3 Question 2 Marks Reference Marking notes (a) Any FOUR of: Ensure the instrument is suitable for the task. Ensure instrument, clips, leads and probes are in good condition. Ensure the amps function is selected when measuring current. Ensure the range selected can measure at least 10 A. Ensure the volts function is selected when measuring voltage. Ensure the range selected can measure at least 230 V. Ensure leads are correctly connected. (4 marks) (b) It was ineffective because no test was carried out between phase and earth or between phase and neutral. (c) Prove the meter is operating correctly on a known live circuit. Test that the circuit is isolated. Prove again that the meter is still operating correctly on a known live circuit. (d) Any ONE of: Lock open the isolating switch. Lock open the MCB. Disconnect the final subcircuit cable at the switchboard. Disconnect the cable supplying the electrical appliance at the isolator. Use an access permit or hold card system. FINAL- EST 2075 ANSWERS 25 NOVEMBER
4 Question 3 Marks Reference Marking notes (a) (i) (ii) The maximum current that the fuse is designed to carry continuously. The maximum voltage the fuse is designed to withstand without insulation breakdown (iii) It is the maximum prospective short circuit current the fuse can safely interrupt. (b) As current through a protective device increases. The time taken to operate decreases. (c) The HRC fuses operate much faster than the thermal overload under short circuit conditions. (d) Any TWO of: It prevents the fuse wire from bulging out the side of the carrier and being accessible to touch. Under overload conditions the heat produced by the fuse wire is confined to the tunnel area. Under short-circuit conditions the arc from the molten fuse wire is confined within the fuse carrier and base. FINAL- EST 2075 ANSWERS 25 NOVEMBER
5 Question 4 Marks Reference Marking notes (a) The description must to show: Opening the isolator. (½ mark) Using a volt meter to test for isolation at the load side of the isolator Using the prove-test-prove method. Locking the isolator open. Attaching a danger tag to the (½ mark) isolator. Isolation can be carried out at the switchboard, but testing must occur at the isolator. (b) Test between a pair of phase conductors in turn. Each pair of conductors connected to the windings will have the same resistance. (c) Insulation resistance tester (½ mark) 500 V d.c. (½ mark) Test between each winding and the frame of the motor. Test between each of the windings A test result of 1 MΩ or more FINAL- EST 2075 ANSWERS 25 NOVEMBER
