Perimeter extraction is a process whereby a mechanical obstacle is placed between the hood and the cooking area, thus creating a more efficient extraction process.

31 FACTS ABOUT RANGEHOOD PERFORMANCE Ducted or recirculated? Ducting the filtered air direct to the atmosphere is preferred as the heat, humidity and odours are largely removed from the kitchen. If it is impossible or impractical to duct the rangehood to the outside, recirculation is available with most rangehoods. In this case, the filtered,cleaner air is recirculated to the kitchen unfortunately, so is the heat and odours. The odour effect can be diminished with the insertion of an activated charcoal filter(s) above the metal grease filters and below the intake. Charcoal filters are not to be washed, but are replaceable. Ducting material Smeg recommends using smooth internal walled ducting material to enhance flow efficiency and diminish noise. Galvanised sheet metal and fire-rated PVC piping plus related specialist parts are readily available from a specialist retailer.
