3 25 YEARS AND COUNTING Akrapovič is marking an important milestone in the company s history in 2016, when the Slovenian exhaust specialist celebrates its 25th anniversary. Since its inception in 1991, when founder Igor Akrapovič began tuning engines and making exhausts in his garage for local motorcycle racers, Akrapovič has grown to international recognition as the foremost manufacturer of premium exhaust products in the world. Racing has always been the lifeblood of Akrapovič, and, as the company celebrates its 25th anniversary, it also celebrated its 100 th world champion, a feat achieved when Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) won the MotoGP championship in 2015.

It combines state-ofthe-art exhaust system technologies with the latest innovations to ensure a premium driving experience combined with that instantly recognizable Akrapovič sound the best sound, right where you want it, just when you want it. The Akrapovič Sound Kit lets drivers switch between regular and sporty mode while driving, and actively create an extraordinary sound experience. This can be done at the simple touch of a button on the Sound Remote Controller, or via the Akrapovič Sound Kit Car app (available for ios and Android). TECHNOLOGY THE X-CONNECTION IS THE KEY INNOVATION The revolutionary aspect of the Akrapovič exhausts for the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupé/Cabriolet and Mercedes-AMG C 63 Sedan/Estate/Coupé is the presence of a dual sound character, achieved by introducing the active X-connection, where exhaust flows from both sides of the engine meet and mix. The X-connection is Akrapovič s key innovation, a carefully designed piece, cast from durable titanium, which includes a guided and precisely machined valve flap remotely controlled by the driver by simply pushing the Sound Remote Controller. With the valve flap open (i.e., with both gas flows mixing), the sound is fuller, more continuous and resonant, and slightly higher in frequency. When the valve flap is closed and there are two exhaust flows from both sides, you can feel the pure, strong sound of the exhaust gas shockwaves.

Absolute precision was required to create a revolutionary aspect of the exhaust, which is an active X-connection in the link pipes that allows exhaust gases to mix from both sides of the engine to create improved flow for better performance. The system has been created with durability in mind as well as performance. The use of special titanium alloys enabled the Akrapovič engineers to create an exhaust that is ultralight: 47% lighter than the stock system. The sound engineers refined the exhaust s intensity to ensure that the S 63 AMG Coupé/Cabriolet with its cylinder firing sequence and unique sound produces a rich, full, and pleasing tone from the eight-cylinder engine, alongside a second character that delivers a more pulsating and forcible roar. By simply pushing the button on the Sound Remote Controller, the driver can completely alter the sound of the S Coupé/Cabriolet because the kit controls the active X-connection used in an Akrapovič system for the first time ever which features a guided and precisely machined valve flap that allows the exhaust flows from both sides of the engine to meet and mix. The innovative Evolution Line system also marks the first time that a special technique of seamless integration between the titanium and carbon-fibre composites has been used to create a continuous finish for the system s tailpipes. These set off the rear of the car perfectly and add a signature touch that displays the technical knowhow and expertise of Akrapovič to the full.

The Evolution Line exhaust system consists of two mufflers, both incorporating titanium valves, which are cast in Akrapovič s in-house foundry. Another feature of this exhaust system is a unique active X-connection. Also created in the in-house foundry, the ultra-light active X-connection contains a valve flap in the middle designed to serve up optimal sound and performance results in every one of the car s modes. The active X-connection offers two defined sound characteristics and three different driving sound settings. In Comfort and Sport modes, the X-connection is open, producing a more continuous and refined sound with higher frequencies. The rear valves are closed at low revs in Comfort mode for a quieter and more comfortable ride, and in Sport mode the rear valves are usually open, delivering a sporty but still refined sound with enhanced higher frequencies. In Sport+ and Race modes, the middle valve is closed and the rear valves are open. This system is perfectly tuned by Akrapovič s sound engineers to maximize the sound output and give the cars a sporty and intense muscle car V8 roar, without losing any of the signature AMG sound and appeal. The optional Akrapovič Sound Kit controller lets users choose the exhaust mode regardless of the mode selected for the vehicle. This has a major impact on the sound and is a recommended upgrade when replacing the base exhaust system.
