pop out. So it seems that the webzine, like much of AerodromeRC, has a life of it s own. Who knows what the future holds for this project, but it has been fun and rewarding for me and I think I can say the same for the contributors. Without their help, the webzine would have been a one dimensional, one-man show. The contributions that they give make the webzine much more interesting and personally, help me to carry the project forward. My heartfelt thanks goes to all who helped. I I 1 E 1 B T : Q B 1 B E P 2 B R : T C B F 2 H CV BUILDING TIP: QUICK BUILDING By Bert Ayers One of problems with adding flying wires and pull-pull cables to our models is how to secure the ends of the cable. I usually like to crimp and CA glue a small loop at each end. I usually spend a lot time making crimps. Cutting 1/8th inch aluminum tubes about 1/8 inch long, deburring the ends and discarding about a quarter of them. I went to a store that sells a variety of beads and trinkets for those that like to make beaded things. To my delight I found pre-made CRIMPS. They have 1.1 mm, 1.3 mm and 1.5 mm I.D. x 1/8 inch long. Wow--- what a labor saver! Beadalon, West Chester, PA B E P By Steven Jones I ran across these miniature brass pins at Micromark, I feel they are a good candidate for mounting flying wires and are possibly strong enough for functional flying wires on smaller models. I haven t tested them yet to see how strong they are other than taking a pair of pliers to them and trying to bend them. I plan to use them in some of the models I have ordered from you. Steven, I have weighed these and they are only about 0.1 gram each! Thanks for the tip. Kurt

2 Page 2 B R : T C B F T C B F : A I E E F A B F Review By: Kurt Bengtson There are situations when a scale modeler or model designer needs a reference work, which is an overview of an entire genre. The book discussed here is an excellent example of this type of work. The scope of the book is said to be an illustrated encyclopedia of every fighter ever built and flown. I have not checked to verify this claim but I can say that the volume of the work is amazing and the level of detail is excellent. Most aircraft are featured with a photograph and accompanied by a thumbnail-sized three view. While not up to the standards of the Windsock Datafile series, these three views are often the only source and can be suitable with additional photographs for a design to be produced. A paragraph with historical details accompanies the photograph. In this section, the dimensions of most of the aircraft are listed including performance figures. For selected aircraft, a very detailed three-dimensional internal construction view is featured. These special views are usually full page or two page features and are very useful for resolving how internal structures relate to external features. The subjects for these special views are typically ones with considerable historical interest but occasionally, a rare one is featured. For example, one view is an Aviatik Berg D.I In some of the entries; color profiles with sample color schemes are presented. The time period covered extends to modern fighters, which means that for my interests, every fighter relevant to me is represented. While the book is coffee table sized and often sold as a bargain book, I found that I am constantly referring to it as a serious reference. I use it as a place to start and sometimes find that this book is the only source of information on extremely rare fighters from WWI and the Golden Age. The copyright in the book indicates that for review purposes, content may be reproduced. Here are some excerpts of the book to illustrate what I have indicated. At that time, I was living in Holland close to Brussels and one day decided to present myself with a visit to this museum that has its origins in I did not expect much from the visit until I found this Halberstadt. I could not believe what my eyes were seeing! This airplane was captured from the Germans in Belgium in 1918 and sent right away to the museum! No restoration was ever done since that day, and I even doubt if they moved this bird at all. I spent more than one hour with the thing, and felt a kind of exhilarate sensation of being transported to that year. This is a real Time Transporter Machine.
