13 About Dakota Ammunition The Dakota line of proprietary cartridges was developed by Don Allen to meet the demands of the serious worldgame hunter. Included are six cartridges based on the 404 Jeffrey case and a seventh (450 Dakota) based on the 416 Rigby case. Each Dakota cartridge is designed to produce maximum performance and accuracy while serving as a fitting companion to your Dakota rifle. The conventional, non-belted case offers several advantages: 1. Better bore alignment. A non-belted case head spaces on the center of the shoulder and physically centers the case in the chamber or bore. A case that head spaces on a belt has no means to align the cartridge with the bore. Even minimal head space will allow the cartridge to lie in the bottom of the chamber not in alignment. Firearms having a spring-loaded plunger as an ejector push the cartridge forward and physically center the cartridge in the chamber. 2. Improved feed and function. Any belted or rimmed cartridge or one with a rebated rim is more difficult than conventional design to make function and feed properly. Virtually all cartridges employed by our military forces have been of conventional design for obvious reasons. 3. Increased case capacity. Since the case does not require swaging down to create the belt there is more room inside for additional powder capacity in the same length. For example, the 330 Dakota, at a cartridge length of 2.54", holds 10 to 12 grains more powder than the belted 338 Win. Mag. at 2.50". 4. Uniform powder burn. A more consistent and uniform powder burn rate results from the shorter powder column of the Dakota cartridges. The 6mm PPC is a modern example of this type of cartridge. The more uniform burn rate generally equates to greater accuracy. 7MM Dakota. This cartridge may well be the ultimate 7mm load. Excellent accuracy, moderate recoil, very flat trajectory, and incredible downrange punch combine to allow the hunter to deliver lethal performance over extreme ranges. 300 Dakota. A strong contender for most versatile and best all-around cartridge In the world s most popular caliber. Easily exceeds the performance of the famous 300 H&H Magnum and suitable for standard-length actions. The combination of ideal powder capacity, a wide selection of bullets and exceptional accuracy makes this cartridge one of our most popular. 330 Dakota. The first of Don Allen s cartridges based on a shortened and improved 404 Jeffrey case makes an excellent all-around cartridge. The 330 Dakota combines the trajectory of a 7mm Remington Magnum with greater striking energy than a 375 H&H, but with 20 percent less recoil. 375 Dakota. Equal in all respects to the renowned 375 H&H Magnum, but suitable for use in standard-length actions. A well-balanced cartridge adequate for Africa s Big Five and any North American game. When loaded to the same or higher muzzle velocity than the 375 H&H, recoil is noticeably less. 404 Dakota. This cartridge uses the 404 buffet, actually.423 diameter. It is superior to the 416 Rigby in all respects; higher muzzle velocity and energy at lower pressure and recoil, with a more efficient reduced case capacity. This makes an ideal dangerous game cartridge suitable for standard-length actions. Also very popular in our take-down rifle when teamed with one of the smaller calibers as one of a two-barrel set for the international hunter. 450 Dakota. A very powerful cartridge suitable for the world s largest and most dangerous animals. Based on the 416 Rigby case, the 450 Dakota propels a 500-grain bullet at 2450 fps developing more than 6,000 ft. Ib. of muzzle energy about the same as the 600 Nitro Express.
