Special Tool(s) 73III Automotive Meter 105-R0057 or equivalent Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) 418-F224, New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester 418-F052, or equivalent diagnostic tool with appropriate adapter cable Inspection and Verification 1. Verify the customer concern by operating the electronic audio system with the engine running and the vehicle in motion. 2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical Audio unit audio unit Digital audio compact disc (CD) changer Antenna and two-piece antenna cable Speakers mounting/speaker cones Audio ignition interference capacitor, audio frequency interference suppression bond and audio receiver hood bonding strap misaligned, corroded and/or loose Electrical Battery junction box (BJB) fuse (s): 1 (30A) 104 (40A) Central junction box (CJB) fuse (s): 18 (7.5A) 24 (5A) 32 (10A) (navigation) 33 (15A) Connectors Ignition switch Circuitry Audio unit 3. If the fault is not visually evident, proceed to the speaker walk-around test, audio unit self-diagnostic mode and the diagnostic tool. Speaker Walk-Around Test NOTE: To enter the speaker walk-around test or audio self-diagnostic mode, the audio unit must be turned on and in tuner mode (AM/FM1/FM2). 1. To enter the speaker walk-around test, simultaneously press the audio unit preset buttons 3 and 6 (except navigation) and buttons MAP and DEST (navigation). 2. The speaker walk-around test stops at each speaker and applies sound to each speaker for about one to two seconds. Each speaker is tested and displayed on the audio unit in the following sequence: RF, LF, LR, RR, subwoofer I, subwoofer II, (subwoofer II is not available on the Town Car). 3. If the vehicle is not equipped with CDDJ or if the CDDJ is not responding, NO CDDJ (dual media audio unit only) will be displayed. Audio Unit Self-Diagnostic Mode NOTE: To enter the speaker walk-around test or audio unit self-diagnostic mode, the audio unit must be turned on and in tuner mode (AM/FM1/FM2). 1. The audio unit self-diagnostic mode has six tests available: Preset button 1 = Audio internal/external SELF TEST. This test is an on-demand self-test. If SELF FAIL is displayed, press TUNE > to scroll view the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored. Refer to the Audio Unit Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index. If the system is OK, SELF PASS will be displayed. Preset button 2 = View/Clear continuous DTCs. NO DTCS is displayed if no DTCs are retrieved. If DTCS FOUND is displayed, press TUNE > to view the DTCs retrieved. Refer to the Audio Unit Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index. To clear all DTCs, press the EJECT button. DTCS CLEAR will be displayed. Preset button 3 = SIGNAL TEST. This test measures the average strength at the current tuner setting. Preset button 4 = Software configuration level. This test queries each radio system controller for its software configuration level. SOFT LEVELS will be displayed upon completion of the query. Press TUNE > to scroll view the software configuration version level. Preset button 5 = DISPLAY TEST. This test will light all the Dual Media Audio Unit display segments for 5 seconds. When the test is complete, DISPLAY TEST is displayed on the bezel. Preset button 6 = RADIO CONFIGURATION TEST. While in diagnostic mode, press Preset 6. "RADIO CONFIG" will be displayed. w press TUNE>. If the EQ download (at supplier plant) option and tuner configuration is not complete, then "NO CONFIG" will be displayed. If EQ download option and tuner configuration is done correctly, then Config 1 (options), Config 2 (tuner setting) and EQ ID (identifier for EQ file downloaded) will be displayed. 2. To enter these tests, press the desired preset button while in the speaker walk-around test or while in the self-diagnostic mode. 3. To exit the self-diagnostic mode, turn the ignition switch or the audio unit off.

2 Diagnostic Tool 1. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle: check that the program card is correctly installed. check the connections to the vehicle. check the ignition switch position. 2. NOTE: The audio unit must be in AM, FM1 or FM2 mode to enter the diagnostic tool diagnostics. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual. 3. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with: SCP or ISO circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section response/not equipped for audio unit, GO to Pinpoint Test A. System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the audio unit. 4. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Audio Unit Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. 5. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.
