PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The high pressure solenoid valve is a two-way type with one inlet and one outlet. It is a packless, internal pilot operated valve, suitable for use in releasing water pressure from the priming chamber of Viking Model E Series Deluge Valves and Viking Model H Series Flow Control Valves. The solenoid valve has floating diaphragm construction, which requires a minimum pressure drop across the valve to operate properly. This valve is available normally closed and has a voltage rating of 24 volt DC. This solenoid valve is for use with system control units that are listed and/or approved for releasing service for water based fire protection systems. 4. AP PROVALS See Ta ble 1 on page 217 b. B. 24 VDC Standard C. Easy to clean. D. Required Ac ces sories: A 50 mesh strainer must be installed on the inlet side of the valve at the priming line connection. This strainer is included as part of the Model E-1 Deluge Valve Trim and Model H Flow Control Valve Trim. E. NEMA 1 through 9. (See Ta ble 1 on page 217b.) 6. OPERATION The solenoid valve is an internal pilot operated valve with pilot and bleed orifices utilizing line pressure for operation. Normally closed, de-energized valves open when energized. Power is applied to the solenoid coil, causing the solenoid core to lift, opening the pilot orifice to the outlet side of the valve. This relieves pressure on the top side of the diaphragm and allows the line pressure to open the valve. When de-energized, the solenoid core reseals the pilot orifice, allowing the line pressure to build above the diaphragm, closing the valve. Normally closed solenoid valves are commonly used as releases for Viking deluge and flow control valves. Opening the solenoid valve allows the deluge or flow control valve to open. Note: When using a normally closed solenoid valve as a release, a system will not operate automatically on total loss of power. For this reason, it is recommended and normally required that an emergency back-up, supervised power supply be provided to maintain fire protection during interruptions of the main power system and to meet the requirements of appropriate Authorities Having Jurisdiction. 7. MAINTENANCE WARNING: The owner is re spon si ble for main tain ing the fire pro tec tion sys - tem in proper op er at ing con di tion. Any system maintenance or testing that involves placing a control valve or detection system out of service may eliminate the fire protection of that system. Prior to proceeding, notify all Authorities Having Jurisdiction. Consideration should be given to employment of a fire patrol in the affected area. WARNING: Prior to op er at ing the so le - noid valve, be sure to close the sys tem con trol valve to avoid un in ten tional op - er a tion of the de luge valve. A. In spec tions: It is im per a tive that the sys tem be in spected and tested on a reg u lar ba sis. The fre quency of the in spec tions may vary due to con tam - i nated wa ter sup plies, cor ro sive wa - ter sup plies, or cor ro sive at mo - spheres. In ad di tion, the alarm de - vices, de tec tion sys tems, or other con nected trim may re quire a more fre quent sched ule. Re fer to the sys - tem de scrip tion and ap pli ca ble codes for min i mum re quire ments. B. The valve must be operated at least monthly. The valve must open and close freely. When open, the water flow must be clear and clean at the proper flow rate. When closed, a total water shut-off must be observed. After the test, the strainer must be cleaned. Prior to cleaning the strainer, the priming line valve must be closed and the priming line depressurized. After the strainer is cleaned, the priming line valve must be reopened. C. The valve must be inspected at least monthly for cracks, corrosion, leakage, etc., and cleaned, repaired, or replaced as necessary. D. At least an nu ally, the valve diaphragms and seats must be in - spected and if nec es sary, re paired or re placed. WARNING: Close sys tem con trol valve, turn off power sup ply, and depressurize valve be fore dis as sem - bling valve. When lu bri cat ing valve com po nents, use a high grade sil i cone grease (Dow Corning 111 Com pound Lu - bri cant or equal). F. When reassembling, tighten parts to torque val ues in di cated in ASCO s main te nance in struc tions (packed with valve). G. Af ter main te nance is com pleted, op er ate the valve a few times to be sure of proper op er a tion. A me tal lic click sig ni fies the so le noid is op er - at ing. H. It is recommended that the valve be replaced at seven-year in ter vals. Shorter intervals may be required if the valve is subject to corrosive water supplies or atmospheres. I. All service must be performed by qualified per son nel. See ap pro pri ate sys tem de scrip tion and test ing in struc tions for ad di tional in - for ma tion. 10. INSTALLATION A. Check nameplate for correct unit, including voltage and mode of operation. Follow all installation and maintenance instructions enclosed with the valve. B. Standard solenoids may be mounted in any position. However, for optimum life and performance, solenoids should be mounted vertically and upright with the coil upright. C. A 50 mesh strainer is required on the inlet side of the valve at the priming line connection. This strainer is included as part of the Model E-1 Deluge Valve Trim. For valves equipped with water tight enclosures, the electrical fittings must be approved for use in the hazardous location. E. For this rea son, it is rec - om mended and nor mally re quired that an emer gency back-up, su per vised power sup ply be pro vided to main tain fire pro tec tion dur ing in ter rup tions of the main power sys tem and to meet the re quire ments of ap pro pri ate Au thor ities Hav ing Ju ris dic tion. When nor mally open so le noid valves are used as re leases for de luge or flow con trol valves, they must be en er gized con stantly to main tain sys tems in the set con di tion; any loss or in ter rup tion of power to the so le noid valve will al low the sys tem to trip. Normally open so le - noids are used as re leases in spe cial ap pli ca tions re quir ing a fail-safe, sys - tem trip ped con di tion on to tal loss of power. A 50 mesh strainer is re quired at the prim ing line con nec tion on the in let side of the valve. This strainer is in - cluded as part of the Model E-1 De luge Valve Trim. In stall the strainer as indi - cated on Vi king s trim draw ing. Install the so le noid ac cord ing to mark ings on the valve body. Ap ply pipe-joint com - pound spar ingly to male pipe threads only. If ap plied to valve threads, it may en ter the valve and cause op er a tion dif - fi culty or leak age.
