Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided. General Safety Precautions Caution: Fiber optic cables may be damaged if bent or curved to a radius that is less than the recommended minimum bend radius. Always observe the recommended bend radius limit when installing fiber optic cables and patch cords. Danger: Exposure to laser radiation can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned-off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end. Caution: Improper handling can damage fiber optic cables. Do not bend fiber optic cable more sharply than the minimum recommended bend radius specified by the cable manufacturer. Do not apply more pulling force to the cable than specified. Do not compress the fiber or allow it to kink. Page 2
3 1 DESCRIPTION The LPC 12/24 enclosure (hereafter referred to as the LPC enclosure) is a rack-mount terminal designed for customer premise applications and other remote fiber locations that require a lowprofile cabinet. The LPC enclosure, shown in Figure 1, is available in a 12 or 24 fiber version. Both versions are pre-loaded with SC adapters, SC ultra PC ribbon pigtail assemblies, and splice trays that support mass fusion or single fiber splicing. 6 3 CABLE INSTALLATION The following sections provide instructions for securing a ribbon-type fiber optic cable to the rear of the LPC enclosure and for routing the cable fiber ribbon to a splice tray. The LPC-12 enclosure is pre-loaded with one 12-fiber ribbon pigtail assembly and the LPC-24 is pre-loaded with two 12-fiber ribbon pigtail assemblies. The pigtail assemblies are routed to the splice tray(s) and are ready for splicing to the fiber optic cable. The tools and materials required for completing these sections include the following: Phillips screwdriver (#2) Tools to strip off the cable sheath to expose the fiber ribbons Tape measure Pen or marker Wire cutter Breakout kit for fiber ribbon (recommended) 3.1 Securing Cables to the Enclosure The fiber optic cable may be routed to the LPC enclosure from either the left or right side. Before starting, remove the enclosure rear cover to provide full access to the splice trays and the cable attachment points at the rear side of the enclosure. Two methods may be used to attach the cable to the enclosure. Use the method that is appropriate for the installation and that complies with local practice. 1. Route the fiber optic cable to the rear of the LPC enclosure and remove approximately 64 inches of cable sheathing to expose the fiber ribbon(s). Note: Removing 64 inches of sheath will provide sufficient length for coiling the fiber ribbon(s) at least once around the splice tray(s). This will also provide sufficient ribbon length for a slack loop within the splice tray. 2. If required by local practice, install a breakout kit to protect the fiber ribbon(s). Follow the installation instructions provided with the kit. Note: A breakout kit is recommended when installing ribbon cable. The breakout kit includes a plastic tube that protects the fiber ribbon and prevents damage. 3. Secure the cable to the enclosure using either a cable clamp kit (must be ordered separately) or a stainless steel clamp as shown in Figure 5. Note: If possible, the cable should be attached to the side of the enclosure that will allow the cable fibers to be coiled around the splice tray in the same direction as the pigtail assembly is coiled. This will greatly simply removal of the splice tray for splicing. Page 6
