Exterior Lights How the s Circuit Works USA WARNING A transient high tension (25,000 V) occurs at the bulb sockets of the high intensity discharge (HID) lamps when the combination light switch is turned ON. It may cause serious electrical shock or electrocution if you do not observe the cautions below. CAUTION Never turn on the combination light switch before fitting the HID bulbs to their bulb sockets and completing the reassembly of the headlight assembly. Do not service the headlight assembly in wet conditions, such as rain or snow, near a sprinkler system, or when your hands are wet to prevent electrocution. Do not touch the surface of the HID bulbs with your bare hands and do not stain it with any oils or fats. Do not disassemble the inverter unit and the igniter unit. Do not turn on the HID bulb by using a power source other than the battery mounted on the vehicle. Flash-to-Pass When you hold the flash-to-pass switch in the ON position, ground is applied through the BLU/RED wire to the coils of the headlight relays. The relays are then energized, applying battery voltage to the left and right high and low beam headlights through fuses 43 and 45. The low beam bulbs come on because the opposite terminal is tied to ground. The high beams and indicator also come on because the opposite terminal is provided a path to ground through the closed flash-to-pass switch. Auto-off Lights Function The headlight relays are controlled by the driver s multiplex control unit. If you leave the headlight switch in the HEAD position and exit the vehicle, the control unit will automatically turn the exterior lights off within 5 seconds after you close the doors. When you unlock or open the driver s door, the control unit automatically turns the lights back on. Refer to the Service Manual (Section 22, Body Electrical) for specific tests or troubleshooting procedures. High and Low Beams The headlight relays receive battery voltage at all times, and are controlled by the driver s multiplex control unit. When you turn the headlight switch to the HEAD position, ground is applied through the BLU/RED wire to the coils of the headlight relays. The relays are then energized, applying battery voltage to the left and right high and low beam headlights through fuses 43 and 45. The low beam bulbs come on with the dimmer switch in LOW or HIGH because the opposite terminal is tied to ground. The ground path for the high beams and indicator is through the dimmer switch. With the dimmer switch in LOW the path is interrupted and the high beams remain off, but in HIGH a ground path is provided and the high beams come on American Honda Motor Co., Inc. 0-6

TL - Combination Light Switch Test/Replacement. Remove the driver's dashboard lower cover.. 2. Remove the steering column covers.. 3. Disconnect the 4P connector (A) from the combination light switch (B). 4. Remove the two screws, then pull out the combination light switch.
5. Inspect the connector terminals to be sure they are all making good contact. If the terminals are bent, loose or corroded, repair them as necessary, and recheck the system. If the terminals look OK, check for continuity between the terminals in each switch position according to the tables. - If there is no continuity, replace the switch.
TL - HID (High Intensity Discharge) Lamp System Troubleshooting Never turn on the combination light switch before fitting the HID bulbs to their bulb sockets and completing the reassembly of the headlight assembly.. Check the No. 43 (20 A) and No. 45 (20 A) fuses in the under-hood fuse/relay box. Are the fuses OK? YES - Go to step 2. NO - Replace the fuse (s), and recheck. 2. Substitute a known-good HID bulb and turn the combination light switch ON. Does the headlight low beam come on? YES - Replace the original HID bulb. NO - Go to step Disconnect the 2P connector from the inverter unit. 4. Turn the combination light switch ON. 5. Measure voltage between the No. 2 terminal of the inverter unit 2P connector and body ground. Is there battery voltage? YES - Go to step 6. NO - Repair open in the wire between the under-hood fuse/relay box and the inverter unit. 6. Turn the combination light switch OFF. 7. Check for continuity between the No. terminal of the inverter unit 2P connector and body ground. Is there continuity?
8. Measure resistance between the No. and B terminals and the No. 2 and A terminal of the igniter unit. Is there about -2? YES - Substitute a known-good inverter, and recheck. If the symptom goes away, replace the original inverter unit. NO - Replace the igniter unit. f 2
