4 Introduction This user manual will cover the 12v and 24v version of the Pilot Gas Valve Controller (GVC). The GVC is intended to be used as an add-on for other Pilot products such as the Twin Channel Gas Alarm and the Mini Gas Alarm. This allows your gas supply to be switched off in the event of an LPG alarm on your boat. The GVC can also be used as a stand-alone device so you can turn on/off your boat's gas supply with the push of a button. The Pilot range of gas monitoring alarms are important and cost effective items of safety equipment wherever LPG or other dangerous vapours may be present. However good a gas installation may be, there is always a chance that a potentially lethal leak may occur. Many of the vapours present on boats such as butane, propane and petrol vapour are heavier than air. Even a small leak can soon build up to dangerous proportions in the bilges of a boat. 6 Installation Warning: Disconnect the power supply before proceeding with the installation. Power Supply The power supply from your boat should match the specification of valve that you have purchased. This will either be 12v or 24v which is noted on the side of the solenoid valve. The power supply must come from the vessel's Master Switch in order to activate the valve controller whenever the power is on. Suitable Installation Locations Valve The main unit must be in a location that is protected from the elements and the ventilation holes should not be covered up. There are three holes in the bottom of the case for routing the supply, and valve cables. There is also a larger hole in the back of the system if needed. The solenoid valve should be connected down stream of the regulator and as close to it as possible. The base of the valve is marked 1 and 2 for gas in and gas out. 3

7 Procedure The GVC can be used in two ways: Linked together with a Twin Channel or Mini Gas Alarm. This allows valve to be automatically switched off in the event of an LPG alarm. As a stand-alone device which will simply be an electronic switch open/close a your solenoid gas valve. Stand-alone Procedure 1. Open the GVC by removing the side screws and separating the two halves of the case. 2. Mount the back half of the case to a vertical surface using the mounting holes. 3. Pass a suitable two-core power supply cable and a two-core valve cable through the routing holes. Draw sufficient cable through the holes to enable connections to the PCB in the front half of the case. 4. Get a small piece of wire and connect terminal 8 and 9 of the GVC together. This puts the GVC into stand-alone mode. 5. All of the connections for the PCB terminals are shown at the bottom of this section (Diagram 1).The valve does not have polarity so it can be connected either way around. 6. Ensure that the wiring is correct and fit the two halves of the casing back together. 7. Switch on the power at the master switch. 4

8 Diagram 1: Stand-alone GVC Wiring Procedure for Linking with Mini/Twin 1. Follow the first two steps of the stand-alone procedure. 2. Draw a three-core cable through the holes in the enclosure for the gas alarm and a two-core cable for the solenoid valve. 3. Follow one of the wiring diagrams below. Diagram 2 for the Mini or diagram 3 for the Twin. The valve does not have polarity so it can be connected either way around. 4. Follow steps 5, 6 and 7 of the stand-alone procedure. 5

10 Operation When the GVC is initially switched on, the LEDs will flash for a few seconds. When the GVC is ready, the green LED will be switched on. If the GVC is linked in with a Mini/Twin Gas Alarm, you will have to wait until the sensors initialise before you can open the valve. To open the valve, press the button. This will switch on the red LED and the gas supply on your boat will be on. To close the valve, press the button again. This will switch the LED off and the gas supply will be off. In the event of an LPG alarm, the GVC will automatically close the valve to switch off the gas supply. You will not be able to turn on the gas supply during an alarm. Once the alarm has stopped, you will need to press the button to re-open the gas valve. 7
