3 Introduction This manual is intended to describe basic setup and operations procedures. Specifi c applications may require unique confi gurations or procedures not described in this manual. Always use appropriate tools and techniques for your operation. Always follow site safety regulations. Never use the equipment in a manner that will harm people or damage the equipment. Safety Precautions Wear protective clothing, including safety glasses and steel-toe boots. Do not allow loose clothing or long hair near machine operations. Ensure there is adequate clearance for your operations. Do not rush the job. Read and understand all safety instructions and operating procedures before attempting any cutting operation. Call Mactech s toll free number ( ) if any problems are encountered. Before connecting hoses to the machine be sure all components are tightly secured. Make sure the drill is secured to the work surface before starting the machine. Do not touch or rest your hand on or near any moving parts or sharp edges. Disconnect air or hydraulic hoses before removing the drill from the work surface. Never move the drill while connected to the power source. Always turn off control valves and disconnect hoses before moving the drill. ii

4 Description Mactech s Dual Magnet Drill is intended for subsea and topside drilling of pipe, casing, structures, decks and other applications where heavy duty portable drilling is required. The Dual Magnet Drill is ideal for drilling large rigging and vent holes in casing. A precision slide and bracket assembly provides an extremely rigid platform for the most demanding jobs. The powerful motor cuts through the toughest casing and aggregate. Super strong rare earth magnets provide a secure and stable base that can be mounted on any ferrous surface. The Dual Magnet Drill cuts up to 8 inch holes. The 1 inch straight quill accepts standard drill bits, hole saws and end mills. Two styles of mounting arms included with each drill allow a variety of mounting options on fl at or curved surfaces. 8 Installation and Setup Dual Magnet Drill Installation NOTE: Before attaching the drill to the workpiece clear your work area of all obstructions. Clean the area where the drill is to be attached to ensure the magnetic attachment bases will hold the drill securely. Do not connect the power supply until the drill is securely attached and ready for use. Installation on pipe or casing: See Figure Select the mounting bar style for your application, either fl at or raised. The fl at mounting bar is for use on fl at surfaces or larger diameters. The raised mounting bar is for use on smaller diameters. 2. Position the drill at the desired location on the workpiece. Adjust the position of the magnetic attachment bases to fi t the profi le. Both magnetic attachment bases should be at approximately the same angle, with the drill centered between Figure 1 - Installation on Pipe or Casing the magnets. Pull both magnetic attachment base handles to secure the drill to the workpiece. 3. Tighten all fasteners. Make sure the magnetic attachment base handles are fully engaged. Installation on a flat surface: See Figure Use the fl at mounting bar to mount the drill on fl at surfaces. 2. Attach the drill to a fl at surface with the magnetic attachment bases. Square and level the drill to the workpiece as required. 3. Pull both magnetic attachment base handles to secure the drill to the workpiece. 4. Tighten all fasteners. Make sure the magnetic attachment base handles are fully engaged. Figure 2 - Installation on Flat Surface 2-1

9 Motor Installation Air Motor: See Figure Attach the motor mount to the bottom of the motor with six 5/16-18 x 7/8 fl at socket head cap screws. 2. Align the key on the motor shaft with the keyway in the drill head. Attach the motor with motor mount to the drill head with two 1/2-13 x 1-1/4 hex socket head cap screws. 3. Make sure all fasteners are tight. Turn the air supply control valves off. Connect air supply hoses to the motor, open the control valves and test run the motor to check speed and direction. Hydraulic Motor: See Figure Align the key on the motor shaft with the keyway in the drill head. Attach the motor with motor mount to the drill head with two 1/2-13 x 1-1/4 hex socket head cap screws. 2. Make sure all fasteners are tight. Turn the air supply control valves off. 10 Air Power Setup See Figure Turn off the control valve from the air supply and the control valve on motor. 2. Connect the air supply line to the air caddy. Connect the hose from the air caddy to the drill air motor. Make sure fi ttings are secure. 3. To supply power to the drill, fi rst open the control valve on the air caddy, then open the control valve on the drill motor. Figure 5 - Air Supply Setup 2-3

11 Hydraulic Power Setup See Figure 6. NOTE: The following procedure describes a typical setup using a Mactech supplied hydraulic power unit. Other hydraulic power units that meet power supply requirements may be used with the Dual Magnet Drill. See page 2 of this manual for hydraulic power supply requirements. 1. Make sure the power to the hydraulic power unit is turned off. 2. Connect hoses to couplings on the hydraulic power unit. Connect hoses to the drill hydraulic motor. Make sure all fi ttings are tight and secure. 3. Turn on hydraulic power unit by pressing the power switch on the hydraulic power unit pendant control. The indicator light on the hydraulic power unit will illuminate when power is on. 4. Select the drill rotation direction by turning the direction control knob on the pendant control. 5. Turn the speed control dial on the pendant control to the desired speed. 6. To quickly cut power to the hydraulic power unit, press the emergency stop button on the pendant control. 12 Operation NOTE: Read and understand the safety precautions on page ii of this manual before using this equipment. Drilling Holes: See Figure Install the drill onto the workpiece as described in section Connect the air or hydraulic power supply as described in section Install and secure the drill chuck into the quill. Insert and tighten the drill bit into the chuck. Activate power and run the drill slowly to check function and speed. 4. Use the air control valve or hydraulic speed control to adjust drilling speed. Lower the tool bit to the workpiece with the feed handwheel. Make sure the thumb screw on the graduated collar is loose to allow motion of the drill head. Apply coolant to the drill bit as required. 5. When the drilling operation is completed, Figure 7 - Operation back the drill bit away from the workpiece and close the air control valve, or cut power to the hydraulic power unit to stop the drill motor. 6. Disconnect the air or hydraulic hoses. Remove the drill from the workpiece and perform cleaning and maintenance procedures. NOTE: The drilling operation is continuous until terminated by the operator. Close the air control valve or cut power to the hydraulic power unit to stop the drill motor. Tapping Holes: NOTE: A reversible motor is required for tapping holes. Contact Mactech for recommendation of the motor required for your application. 1. Follow the procedure for drilling holes. Use a tapping bit and dial indicator for precise hole locations. 2. When the tapping operation is completed, back the tapping bit away from the workpiece and close the air control valve, or cut power to the hydraulic power unit to stop the drill motor. 3. Disconnect the air or hydraulic hoses. Remove the drill from the workpiece and perform cleaning and maintenance procedures. 3-1

13 Cleaning and Maintenance Cleaning and maintenance are critical steps to maintain the operation and life of the drill. When using the drill in offshore applications, it is very important to clean and maintain the drill after each use and before storage. After each use: 1. Immediately after use clean the drill with a solvent. Apply rust inhibitors and store in a dry area. Lubricate the slide regularly. 2. After 250 hours of continuous use return the drill to a Mactech service facility for inspection and thorough maintenance. Offshore cleaning and maintenance: See Figure Immediately after lifting from the water spray off the entire drill with freshwater. Use compressed air to dry the drill as thoroughly as possible. 2. Disassemble the drill. Remove the motor, tooling, mounting bars and magnetic attachment bases. Lubricate the magnetic attachment bases by injecting grease into the zerk near the handle. 3. Remove the drill head from the slide saddle. Disassemble the drill head. Clean all parts thoroughly. Inspect all parts for wear or damage. Inject grease into the bearings until all water is purged and replaced with fresh grease. Reassemble the drill head and inject with grease until it comes out the back of the drill head. Apply marine grade anti-seize lubricant to fastener threads. 4. Remove the handwheel and graduated collar to access the feedscrew bearings. Inject grease into the bearings until all water is purged and replaced with fresh grease. 5. Remove the saddle from the slide by removing the two screws holding the saddle onto the feedscrew nut. Thoroughly lubricate the feedscrew and slides with grease. 6. Reassemble the saddle to the slide. Apply red Loctite to the two screws holding the saddle onto the slide. Reassemble the graduated collar and handwheel onto the slide assembly. Figure 8 - Offshore Maintenance 4-1

14 7. Check the threads of the hydraulic whip hoses by test threading the male and female ends together. 8. Reassemble the remaining drill components. Apply marine grade anti-seize lubricant to fastener threads. 9. If prepping the drill for storage apply a light coat of SP400 protectant over the entire outside surfaces of the drill. NOTE: Do not over apply SP400. SP400 is to be used as a protectant only, and may damage the drill if used on internal or moving parts. Limit the application to external and stationary parts of the drill. 4-2
