1 Technical Information John Deere Brake Repair Kit VPJ7387 & VPJ Tractors The Vapormatic Co. Important: Please submerge friction disk into a container of clean transmission oil VLL1083 for a period of at least four hours to allow for expansion. Failure to do so could cause premature damage to the brake discs.
2 Removing rear brakes: Drain rear axle/transmission oil from all drain plugs. Remove rear axle strainer if equipped. Remove final drive housing. Remove pressure plate and final drive shaft. Remove brake plate. Brake piston removal procedure: Locate brake pipe and disconnect at convenient point. Connect to this brake line a hand operated hydraulic pump, slowly pump brake piston out of housing. Note: Only pump oil towards brake piston and not in the direction of brake valve. Remove the three brake piston retractors and discard. Retractors Piston O-rings Piston Friction disc Pressure plate Brake installation preparation: Thoroughly clean rear housing of old oil and any debris. Flush through brake lines with clean transmission oil. Clean off old gasket sealant from mating surfaces.
3 Brake piston installation: Apply a light coat of stud lock to retraction pin threads and install to a torque of 15Nm (11Ibs/ft) Install piston O-rings and lightly coat with oil. Apply grease to the retraction pins to aid piston installation. Place piston into position and carefully drive piston home using a soft hammer. Do not damage piston surface in this procedure. Note: Take care to drive piston fully into position. If piston is not fully retracted, brakes could bind when tightening final drive housing. Brake piston retraction and leak test: Tractors with trailer brakes: Disconnect the pressure line at the trailer brake valve and seal with a blanking off plug. Pump the brake line to a pressure of 3 Bar (44 psi). Measure pressure drop over 10 seconds. This must not exceed 0.1 Bar (1.5 psi) Release pressure from brake line and measure piston return travel. This should be done in three intervals, approx 120º apart. Brake piston return movement should be at least 0.20mm (0.008in) within 15 seconds. Total retraction of piston must not exceed 0.35mm (0.014in).
4 Re-assemble of brake plates: Insert pre-oiled brake plate as described earlier. Insert final drive shaft. Note: The longest final drive shaft has to be installed on the right hand side of the tractor. Install brake pressure plate. Note: Install pressure plate with internal oil drilling towards the top. Internal oil hole. Installing final drive housing: Install final drive housing, using an anaerobic gasket maker such as VLB4058 Torque final drive housing bolts to: up to serial number Nm (170Ibs/ft) from serial number Nm (190Ibs/ft) up to serial number Nm (170Ibs/ft) from serial number Nm (190Ibs/ft) Whilst tightening final drive housing bolts, rotate final drive shaft to check for free rotation. Reconnect brake pipes and trailer brake valve pipe. Note: New oil and filters must be used when replacing Vapormatic brake kits.
5 Bleeding the brakes: Note: Care must be taken to ensure the oil is not aerated in any way. If necessary, leave the tractor for one hour to allow the oil to settle. Bleeding the brake valve: From inside the cab remove the right hand side panel to gain access to the brake valve. Slide transparent bleed tube over bleed valve. Place other end of pipe into a suitable container. Run engine. Open bleed screw on brake valve. Slowly turn steering wheel from lock-to-lock. Note: To avoid aerating the oil, turn the steering wheel slowly and evenly. Depress the right hand brake pedal and keep it depressed. Slowly depress the left hand brake pedal and slowly release it. Wait for three seconds and repeat this process until the oil exiting the bleed valve is free from air. Tighten the bleed screw with the pedal depressed. Repeat this procedure for the right hand brake pedal with the left hand pedal depressed. Bleed screw Bleed rear brakes.
6 Bleeding rear brakes: First locate the bleed screws found just behind the rockshaft on both sides, (For tractors after Serial number the right hand bleed screw are located on the trailer brake valve). Place transparent tubes over the bleed screws and into the oil filler neck. Note: When using this procedure turn steering wheel from lock to lock slowly. This is to avoid aerating the oil. Slacken of the left hand bleed screw and run engine. Whilst turning the steering wheel from lock to lock, slowly depress the left hand brake pedal and slowly release it. Repeat this procedure until the oil exiting the bleed screw is free from any air bubbles. Tighten bleed screw with the pedal depressed. Pump left hand brake pedal until it becomes solid. Keep pressure on this pedal and slacken off the left hand bleed screw. Depress pedal until fully down, then with the brake pedal still held down tighten bleed screw. Repeat this procedure at least five times. For tractors up to Serial number repeat this procedure for the right hand bleed screw. For tractors after Serial number repeat the above procedure using the trailer brake valve. Re-bleed brake valve again. Note: Once the bleeding procedure is complete, individually depress each brake pedal sharply to make sure that both pistons are in their home position. Test drive tractor and if necessary re-bleed tractor brakes as described earlier.
