SPN 3232 or 3271 Suspect Parameter Number (SPN) and Failure Mode Indicator (FMI) Description SPN FMI Description Possible Causes EGO Bank A Post Cat Heater Malfunctioning heater relay. Circuit Open/Shorted Open or short to ground on the EGO heater voltage supply Short to voltage on EGO Bank A post-cat heater control EGO Bank B Post Cat Heater Circuit Open/Shorted Malfunctioning heater relay. Open or short to ground on the EGO heater voltage supply Short to voltage on EGO Bank B post-cat heater control Circuit Description Battery voltage is supplied to each of the exhaust gas oxygen (EGO) sensors through the EGO heater relay when the ignition is ON. Each EGO heater has a dedicated control circuit, controlled by the ECM. The ECM monitors the status of each control circuit to determine the operating state. Conditions to Run SPN The SPN runs continuously when the ignition is ON.
Conditions to Set SPN SPN EGO Bank A Post-Cat Heater Open or Shorted The ECM detects that the commanded state of the heater control circuit driver does not match the state of the heater control circuit for greater than 240 ms. SPN EGO Bank B Post-Cat Heater Open or Shorted The ECM detects that the commanded state of the heater control circuit driver does not match the state of the heater control circuit for greater than 240 ms. Action Taken When SPN Sets SPN EGO Bank A Post-Cat Heater Open or Shorted The ECM will turn ON the malfunction indicator light (MIL) 3232 is a Type B SPN SPN EGO Bank B Post-Cat Heater Open or Shorted The ECM will turn ON the malfunction indicator light (MIL) 3271 is a Type B SPN Diagnostic Reference Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach. Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category. Perform the Diagnostic System Check prior to using this diagnostic. Test for intermittent or poor connections. Review Schematics and Connector End Views to locate test points. Review the SPN Type, Indicator Lamp Definitions, and Conditions to Clear the SPN/Indicator Lamp.
Diagnostic Tips Test for intermittent or poor connections. If SPN 3222, 3232, 3261, and 3271 are all present, test the heater relay for proper operation. If both 3232 and 3271 are present test the voltage supply circuit for a short to ground. Verify the fuse is good. Required Tools Terminal Test Probe Kit Fused Jumper Digital Multi-meter High Impedance Test Lamp Electronic Service Tool Circuit Diagnostics WARNING! To prevent bodily injury or death, stay away from hot engine surfaces and rotating engine components. 1. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the post-cat EGO sensor heater fuse voltage supply circuit and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, refer to the EGO heater relay testing in this diagnostic. If the test lamp illuminates, go to step 2 2. Ignition OFF, disconnect the appropriate post-cat EGO sensor, ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the heater voltage supply circuit terminal C and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate and the fuse is good, repair the open/high resistance in the
If the test lamp does not illuminate and the fuse is open, repair the short to ground in the If the test lamp illuminates, go to step 3 3. Connect a test lamp between B+ and the appropriate post-cat EGO heater control circuit terminal D, verify the test lamp does not illuminate. If the test lamp illuminates, disconnect the ECM connector J1-B, verify the test lamp does not illuminate. If the test lamp illuminates, repair the short to ground in the If the test lamp does not illuminate, replace the ECM. If the test lamp does not illuminate, go to step 4 4. Ignition ON, verify the test lamp illuminates. If the test lamp does not illuminate, ignition OFF, disconnect the ECM connector J1-B, test for less than 5 Ω between EGO heater control circuit terminal E and the appropriate ECM terminal listed below: Bank A post-cat heater control circuit terminal M1 Bank B post-cat heater control circuit terminal M2 If 5 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the If less than 5 Ω, ignition ON, test for less than 1 V between the EGO heater control circuit and ground. a) If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage in the b) If less than 1 V, replace the ECM. If the test lamp illuminates, replace the appropriate EGO sensor.
EGO Heater Relay Testing 1. Ignition OFF, remove the EGO sensor heater relay, verify a test lamp illuminates between the relay switch side B+ circuit terminal 30 and ground. If the test lamp illuminates, go to step 2 2. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the relay coil side ignition voltage circuit terminal 85 and ground. If the test lamp illuminates, go to step 3 3. Verify a test lamp illuminates between the EGO heater relay switch side B+ circuit terminal 30 and the relay coil side ground circuit terminal 86. ground If the test lamp illuminates, go to step 4 4. Test for less than 5 Ω between the EGO heater relay switch side voltage circuit terminal 87 and the post-cat EGO fuse. If 5 Ω or greater, replace the power distribution module. If less than 5 Ω, replace the EGO heater relay.
