There are WARNING boxes and boxes with useful INFO. Remember that with the FOUR Divisions, EVERYONE can race! 1 GENERAL 1.1 In order to race at the Antelope Valley District of Boy Scouts of America s Tumbleweed 200 Pinewood Derby Race Fundraiser, the participant must enter in one of the following vehicle classes: Vintage These pinewood derby cars are at least 10 years of age and that you can prove that you raced when you were in Cub Scouts. They must be in their original racing configuration and no alterations and/or modifications since they were first raced is allowed. Sportsman These pinewood derby cars abide by the greatest restrictions but are the easiest and least expensive to construct. Challenger These pinewood derby cars allow relaxed restrictions in areas such as wheels, axels and body configurations. Outlaw If you want to go fast, this is the class! These pinewood derby vehicles have the relaxed restrictions of the Challenger class and they more. Also relaxed is the weight restriction, dynamic weights, axle bears, and some propulsion devices are allowed. These cars require creativity and ingenuity in their design. 1.2 For the Tumbleweed 200 Pinewood Derby Race Fundraiser, the participants must be at least 21 years old. 1.3 This document is the rules for the Challenger Class. If you are entering in the Vintage, Challenge, or Unlimited class please refer to the rules for your specific class. 1.4 The car must be built for the current Pinewood Derby Racing Season. NO REPEATS or REPAINTS. 1.5 A completed car purchased from a third party is not allowed. 1.6 The car may not be sent to third party facilities for tuning or other performance enhancements. 1.7 No Proxy Racing. Only the Racer may enter his car for the Tumbleweed 200 Pinewood Derby Race Fundraiser. This means that the Racer must be present to enter his car into the racing competition. 2 BODY 2.1 The main body structure (chassis) must be made of wood. The car design may be enhanced by the addition of other stable materials such as plastic or metal. Any additions must be firmly attached, non-moving, and meet car size specifications. Page 1 of 10
2.2 The car must meet the following specifications: Width: not to exceed 2 3/4 inches Figure 1 - Inside & Outside Wheel Specifications Length: not to exceed 7 inches Figure 2 - Length, Height, Wheelbase, & Clearance Requirements Weight: not to exceed 5.00 ounces ( grams). Weight shall be less than or equal to 5.00 ounces ounces is acceptable, but ounces is too heavy. The readings of the official race scale will be considered final. The car may be hollowed out and built to the maximum weight by the addition of wood, metal, plastic, paint, or decals only, provided it is securely built into the body or firmly affixed to it. No loose materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car Height: not to exceed 5 inches Clearance: The wheels are the only part of the car allowed to touch the track Center rail width: Wheels must clear center guide rails, no less than 1 3 /4 inches minimum. NOTE: Even though the lane strips are typically only 1/4 high. The extra clearance is to allow the car to go from the sloped portion of the tract to the flat portion without dragging. Page 2 of 10
The following guidelines are intended to help you construct a car with the necessary clearance for most tracks. If any question arises about a car s clearance during check in, race inspectors should place the car on the track to verify that only the wheels can touch the track. Car bottom: to clear a filled center rail, the bottom of the car should be no less than 3/8 inch from the surface. Fenders: Fenders or other body parts may extend below 3/8 inch from the track surface. Remember the guide rail width so the fenders do not rub. Weights: To aid in a safe stop at the end of the track, we recommend that you insert weight inside the body or place it on the top of the car. Avoid placing thick (over 1/8 ) weight on the bottom of the car as that may destabilize the car on the stop section. 2.3 Wheelbase: the distance between the center of the front and rear wheel must be no less than 4 inches and no more than 4.5 inches. 2.4 Front: Narrow pointed front ends are allowed. The front end is allowed to be modified. 2.5 At least 4 wheels must be attached to the sides of the car body. Each wheel must be attached to the car s wood chassis with a legal axle. Although at least 4 wheels are required, it is not required that all 4 wheels touch the track surface. Most of the fastest cars have one front wheel raised slightly and not touching. The rationale for 4 wheels is that it ensures the car will stay on the track and not slide off the center rail and collide with another car. 2.6 Each attached wheel must not be angled (canted) more than 20 degrees from vertical. 2.7 The front most and rear most wheels must be positioned across the body from one another. 2.8 The complete inside and outside lettering of each wheel must be visible when the wheel is attached to the body. Page 3 of 10
NEW STUFF Wheel Air Dams and Interior Wheel weights: Any covering of the interior of the wheel must be transparent (clear) and if using interior wheel weights there must be a slot that allows for rotating the wheel for interior inspection. 2.9 "ADD-ONS" such as such as steering wheel, driver, spoiler, etc., are not restricted as long as they meet with the rules and regulations as specified within this document The following items are prohibited: 1. Springs 2. Starting devices or propellants 3. Electronic or lighting devices that interfere with the race electronics. 4. Liquids, wet paint, oil, sticky substance, or powders of any kind (other than axle lubrication) 5. Glass or excessively fragile parts 6. Bearings and or bushings 7. Hubcaps covering the nail head 8. Loose/moving objects on or in the car Washers/body treatments to help reduce friction ARE ALLOWED. Washers may be between the body and the wheel, and the wheel and the axle head. Body treatments (between wood chassis and wheel) may be things like sprayed on graphite paint, Teflon tape, other slippery materials/waxes applied to the body. The cost of small washers is very low and the experience of working with them can be educational and fun. The washers may be glued to the car body. 3 WHEELS 3.1 Official BSA and aftermarket wheels are allowed. 3.2 All lettering and numbering, both inside and outside of the wheel, must remain complete and be visible with the wheel on the car. 3.3 The fluting, spokes and other markings on the outside wheel area must remain visible. Fluting refers to the small bumps on the outside edge of the tread. 3.4 The wheel diameter must be no less than 1.16 inches. 3.5 The tread surface width must be no less than 7.5 mm. 3.6 All cars must have four (4) wheels. All four wheels must be installed in the provided axle slots. Page 4 of 10
3.7 Hub modifications such as depicted below are allowed. 3.8 The following wheel modifications are prohibited: 1. Drilling holes in the tread, sidewalls, or spoke area. 2. Removing material from the sidewalls or Spoke 3. Filling wheel tread with any type of material 4. Filling the wheel bores and re-drilling the bore 3.9 Hubcaps/wheel covers are not allowed. Page 5 of 10
The rules permit many wheel modification so long as you observe the dimension limits and restrictions listed above. Common legal modifications include but are not limited to: Truing the tread surface with sandpaper, straight edge, or lathe to correct out of round wheels. Truing and shaping the inner edge of the thread surface Narrowing the tread surface to 7.5mm to get straight edges Applying wheel bore treatments such as polish and wax to smooth the bore. Tapping the wheel bore Truing and re-coning the tip of the inner hub Removing the double step from the outer hub Balancing the wheel by adding material such as glue or fingernail polish to the inside of the wheel Adding a transparent cover to the inside of the wheel to reduce air drag 4 AXLES 4.1 Aftermarket axles are allowed. Metal Axles with a nail head are required with an overall diameter of no less than.084 inches. 4.2 The axles provided may be altered. The axles may be polished and lubricated Axles are allowed to be bent Axles are allowed to be grooved. Page 6 of 10
4.3 The axle nails shall be firmly affixed to the wood of the car body and MUST be placed in the original 'axle grooves' in the supplied wooden block. 4.4 One-piece axles that extend through the width of the car to support both wheels are not allowed. 4.5 The wheel base (distance between the axles) must not be changed from the standard locations of the official car kit. You may use official BSA axles or after-market nail type axles from various vendors. 5 LUBRICATION 5.1 The wheels and axles may be lubricated with powdered WHITE TEFLON LUBE OR DRY POWDERED GRAPHITE. 5.2 No liquid lubricants will be allowed. Oils and silicone sprays may soften the plastic wheels and damage the track and, therefore, are specifically prohibited. 5.3 Lubrication will only be allowed prior to registration. Once inspection is completed, no additional lubrication will be allowed. 5.4 If wheel or axle repairs are necessary during the race, only the replacement part may be re-lubricated under the supervision of a race official. 5.5 Lubricants may not foul the track. Over application of lubricant, which results in excessive shedding onto the track is not allowed. 5.6 Coverings placed on the wheel rim to hold graphite or lubricant around the nail axle head are not permitted. 6 WEIGHTS You may also polish and groove the axle provided that the journal portion of the axle (the part the wheel rides on) is no less than.084 inches, roughly the same diameter as the original BSA nails. 6.1 Lead (Pb) weight, if used, must be completely sealed and safe from all possible contact with youth. Mercury, Uranium, Plutonium, or other dangerous materials shall not be used in adding weight to the car. Please avoid Lead (Pb) in cars this year! The 2008 Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act restricts the amount of lead that may be contained in children s toys (ages 12 and under). For a 5- ounce toy, the lead limit would be 3/1000 of an ounce! Therefore, we strongly encourage you to use other material for weight. Common alternatives include zinc, copper, and tungsten. Page 7 of 10
6.2 All weight must be securely fastened to the car, e.g. by permanent glue, nails or screws, but not by "sticky substances", e.g. tape, or tack spray. Heavy-duty double back tape such as that used by the ones sold by the BSA - Stick-On Weights (WW7603) will be allowed. 6.3 Weight may be added to the car and will be considered part of the car for purposes of all measurements. 6.4 The car may be drilled/hollowed out and weight securely added. 6.5 No liquid weights are permitted inside or attached to the outside of the car body. 6.6 Weights shall be passive, i.e. non-moveable, non-magnetic 6.7 Drilling/Removal of lead weight is not allowed at the race or check-in venue. 6.8 Interior wheel weights are allowed as long as they allow for inspection of the interior of the wheels. NOTE: The official scale will be available before the date of the event as well as during the registration process. HINT: If you are unable to check the weight of your car on the official scale prior to registration, then it would be a good idea to be slightly under weight on any other scale you are using. On race day, it is typically easier to add weight than it is to remove weight. 7 UNACCEPTABLE CONSTRUCTION 7.1 The following may NOT be used in conjunction with the wheels or axles: Hubcaps Inserts Sleeves Bearings 7.2 No loose material of any kind is permitted in or on the car. 8 GRAVITY POWERED 8.1 The car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices, springs or other methods of propulsion. 8.2 The car shall not run on any type of springs. 8.3 No external sources of power, magnets, engines, jets, compressed air or propulsion systems other than gravity may be used. 8.4 The race car may not be constructed or treated in such a way that the track's starting mechanism imparts momentum to the car. 8.5 Cars with sticky substances on the front of the car and protrusions which may catch on the starting pin shall be disqualified. Page 8 of 10
8.6 If the track's electronic finish line sensor's result is challenged by the Finish Line Judges, the race will be re-staged and re-run. 9 RACE DAY 9.1 Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before it may compete. The inspectors will disqualify any car not meeting these rules. Any adult or scout may appeal the findings of the Inspectors to the Race Committee Chairperson, whose decision is final. 9.2 Every effort will be made to do the inspection without any altering of the car. If we can t verify that the wheels have not been lightened due to interior wheel weights, air dams, fenders, or other reasons, we will ask YOU to take the wheels off for inspection. 9.3 After a car has passed inspection, only race officials may handle the car. 9.4 After check-in, adjustments are not allowed. Car repairs during the race are not allowed unless authorized by the race officials. 9.5 Once Inspection is PASSED before the race, the car will not be re-inspected after the race. 9.6 Good sportsmanship and behavior is expected. Race officials may ask anyone not following this rule to leave. Typically, race officials will authorize a car repair if it was involved in a collision with another car or object. However, the decision to allow a repair is left entirely to the discretion of the race officials. Depending on the race officials, they may offer to assist with the repairs if needed. 9.7 Car Leaves Lane If, during a race heat, a car leaves its lane but proceeds down the track in a manner that does not interfere with its opponent, then the race will be called normally If the car leaves its lane and interferes with another car, the racer will be given 2 minutes to inspect and/or repair car, re-qualify and the race will be re-staged and re-run If the same car leaves its lane again and interferes with another car, that car will be judged last place and disqualified from any future races. The race will be re-staged and re-run without that car. 9.8 Car Leaves Track Page 9 of 10
9.8.1 If, during a race heat, a car leaves the track without interfering with its opponents, the racer will be given 2 minutes to inspect and/or repair car, re-qualify and the race will be re-staged and re-run If the same car again leaves the track without interfering with its opponents, that car will be judged last place and the race will be called normally. 9.9 Car Repair (Without Fault) If, during the race, a wheel falls off or the car becomes otherwise damaged, then the RACER may, to the best of his ability perform repairs with the assistance of his adult partner The Racer shall be allowed 2 minutes to perform repairs and re-qualify for racing. This time may be extended upon the approval of the Race Official The car shall be re-qualified for racing in accordance with Rules within this document Car Repair (With Fault) If a car is damaged due to track fault, or damage caused by another car or person, then the Race Official, at his sole discretion, may allow additional repair assistance and time to the Racer The car shall be re-qualified for racing in accordance with Rules within this document No Finishers: If, during a race, no car reaches the finish line on the track, the car traveling the farthest in its lane shall be declared the race winner Race Area: Only members of the Race Committee and the Racers competing during such heat may enter the track area. 10 QUESTIONS Questions may be addressed to the Race Officials. The Tumbleweed 200 Race Officials may be contacted at info@tumbleweed200.org. Page 10 of 10
