1 FANs 268.1, 977, Installation Bulletin EPP-1000 Issue Date 0800 EPP-1000 Series Electro-Pneumatic Positioners A pplication The EPP-1000 is designed for applications where electronic control of pneumatic actuators is desired, particularly when there is a need for accurate or precise actuator positioning. Typical applications include control of damper actuators, inlet guide vanes and valve actuators on air handling units, large commercial unitary equipment (such as rooftops), mixing plenums, and chilled water systems. Models with a feedback potentiometer may be used to provide information for use in monitoring or documenting damper positions. Additionally, multiple EPP-1000s may be sequenced off a single control signal through the use of staggered offset and span settings. The EPP-1000 can also be used in electronic retrofits of pneumatic systems. The EPP-1000 mounts directly to the controlled device (actuator) through a quick-release mounting band. This provides the flexibility to adapt to differently shaped actuator housings (Figure 1). 9 EPP-1000 with the Additional Feedback Potentiometer (EPP , 22, and 23) Follow these wiring procedures for the EPP , 22, and 23 models: 1. Make sure the three white striped wires are field connected to the wires from the external monitor through the conduit hole at the top of the EPP Note: The white/violet wire is the retracted end, the white/orange is the wiper, and the white/brown is the stroked end. 2. Connect the three wires to the appropriate terminals of the external device. C alibration EPP-1000 Electro-Pneumatic Positioner Calibration of the EPP-1000 is a two part process. The feedback cable is calibrated first, and the potentiometer positions are set afterwards. The EPP-1000 has four adjustment potentiometers, which correspond to the following actuator positions in direct acting applications as shown in Figure 20. Actuator s Stroke Note: 100% 0% Offset Span Home Input Stroke Figure 20: Potentiometer Settings for DA Applications Figure 20 is similar for reverse acting applications, except the stroke occurs at an input below offset rather than at an input above offset. Home: The percentage of stroke above the actuator s minimum position, which defines the minimum point at which the EPP-1000 will begin to stroke the actuator. Stroke: The EPP-1000 s full stroke range. Offset: Span: The minimum input signal value before the EPP-1000 will begin to stroke the actuator. The input signal range over which the EPP-1000 will stroke the actuator. Feedback Cable (Dampers and Valves) To calibrate the feedback cable: 1. Apply 24 VAC power to the AC and COM terminals. Note: Do not connect the pneumatic supply and the controller s input signal at this point. 2. Put the DA/RA jumper in the DA position. 3. Put the input signal jumper in the VDC position. 4. Set the four potentiometers to the following factory-calibrated settings: Note: If the factory-calibrated settings for offset and span are acceptable, do not change the settings of the offset and span potentiometers. Stroke: Fully CCW Home: Mid position Offset: Mid position (Do not change if using the 1 volt factory setting.) Span: Fully CCW (Do not change if using the 8 volt factory setting.) 5. Pull the feedback cable out of the EPP-1000 until the cable stops, and hold it taut. 6. Let the feedback cable back into the EPP-1000, and stop at the point when one Light-Emitting Diode (LED) is on and the other is off. 7. Keeping the feedback cable taut, clamp the cable with the cable clamping block by tightening the two No screws. 8. Connect the input signal to the IN terminal. 9. To set the Stroke and Home, refer to Setting the Stroke and Home 10. To set the offset and span, refer to the Setting the Offset and Span EPP-1000 Series Electro-Pneumatic Positioners Installation Bulletin 9

10 Setting the Stroke and Home If the factory-calibrated settings (1 volt offset, 8 volt span) are appropriate for the application, skip this The stroke position should be adjusted for each application. Make sure the power to the EPP-1000 is off. To set the stroke, proceed as follows: 1. Turn the stroke potentiometer fully CW. 2. Connect a small jumper wire between the 15V and IN terminals. 3. Apply power and air to the EPP The actuator shaft will extend, and both LEDs will be lit. 4. Wait until the actuator shaft is fully extended, and slowly turn the stroke potentiometer until one LED is off, and the actuator is at the desired full stroke position. Note: Turning the stroke potentiometer CCW retracts the actuator shaft. 5. Remove the jumper wire from the 15V and IN terminals. The actuator shaft will retract. 6. At this point, one LED is on, and one off. If this is not the case, adjust the home potentiometer until one LED is on, one LED is off, and the actuator is at the desired home position. 7. If the factory settings for offset and span are appropriate (1 volt offset, 8 volt span), then calibration is complete. Setting the Offset and Span Determine the input signal and select the appropriate jumper using Table 1. Table 1: Input Jumper Signal Selections Input Signals Input Terminal Selections Input Signal Jumpers Proceed as follows to set the offset and span: 1. Wire from the controller through the conduit hole on the EPP-1000 housing to the appropriate terminals. 2. Select the DA or RA jumper position. 3. Set the potentiometers to the following positions: Offset: Fully CW Span: Mid position 4. Apply the input signal corresponding to the actuator s fully retracted position. Note: The P1-P5 jumper allows calibration without an input from a controller. For normal operation, the P1-P5 jumper must be in the A position. When the input signal jumper is in the VDC position, putting the P1-P5 jumper in the B position supplies 1 VDC to the input. Putting the P1-P5 jumper in the C position supplies 9 VDC to the input, regardless of the input signal that is being applied to the input terminal. 5. Adjust the offset potentiometer until the actuator shaft just begins to move. Note: Repeat Step 5 until the smallest movement possible is achieved. 6. Apply the input signal or jumper position corresponding to the full-stroke position, and the actuator shaft will extend. 7. Turn the span potentiometer fully CCW. 8. Adjust the span potentiometer until the actuator shaft just begins to retract. 9. Repeat Step 8 until the smallest movement possible is achieved. The EPP-1000 is now calibrated. Check that the P1-P5 jumper is back in the A position.
