The wiper control unit determines the parking position and the delay time interval. Battery voltage is applied to the wiper motor when the ignition switch is in RUN or START. The wiper motor has two brushes for low and high speed operation. When the wiper switch is in the LO or HI positions, one of the two brushes is connected to G12 through the wiper switch. When the wiper switch is turned off, the low speed brushes are grounded through the mist switch, wiper switch and wiper control unit (BLU wire). The wiper motor continues to run until the automatic stop slip ring reaches the position shown in the schematic, which occurs at the parking position. Battery voltage is applied to the wiper control unit through the BLU/WHT wire. This signals the wiper control unit to remove ground from the wiper motor and stop the wiper in the park position. In the intermittent mode, ground is applied by the wiper control unit through the same BLU/WHT wire. The wipers run until the automatic stop slip ring makes one rotation. One rotation of the automatic stop slip ring coincides with one complete sweep of the wiper blades. The pause interval between sweeps is generated by circuits in the wiper control unit. The length of the interval can be varied by the intermittent delay time controller. When the mist switch is operated, the high speed brush of the wiper motor is grounded and voltage is sent to the wiper control unit to initiate mist operation. After the mist switch is released, the wipers continue to complete one full sweep of the wiper blades at low speed and then go to park position. When the winter position switch is activated, the wiper arms rise to the winter position as soon as the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START. By allowing the wiper arms to be parked higher up on the glass, snow or ice on the car can be cleared by the driver before the wipers are operated.

2 When the winter position switch is returned to the ON position, the wiper arms make one sweep and then retract to the normal park position as soon as the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START. The windshield washer is controlled directly by the washer switch. Whenever the washer switch is operated, a voltage is sent to the wiper control unit to start the wipers if they are not already running. After the washer switch is released, the wipers continue to operate for about 3 seconds and then park, unless the wiper switch is on. System Operation Table Begin the system operation with the ignition switch in RUN and the winter position switch in the ON (summer) position. Action Operate washer switch for one or two seconds. Turn wiper switch to INT. Normal Operation Washer sprays the windshield as long as washer switch is held on. Wipers begin operating as soon as the washer switch is operated. Wipers continue to run for about 3 seconds after the washer switch is released, then return to park. Wipers make one complete stroke then pause before making the next stroke. The pause interval may be varied from 2 to 10 seconds by adjusting the delay time control ring on the wiper switch. Action Activate the winter position switch using the tip of the ignition key. Turn wiper switch to LO, Turn wiper switch to OFF. Set winter position switch to ON (summer). Turn wiper switch to HI. Turn wiper switch to OFF. Operate mist switch. Normal Operation Wipers rise to winter park position and remain there. Wipers run continuously at low speed. Wipers park at elevated (winter) park position. Wipers make one sweep and then park at normal (depressed) position. Wipers run continuously at fast speed. Wipers return to park position. Wipers make one complete stroke and then return to the park position. Turn wiper switch to OFF. Wipers return to park position.

3 Quick Checks Troubleshooting 1. Check fuse 6 by operating the sunroof (optional). 2. Check ground G12 by operating the cigarette lighter (optional). 3. If washer does not operate, check that (critical): the washer reservoir is filled, hoses are not pinched or kinked, hoses are correctly attached, nozzles are not clogged. Symptom Wipers do not operate in any position. Wipers do not operate in high or low speed. Wipers do not operate in intermittent mode. Wipers do not operate in mist mode. Blades do not return to park position when wiper switch is turned off. Blades do not return to normal (recessed) position when winter position switch is ON. Little or no washer fluid is pumped.
