6 Introduction 6 Product Definition The Massey Ferguson 3600 Series is a range of specialist tractors suited to a variety of tasks and working environments. Built in Europe, they are designed to cater for the specialist and multi-application markets for powerful, compact and manoeuvrable tractors for viticulture, horticultural and municipal uses. With a range of tractor widths and high standard specification, the Massey Ferguson 3600 Series has broad customer appeal. These tractors are unique in the market and will further strengthen Massey Ferguson s presence in the multi-application and specialist segments of an industry where there is a long tradition for the Massey Ferguson brand. With their modern styling, spacious cab and outstanding performance characteristics the MF 3600 Series complement the existing Massey Ferguson family of tractors from 12kw to 230kw.

7 Introduction 7 Rovigo Factory The Agritalia factory is located at Rovigo in the North of Italy. All MF 3600 models and versions are built in this factory. A workforce of 250 produces 15 tractors a day. There are two quality audits, one done by Agritalia and the other by AGCO. Each tractor is carefully checked using a 200 point checklist. For over 50 years, Massey Ferguson has been the world s dominant tractor brand of farm machinery in more than 140 countries around the globe.

12 Introduction 12 Product Positioning continued Vineyard Version (V) MF 3600 V The V or Vineyard tractors provide a minimum nominal tractor width of only 1000mm for customers who are growing vines in traditional long established vineyards where the rows of vines are grown at row centres between 1.8m and 2.2m The MF 3600 V work efficiently in these applications. Wherever there is a need for a powerful, high specification tractor with a very narrow width this tractor will be at home. For example working in pedestrian areas or other municipal applications mm High level of performance thanks to the new common rail engine and the new transmission available. 14 Introduction 14 Product Positioning continued MF 3600 F The F or Flex tractor is again a compact and powerful work horse with a minimum nominal width of 1450mm allowing it to easily access crops with a row spacing of 2.5m to 3m. Fruit Version (F) However, it is much more than purely a wide fruit tractor, its specification and performance allow it to blur the distinction between the specialist and multi-application sectors The F tractor is just at home spraying fruit trees as cutting grass for ensiling or top cultivation work. The RC120 cab it shares with the MF 3600 S makes it one of the most spacious tractors in this sector providing levels of comfort and visibility previously only available on much larger tractors. This larger cab also enhances access to the tractor, important when it is necessary to mount and dismount frequently. The 3640 and 3660 are available as F versions.

17 Engine Common Rail Injection 17 AGCO POWER 33 CTA Working closely with AGCO POWER, Massey Ferguson engineers have worked hard to refine the efficiency of common rail diesel engine technology to meet the specific needs of these purpose-built tractors. By calculating precisely the amount of fuel required by the engine at any given moment, the system ensures optimum combustion in the cylinders. Giving you a cleaner, more powerful and reliable engine. Highly efficient, requiring less diesel and minimising exhaust emissions, the new 3 cylinder common rail engine is now the first choice for more and more farmers around the world. The three-cylinder common rail engines specified on the MF 3640 and 3660 models are extremely compact in design, allowing the fuel tank capacity to be maximised for prolonged working hours. In addition, the minimal size and careful packaging greatly enhance the machine s manoeuvrability and usefulness in confined spaces.

18 Engine Common Rail Injection 18 Common Rail - How the system works Key common rail components include the supply pump (1), a common rail (2), an injector (3), sensors to monitor the operating conditions of the engine and an electronic control unit (ECU) (4) to manage the whole system. The system injects fuel to the engine at much higher pressures than conventional fuel injection systems. High-pressure fuel from the supply pump is distributed to an injector mounted on each cylinder by means of the common rail, with fuel injection quantity and timing determined by controlling the injectors. Compared with conventional injection system characteristics, a common rail system has the following features : Injected fuel quantity and injection pressure are independent of each other, and are definable for each and every engine operating condition, allowing optimum air/fuel mix formation. At the beginning of the injection process (during the ignition lag between the start of injection and the start of combustion), injected fuel quantities are very low. A higher response rate : where a mechanical engine takes between rpm to react, Common Rail engines only take 10 rpm to respond.

23 Engine 23 Exhaust Pipe V, S and F Versions have the down swept horizontal exhaust with an externally mounted silencer on the right hand side of the engine with the outlet on the left hand side or right hand side (depending on specification) to keep any exhaust fumes away from the crop. It has been specially moulded to fit into the shape of the front support casting whilst maintaining optimum air flow for engine cooling. 24 Engine 24 Maintenance MF 3600 V, S and F Engine access for maintenance is via a single piece lift up bonnet supported by a gas filled strut. The bonnet retaining latch is operated by a cable on the left hand side of the front axle support casting. Major service points are mounted on the cool side (left hand side) of the engine. Disposable spin on type oil filter. Disposable canister type fuel filters with sedimentor. Dual element dry air filter mounted in front of the radiator. A removable dust screen it fitted to the radiator to aid cleaning.

28 Transmission 28 Introduction The Transaxle fitted in the Massey Ferguson 3600 Series is a rugged and robust unit designed and developed to provide a fully integrated assembly. The drive line uses a simple two shaft design for minimum power loss and each shaft is fitted with heavy duty bearings and an intermediate support in the housing for enhanced reliability and longevity. Helical cut gears provide smooth power delivery and quiet running. The assembly consists of front gearbox / clutch housing bolted to the rear axle centre housing providing structural rigidity for the complete tractor. The clutch / damper plate for the PowerShuttle transmission is housed in the front of the assembly providing a protected location. A range of gearbox options are available based around a twelve speed mechanical shuttle configuration with 24 speed, 40km/h achieved with the addition of an electro-hydraulic Speedshift. PowerShuttle is standard with the twenty four speed gearbox with the option to down-spec to a standard Speedshift 24 speed tranmission. The shuttle unit, Speedshift unit and the main twelve speed mechanical gearbox are contained in the centre section of the transaxle assembly. The rear section of the assembly carries the differential unit with its mechanical lock, the 4WD drop box and the PTO speed selector gears. The oil immersed disc brakes and inboard epicyclic reduction units are contained in the rear axle trumpet housings. The independent hydraulic PTO clutch assembly is mounted externally to the rear of the centre housing casing.

29 Transmission 29 Clutch In standard configuration the Massey Ferguson 3600 Series tractors are fitted with a mechanical shuttle transmission and a split torque clutch. In this configuration a hub with internal spines is bolted to the engine flywheel and provides drive through the centre of the gearbox to the PTO drive line. The main transmission utilises a 300mm diameter spring damped cerametalic clutch plate with a diaphragm type clutch cover assembly. Two version of drive plate are used, the MF 3640 uses a plate fitted with 5 pads whereas the MF 3660 uses a heavier duty plate with 6 pads. The clutch is controlled mechanically with a cable linked to the foot pedal. Damper Plate For tractors fitted with a PowerShuttle transmission the clutch unit is replaced by a clutch unit containing a pair of oil immersed clutches, one for forward and one for reverse. This clutch pack is also used to provide a break in the transmission drive to allow gear selection. In this configuration a damper plate is bolted to the engine flywheel and provides a constant drive to the clutch pack. Springs in the damper plate provide shock protection between the transmission and engine. The clutch unit is controlled electro-hydraulically.

30 Transmission 30 Gearbox Two gearbox specifications are available for the Massey Ferguson 3600 Series based around a standard 12 Forward x 12 Reverse Mechanical Shuttle configuration. PowerShuttle 24 x 12 transmission is standard equipment for all models with the Speedshift available as a deduct to provide 24 Forward x 24 Reverse speeds allowing the gearbox to be tailored to suit working conditions and customer requirements. All versions have a nominal maximum forward speed of 40kmh. 32 Transmission 32 24F x 24R Gearbox The transmission utilises three non synchronised mechanical ranges combined with four synchronised mechanical gears and an additional range in the form of an electro-hydraulic Speedshift unit to double the number of available ratios. The V, S and F models all have the range lever on the left side of the seat and the main gear lever on the right. With a conventional H pattern type operation. Change of direction is facilitated by a mechanical synchronised shuttle through a lever mounted on the instrument binnacle to the left hand side of the steering wheel. 33 Transmission 33 24F x 24R Gearbox Speedshift The Massey Ferguson 3600 Series can be specified with an electro-hydraulic Speedshift operated by a button switch mounted on the main gear lever knob. The Speedshift unit consists of a pair of oil immersed wet clutch packs mounted at the front of the gearbox. The clutches provide a powershift change between two ratios also giving a 15% reduction in speed between high and low. Speedshift Switch Speedshift Unit

34 Transmission 34 24F x 12R Gearbox PowerShuttle + Speedshift In applications where a high frequency of direction changes are required the new 24F x 12R gearbox with electro-hydraulic splitter is specified with PowerShuttle. The PowerShuttle is operated electrohydraulically by a lever on the left hand side of the steering column and allows forward reverse shuttling under power without the need to use the clutch pedal. PowerShuttle Lever V,GE,S,F In order to provide additional versatility all PowerShuttle tractors are also specified with Comfort Control. Comfort Control allows the operator to adjust the progressiveness of the direction change to provide maximum comfort dependant on the ground conditions and type of work being undertaken. Comfort Control V,S,F It is operated by a small rotary knob on the instrument panel for V, S and F.

35 Transmission 35 24F x 12R Gearbox PowerShuttle As with Speedshift the PowerShuttle unit consist of a pair of oil immersed wet clutch packs, one for forward and one for reverse, mounted in the front of the gearbox housing. The operation of the PowerShuttle is controlled by an electronic control unit which uses data from various sensors on the transmission to ensure that the direction change is correctly modulated, an accumulator in the hydraulic line also helps to ensure that the changes are made smoothly. As an additional benefit PowerShuttle tractors are also fitted with a declutch facility. The declutch is activated by a button switch on the main gear lever which disconnects the drive to allow gear selection and changes without the need to use the foot pedal. The PowerShuttle provides a speed reduction of 7.4% between forward and reverse. When PowerShuttle is specified a high capacity filter is fitted to the hydraulic system. De-clutch button Speedshift

40 Rear Axle 40 Brakes The Massey Ferguson 3600 Series is specified with multi-plate oil immersed disc brakes in the rear axle to provide safe and secure stopping. The brake units are mounted on the output shafts from the rear differential and utilise five 165mm diameter friction plates on each side. Brake Unit Operation is provided hydraulically by pendant mounted pedals via a master and slave arrangement with independent left and right hand braking available. On 4WD tractors the drive to the front axle is also engaged during braking to enhance safe stopping. Brake Pedals The hand brake is located on the left hand side of the operator s seat and provides operation of the brakes via mechanical linkage. Handbrake Lever

41 Rear Axle 41 Rear Differential Lock The rear differential lock utilises a mechanical dog clutch which is engaged by a small hydraulic cylinder. Operation is electro-hydraulic with a switch mounted on the console to the right of the operator s seat or instrument panel. A warning light in the instrument pack illuminates when the lock is engaged. A spring disengages the differential lock when it is switched off and it is automatically disengaged during braking requiring the switch to be depressed again to reengage it. Due to the mechanical design of the lock it is important that it is engaged when one wheel is just beginning to lose traction and not when one rear wheel is spinning and the other is stationary. Differential Lock Switch V,S,F Differential Lock 4WD 4WD Switch - V,S,F 4WD Drop Box The drive to the 4WD front axle also utilises a mechanical clutch unit which is contained in the drop box mounted underneath the rear axle centre housing. The clutch is spring on / pressure off design where it is engaged by spring pressure and disengaged electro-hydraulically. A switch on the right hand console / instrument panel is used to engage and disengage to drive. A warning light in the instrument panel illuminates to advise the operator when 4WD is engaged. To enhance safe stopping 4WD is automatically engaged during braking.

42 Rear Axle 42 Rear Axle The rear axle centre housing, brakes and differential are common to all versions of the MF 3600 Series. In order to provide the five different nominal tractor widths offered a number of final drive housings are used with different axle shaft lengths. 3 basic configurations are used providing a range of flange to flange dimensions. V S F Flange to Flange mm These axle configurations allied to the available wheel track settings allow the MF 3600 Series to fulfil customer requirements for various tractor widths.

45 Front axle 45 Four Wheel Drive For applications where additional traction and stability is required or heavy front mounted equipment is used the Massey Ferguson 3600 Series tractors can be specified with a 4WD front axle. 3 different widths of 4WD front axles are used to achieve the required nominal tractor widths. V S F Nominal Width mm Pivot Type High Centreline The 4WD front axle is a full duty design further enhancing tractor performance. The F tractors utilise a centre pivot front axle and feature a fully guarded drive shaft to prevent material wrapping around the shaft and provide optimum ground clearance. The V and S versions are specified with a high pivot design of 4WD front axle and have a similar drive shaft configuration. All axles are fitted with a limited slip differential to aid traction in slippery conditions or when working on steep terrain. The hydrostatic steering system utilises a balanced cylinder with twin drag links. Maximum steering angles range from 50 of 55 o again subject to tyre specification and track width settings. 4WD Front Axle F

46 Front axle 46 Manoeuvrability For VSF tractors optimum manoeuvrability is key to achieving optimum productivity and this is inevitably compromised by the need for narrow overall tractor widths to allow the required crop access. In order to optimise front axle turning angles Massey Ferguson 3600 Series V, S and F tractors are fitted with SuperTurn. 47 Front axle 47 SuperTurn Optimises manoeuvrability SuperTurn is made possible by key elements of the tractor design. Compact Engine Extended Wheelbase Sculptured / Waisted Front Axle Support The combination of the compact 3 cylinder SisuDiesel engine and an extended wheelbase of 2150mm have created nearly 100mm of additional clearance between the front of the engine and the centreline of the front axle. The additional clearance provides space for the front wheel when turning The sculptured and waisted design of the front axle casting further optimises the space available allowing maximum steering angles to be achieved even at the narrowest of track setting. On V and S tractors the use of a high pivot axle design also adds a further dimension to SuperTurn. By moving the pivot point to a higher position, it means that when the axle oscillates there is more clearance between the bonnet and the tyre. This provides improved stability because the tyres will remain on the ground more often and the turning circle will be reduced because there is more space for the wheels to turn. SuperTurn provides enhanced levels of manoeuvrability without the need for complex additional steering geometry with its implications for reduced tractor stability and increased maintenance.

50 Power Take Off 50 PTO All tractors feature an oil cooled independent hydraulic clutch mounted at the rear of the transaxle housing and controlled electrohydraulically by a switch on the right hand operator s console. The clutch unit contains six friction discs and has a modulated engagement for reduced shock loading during start up. The clutch unit also includes a brake which prevents the PTO output shaft from turning when the drive is disengaged. The PTO driveline is taken directly from a drive hub mounted to the engine flywheel keeping power losses to a minimum. PTO Engagement Switch - V,S,F IPTO Clutch Drive Hub Speed Selector Gears

51 Power Take Off 51 PTO continued The basic configuration provides a dual speed 540 revs/minute and 540 Economy. Where two alternate speeds are specified an external lever on the left hand side of the rear axle housing is used to select the required speed. This lever also has a neutral position allowing the output shaft to freely turn aiding connecting of the implement drive shaft. PTO Speed Selector The lever is moved between two switches to advise the operator, via the instrument panel, which speed is selected. The PTO output shaft is 35mm diameter with six splines for all speed options. The ratios in the PTO driveline are specified to fully utilise the power and torque characteristics of the engine. This enhances economy whilst ensuring that the correct PTO speed is maintained across varying load conditions. PTO Proportional Drive Selector PTO Output shaft

56 Hydraulic System 56 Hydraulic System Massey Ferguson 3600 Series tractors are fitted with an open centre hydraulic system based around an engine mounted tandem or triple pump. The one or two main elements of the pump supply the rear linkage and spool valves with up to 62 litres per minute at 190 bar. The secondary element supplies 21 litres per minute at 130 bar for steering, IPTO, lubrication and transmission functions. All the pump elements share a common suction line and an inline filter element. A pressure filter is fitted to the pressure line of the main pump/s to maintain oil cleanliness. The filter is easily accessible on the left hand side of the tractor for maintenance. Tractors specified with PowerShuttle transmission have a higher capacity filter fitted with a blockage sensor. The transaxle casing provides the reservoir for the hydraulic system and has a capacity of up to 39 litres. An oil cooler is also fitted on the return line from the main hydraulic control valve assembly.

60 Hydraulic System 60 MF 3600 Series V, S and F Spool Valves Configuration Features Option 3 Rear Valves Key 1 (SA/DA+DT+ZL+FD) / 1(DA+SRN+FLT) / 1 (SA/DA+DT+KO) GP321 SA : Single Acting. In a single action valve oil flows and returns through the same port and valve coupler. DA : Double Acting. In a double action valve oil flows out of one port and coupler and returns through the other port and coupler. Oil flow can normally be reversed to allow the extension and retraction of double action hydraulic cylinders. SRN :Spring Return to Neutral : The valve automatically return to neutral position when you release the lever. DT / KO : Detent / Kick out : (Constant flow) A valve with detent will stay in the selected position (manual operation), however with kick out the valve automatically kicks out to the neutral position when oil flow stops and pressure increases (Tipping a trailer). FLT : Float position. With float the valve can be set in a position to allow oil to move freely through the couplers in either direction. Float position on the valve has a detent. ZL : Zero leak. A zero leak valve does not allow oil to leak through the valve when it is in the neutral position. FR : Free flow return SA/DA : Single Acting/Double Acting. This type of valve can be converted to perform as either single action or double action. Right side of the valve, there is a small square screw to convert SA or DA. FD : Flow divider : A flow divider allows the flow of oil to be divided between two auxiliary valves or between one valve and the rear linkage lift / lower valve.

63 Rear Linkage 63 Rear Linkage The rear linkage for Massey Ferguson 3600 Series tractors utilise an internal lift cylinder giving a rated lift capacity of 2500kg. Linkage operation is fully mechanical with position and draft control available via a pair of levers on the right hand side of the operator s seat. Draft forces are sensed by the top link via a mechanical linkage to the control valve. Three alternative mounting positions are available for the top link to provide different levels of draft sensing, this can also be fine tuned via a sensitivity control beneath the operator s seat. Standard specification also includes rate of drop control alongside the draft sensitivity control.

68 Operator Environment 68 The Massey Ferguson 3600 Series tractors are available in a range of cab widths to meet the specific requirements for different tractor dimensions and different crop conditions. Adding to this is the availability of a footstep S variant to further tailor the range to specific customer needs. Key features, control layouts and instrumentation are shared by all versions providing a comfortable and functional work station irrespective of the model chosen or the environment in which the tractor is working.

69 Operator Environment 69 Three different operator station widths provide the MF 3600 Series with an operator station to meet all customer and operational requirements. This space has not been compromised when a cab is specified, these versions providing class leading accommodation with excellent visibility, access and comfort. At the same time consideration has been made to ensure that the external cab profile minimises potential crop damage.

70 Operator Environment 70 Cab V, S and F As the V, S and F tractors are available in a range of widths and designed to work in a wide variety of crop conditions the operator environment reflects these requirements. In order to provide the best working environment for tractors offering nominal widths from 1000mm to 1450mm two version of cab are available. This ensure that the compact dimensions of the tractors is also retained. The RC100 cab is fitted to the V models and provides a external width of 1000mm. For the S and F models the wider RC120 cab is specified providing an external width of 1200mm. Both cabs are modern, airy and spacious with an ergonomic control layout and offer exceptional levels of comfort and specification. However the RC120 cab also brings class leading accommodation to this type of tractor and provides a level of operator comfort and space previously unavailable in this sector of the market. Massey Ferguson engineers have designed and developed the RC100 and RC120 cabs to maximise available space and overcome many of the issues that affect operator comfort and access with specialist tractors.

71 Operator Environment 71 Cab V, S and F continued The large wide opening frameless doors offer unrivalled access to the cab from either side of the tractor. A simple non slip step mounted within the overall width of the cab aids easy access to and from the operator s seat. The control layout is designed to provide a minimum of obstacles that can restrict access for the operator with no controls mounted around the lower panels of the operator s console. In order to achieve a low overall tractor height the cab is mounted in a lower position on the tractor. As a result of this lower mounting position the RC100 and RC120 cabs have a tunnel floor over the transmission housing. The height and width of the tunnel has been kept to a minimum to maximise the space available for the operator s feet and to again enhance access to and from the cab. Either side of the tunnel the floor is clear of obstacles with pendant mounted clutch and brake pedals and no controls mounted to the tunnel.

72 Operator Environment 72 Cab V, S and F continued Lightly tinted glass throughout aids driver comfort and in conjunction with the slim cab pillars provides excellent visibility through 360 o. The wide doors which are mounted to the rear of the cab frame to further enhance visibility to the side whilst the curved rear side windows provide excellent rear ¾ vision. The opening rear and front windows can be latched to allow a small amount for ventilation or opened fully if additional access is required and each is supported by a gas strut. The ergonomic control layout means controls are logically placed and fall to hand easily. Controls for similar functions being grouped together. Air Suspended Seat is standard for all models The air suspended cloth seat is complemented by the standard telescopic steering wheel. Seats are fitted with a seat belt for added operator safety.

73 Operator Environment 73 Cab V, S and F continued A roof mounted air conditioning, heater and blower with four speed fan and recirculation facility improves operator comfort while pressurising to prevent dust from entering the cab. Air filtration is via a pair of external filters mounted in the side of the cab roof. A retractable front sun visor is also part of the standard specification and the cab is pre-wired for audio equipment with the speakers and an aerial fitted. Auxiliary power sockets are fitted in the right hand console and cable access is provided in the lower right hand corner of the rear screen. Externally the cab is specified with front wash / wipe and rear wiper It is also standard with a single rotating warning beacon. The external rear view mirrors can be folded across the windscreen to prevent crop damage if required. Cab mounted front and rear adjustable work lights complete the picture.

74 Operator Environment 74 Footstep S In some applications a cab tractor is unsuitable, unnecessary or undesirable and for these applications the tractors can be specified in a footstep configuration. The footstep versions share many features and the same ergonomic control layout as the cab versions, however an alternative console layout is specified to reduce possible interference between the crop and the controls. The ISO mounted platform straddles the transmission casing creating a tunnel floor to keep overall height to a minimum. The footstep versions feature a pair of short glass screens on either side of the instrument binnacle to reduce noise and keep the engine heat away from the operator. As with the cab tractors the platform is accessed by a single non slip step on either side of the tractor.

75 Operator Environment 75 Footstep S continued The reduced platform height of the footstep tractors also allows a smooth bonnet line and this, along with the down swept horizontal exhaust, further reduces the risk of crop damage. Grab handles are fitted to the rear fenders and the frames around the glass screens are also utilised to aid safe mounting and dismounting. Footstep tractors are fitted with a mid-mounted Roll Over Protection System (ROPS) for operator safety. For work in overhanging crops or low structures the ROPS can be folded forward around the engine to reduce overall tractor height. A vinyl covered air suspended vinyl seat and telescopic steering column are standard on the S footstep for the best in operator comfort. A rear view mirror and single rear work light are included in the standard specification. Auxiliary power sockets are fitted in the right hand console and the ROPS frame includes a rotating warning beacon. Large rubber floor mats also improve the quality of finish and reduce the noise level.

80 Electrics 80 Electrics Massey Ferguson 3600 Series tractors are fitted with a 12 volt / 105 Amp hour battery located behind the operator s seat. An 80 Amp hour alternator keeps the battery charged and provides power for auxiliary requirements. A grid heater is fitted in the inlet system to provide starting assistance in low temperatures. In addition to front and rear work lights the tractors feature full highway lighting. On V, S and F the front side light / indicator assembly can be pivoted to prevent it fouling with the crop.

81 Electrics 81 Electrics Continued The highway lighting is controlled by a rotary switch on the operator s console along with a toggle switch, complete with warning buzzer, to operate the indicators. The rotary knob also operates the horn. A separate push button switch is also fitted on the console for hazard warning lights. Additional mid-mounted work lights are available as an option on all versions. A seven pin trailer socket is also part of the standard specification. All tractors are fitted with a rotating warning beacon. Cab tractors are also fitted with a CD player/radio as standard Switches for work lights, front wiper and warning beacon are located on the right hand cab pillar.
