Crimp it Solder it Seal it Why Use Heat Shrink Terminals? CORROSION When using a standard crimp terminal, the wire is exposed to moisture and other contaminants. Over time, the wire starts to corrode which reduces the current carrying capacity of the electrical system. BUTT CONNECTORS Sealed for superior durability PULL-OUT In most cases, electrical connectors must operate in adverse conditions: heat, cold, vibration, strain, etc. These conditions can cause the wire or wires to pull-out of the connector. COMPUTER TERMINAL MAKE UP TECHNIQUES Terminal Extraction. (A) Push-To-Seat Terminals Grasp the lead and push the terminal to the forward most position. Hold lead in this stop position. (B) Pull-To-Seat Terminals Grasp the lead and pull the terminal to the forward most position. Hold lead in this stop position. 2. Locate terminal lock tang in connector canal. 3. Insert pick straight into the connector canal at the mating end of the connector. 4. Depress lock tang to unseat terminal. Never use force to remove terminal from connector. 5. (A) Push-To-Seat Terminals Gently Pull the cable to remove the terminal through the back (wire end) of the connector. (B) Pull-To-Seat Terminals Gently Push the cable to remove the terminal through the front (mating end) of the connector. 6. Look for terminal and connector damage. Replace if necessary. 18 Bundling & Miscellaneous How to Use Heat Shrink Tubing CAUTION: Disconnect battery cables before applying heat shrink tubing!. Select tubing to assure a tight fit after shrinkage. Consider the outside dimension of the terminal when determining tubing diameter. Shrink ratios: 3: for double wall tubing; 2: for single wall. 2. Cover at least 2 of the terminal barrel and of the cable. 3. Apply heat evenly to all areas of the tubing. When tubing starts to shrink, focus heat at center of tubing and move heat toward ends to eliminate any trapped air.
