3 1 Contents Safety suggestions Controls and instruments... 2, 3 Operatiort Fuels and lubricants... 50, 51 Lubrication and periodic service Service Trouble shooting Storage Attachments Specifications Index Safety Suggestions A Safety of the operator was one of the prime.. considerations in the minds of John Deere engineers when this combine was designed. Shielding, simple adjustments, and other safety features were built into the combine wherever possible. All machinery must be operated only by responsible persons who have been properly instructed and delegated to do so. Riders must not be allowed on the operator's platform when combine is in operation. Shields and guards must be in place and in good condition before starting in the field. A CAUTION: Failure to follow proper proce.. dures when mounting a tire on a wheel or rim can produce an explosion which may result in serious bodily injury. DO NOT attempt to mount a tire unless you have the proper equipment and experience to perform the job safely. Have it done by your John Deere dealer or a qualified tire repair service. Detailed tire mounting instructions, including necessary safety precautions, are contained in John Deere Fundamentals of Service (FOS) Manual 55, Tires and Tracks, which is available from your John Deere dealer. Escaping fluid under pressure can have sufficient force to penetrate the skin, causing serious personal injury. Before disconnecting lines relieve all pressure. Before applying pressure to system, all connections must be tight and lines, pipes and hoses must not be damaged. Fluid escaping from a very small hole can be almost invisible. Use a piece of cardboard or wood, rather than hands, to search for suspected leaks. Clothing worn by combine operator must be fairly tight and belted. Loose jackets, shirts, or sleeves should never be worn because of the danger of getting into moving parts. Everyone must be clear of the combine before starting so they cannot be struck by moving parts or caught in a drive belt or chain. Never clean, lubricate, or adjust the combine when it is running. Be careful when operating on hillsides because combine may tip sideways if it strikes a hole, ditch, or other irregularity. Never attempt to clear obstructions off the header unless the combine is stopped and the engine shut off. Keep the operator's platform clean. Do not use it as a place to carry loose tools, lunch boxes, etc. Maintain a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location and be familiar with its' correct use. Before leaving combine unattended, lower the header to the ground or support it with either the hydraulic cylinder safety stop or with blocks.
4 Operation 7 COLD WEATHER OPERATION Fuel System Use winter-grade fuel. Fill the fuel tank at the end of the day's run to prevent condensation. Cooling System Drain, flush, and fill cooling system with a recognized brand of radiator sealer and antifreeze solution. Use permanent-type (ethylene glycol) antifreeze solution containing rust inhibitors and without stop-leak additive. This type of antifreeze is resistant to evaporation when heated. Quarts (litre) of Ethylene Glycol Required at Lowest Expected Temperature + 20 F (-7 C) 6 (5.68 I) +10 F (-12 C) 9 (8.52 I) OaF (-18 C) 12 (11.36 I) -10 F (-23 C) 14 (13.25 I) -20 F (-29 C) 16 (15.14 I) -34 F (-37 C) 18-1/2 (17.51 I) Time required to sufficiently heat the coolant depends on how cold it is. Five hours may be required at temperatures above O F (-18 C). Lower temperatures may require up to 8 hours. A CAUTION: To avoid shock or hazardous.. operation, always use a three wire heavyduty electrical cord equipped with 3-wire connectors. If a 2- to 3-contact adapter is used at the wall receptacle, always connect the green wire to a good ground. Cold Weather Starting Aid Diesel engines are equipped with an ether starting fluid aid which injects atomized ether fluid into the engine air intake system. Normally, ether is used for starting at temperatures below 40 F. (4 C). After filling, check system for leaks. Batteries When the temperature drops below freezing, keep batteries fully charged. A badly discharged battery freezes more quickly than one that is well charged. In freezing weather, do not add water to the batteries unless engine is going to be run. Water will freeze as it will not mix with the electrolyte until the alternator passes a charging current through the batteries. IMPORTANT: If booster batteries are required, see instructions on page 135. In-Block Coolant Heater Coolant Heater The optional coolant heater has a 1000-watt, 115- volt heating element. It mounts in the frost plug opening in the left-hand side of the engine block. By warming the engine, the heater reduces oil drag, eases starting, and shortens warm-up time. A-Screw B-Tray C-Solenoid To use the starting fluid aid, remove safety cap and plastic spray button from can. Loosen screw "A" and place can in tray "B". Position can directly under electric solenoid "C". Tighten screw by hand until nozzle of can is securely seated in the solenoid. IMPORTANT: To avoid damage, turn engine with starter one or two revolutions before injecting starting fluid. Inject starting fluid only while the engine is turning. To inject starting fluid, press starting aid button (yellow) located on instrument panel. Stop injecting fluid after the engine starts. If the engine begins to die during the first few minutes of operation, inject another "shot" of fluid. IMPORTANT: Fluid can must be left in tray, even if empty, to prevent dirt from being drawn into the engine. A CAUTION: Ether starting fluid is highly.. flammable. Store starting fluid cans where they will not be subject to extreme cold or warm temperatures. For best results, store fluid at room temperature.
5 Operation 29 Concave (Spike-Tooth) The combine is shipped from the factory with two grate concaves and one tooth concave installed to the front. An additional tooth concave (purchased from your John Deere Dealer) can be used only if raising the concaves and speeding up the cylinder have failed to achieve thorough threshing. Usually one tooth concave set fairly high is better than two tooth concaves set low. The use of two tooth con caves requires increased power, is likely to crack grain, and will reduce the amount of grate area available for separation. This could overload the straw walkers. The tooth concaves are installed to the front with the grate concaves to the rear. There should be equal spacing between the cylinder and concave teeth on each side with the concave in high position and the teeth straight and properly adjusted (page 95). If concave teeth are set closer to the cylinder teeth on one side of the front row, than on the opposite side in the second row, the opening will be too large on one side, thus permitting grain heads to pass through unthreshed. The opening on the other side will be too small, resulting in grain being cracked and straw being broken up too much. Level concave (page 96). The spike-tooth concave is designed so the rear spacing increases or decreases proportionally with the front spacing. Adjust the front of the concave with the concave opening control wheel located on the console. See illustration below. Stone Traps Illustrated on 7700 Combine Two stone traps protect the cylinder and concave from damage. The front stone trap will pivot down to dump stones. The rear stone trap is attached to the concave and moves with it. A CAUTION: Always lower the hydraulic cylinder safety stop when working under the header or feeder house. Raise header to maximum height and lower hydraulic cylinder safety stop. Pull lever forward, allowing stone trap to pivot down and dump. NOTE: On 7700 Combines, pull either or both levers forward to dump stone trap. To close stone trap, push handle rearward, locking stone trap in place. A stone trap cover is available as an attachment for the stone trap that is attached to the concave. This cover is for use only in crop conditions where feeding is retarded across the full width stone trap. Check the stone traps frequently and remove any stones that have accumulated. A-Timed Sector B-Calibration The timed sector (A) located on the worm gear to the right of the cylinder is calibrated (8) to use as a guide to return to the concave spacing that was previously found best for a particular crop or field condition.
6 136 Service ALTERNATOR AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR The alternator is located at the right-hand front of the engine and provides electrical current for charging the batteries and for all the other electrical requirements of the combine. The solid-state regulator controls the voltage output of the alternator. Alternator Connections GREEN BRUSHHOLDER) MOTOROLA AL TERNATOR H29208 If for any reason the alternator wires are disconnected, connect them as shown in the illustration. Check wiring before connecting batteries as follows: With ignition and light switches "OFF", and positive (+) terminals of batteries connected, MOMENTARILY TAP the negative battery strap to negative battery terminal. No arcing should occur. If arcing occurs, DO NOT MAKE CONNECTION. Recheck entire wiring system connections, make corrections, and repeat the same test. 4. The alternator output terminal must never be grounded under any circumstances. 5. Never, under any circumstances, disconnect or connect any alternator wires with batteries connected or with alternator operating. The high voltage resulting from open circuit operation will result in damage to the alternator, regulator, or electrical system. 6. Always connect combine batteries or booster battery in the correct polarity. This is a NEGATIVEgrounded electrical system. A battery charger, if so designed, may be used as a booster to start the combine. A CAUTION: Disconnect both cables from.. battery terminals when charging batteries in combine. NOTE: Keep alternator screen in place and clear any trash or dirt build up from it. One of the major causes of apparent alternator failure is dirt clogging the alternator. When this happens, the alternator gets hot and quits operating. Cleaning this dirt out with compressed air or water will, in many cases, reactivate the alternator. Precaution1; for Alternator and Voltage Regulator Disconnect the ground strap from the batteries when working on or near the alternator or regulator. This will prevent damage that might occur if the terminals are accidentally shorted. When the batteries are connected, observe the following precautions. Failure to observe them will probably result in damage to the alternator, regulator, or both. 1. NEVER ATTEMPT TO POLARIZE THE ALTER NATOR OR REGULATOR. Never ground a terminal or connect a jumper wire to any alternator terminals. 2. If the alternator wiring is disconnected, be certain that it is properly connected BEFORE the batteries are connected (see illustration left-hand column). 3. The alternator field terminal or the field circuit between the alternator and the regulator must never be grounded under any circumstances. Check alternator belt tension every 100 hours of operation. With the alternator bracket and adjusting cap screw loose, force the alternator away from the engine until the belt has 3/4-inch (19 mm) flex with 25 pounds (111 N) pull at center on one side of the belt. IMPORT ANT: Do not pry on the rear half of the alternator housing as this may damage the assembly.
