11 Schedule for the excercises Lab exercises are scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays o 9 days in lab / 10 weeks 1 lab day/week! Preliminary schedule has been published in MyCourses In case you cannot make it to the lab on scheduled date: o Remove your pair number and send the instructor. o Find a new slot for your exercise but other pairs cannot be deleted! Remember the module for three exercises (P1 P2 T1)! o Switch with another pair Both pairs must agree ( s of all students given below the scheduling table in MyCourses). 13 Pairs Which grade are you aiming for? Average student work load for average grade is working hours! Grades based mostly on reporting Choose someone who has similar aim for grade Compare also your calendars! The pair cannot be changed during the course! 13

14 Pair working: Tips and hints 1. Pair work means communication common understanding of performance and goals rules for working, e.g. ways of communication and time table 2. Report hours spent for reporting/student and who is responsible of what teachers need to be able to follow the work load at the course teachers don t have to give same grade to both member of the pair 3. If needed, report writing workshops will be organized to Tiia (tiia.viinikainen@aalto.fi) 4. If pairs need help in pair work, communication etc. an appointment can be booked form Pirjo (pirjo.pietikainen@aalto.fi) 14

15 Preparation for the exercise Study the theory Study the instructions Also the material safety data sheets (available in MyCourses) Each exercise starts with a questioning of related theory, procedures and safety issues! Careless preparation may be a reason for postponing the exercise Don t be late! Meeting point: Polymer Technology lobby D/E/F wing, 4th floor 15

16 Reporting Written of each exercise 4 full reports and 5 Minireports Reports turned in via MyCourses Equal contribution by both members in every report All reports are written in English Detailed instructions In MyCourses Report templates in MyCourses Return also the report with teacher s comments when you have done the corrections Each report can be revised only once! 16

17 Deadlines Start writing report immediately after the exercise Report has to be submitted in two weeks! If report is submitted late, maximum grade cannot be given! Submitted 2-3 days late, maximum grade 4 Submitted 4-5 days late, maximum grade 3 Submitted 6-7 days late, maximum grade 2 Etc. Feedback is given in one week, revisions are due in one week. If 3 (or more) reports are pending, the course could be failed! All reports must be accepted by Jan 6 th

18 Assessment criteria Course grade = mean value of exercise grades Exercises graded 1-5 preparation for the lab working in the lab report and its corrections Each exercise must be passed The first report is assessed gently 18

19 How to affect grading? Assessment of the report Readability, how the guidelines are followed Presentation of the results Clearness of figures and tables Requested corrections are to be made! If the first returned version has major flaws the grade 5 can not be reached All questions not answered Some relevant part is missing Grade 5 is possible even if minor revisions are required (if they are made appropriately) 19
