Your life and the lives of others depend on it! General Information These instructions explain how to install a 3PYP Steering Kit. One kit updates one planter. These instructions apply to an installation of any one of the following kits. One kit includes: see Kit Contents on page 17. Front Page Part Lists 3PYP Steering Pre-Assembly Preparation Tools Required suitable tractor for raising implement basic hand tools 2 lb. hammer pry bars for steering arm weldment removal tie rod removing tool or pickle fork magnetic drill with 3 16 in, 7 16 in, in, in size drill bits center punch tool sander acetylene torch, welding visor and gloves C-clamp one can of Zep Lubeze Drill Chill cutting oil aerosol one can of anti-seize lubricant white marking pen Great Plains green spray paint (p/n C) fire extinguisher Work Location 1. Move the implement to a location with: flat, smooth non-flammable surface free of combustibles adequate illumination clear surface beneath for recovery of any falling or dropped parts Prepare Implement 2. Raise implement with tractor. 3. Secure for safety. Crushing and Sharp Object Hazards: Be careful working under raised implement. (A height where you can access the center steering arm and also be able to operate the drill comfortably in a standing position at the caster arm.) 2. Remove cotter pin 61 (not visible in photo) and castle nut 60 holding tie rod end to caster weldment 54. Remove the cotter pin 61 and castle nut 60 attaching each tie rod end to the center steering arm weldment 51. Measure center to center length of old tie rods to set new tie rods to length, see Install New Tie Rods on page 14. Remove the two cotter pins 61 holding the two cylinder pins 62 to the center steering arm weldment 51. Using 5 8 in wrench remove two bolts 59 from retainer trunnion 55. Remove both cylinder pins 62 and move the right cylinder 63 aside. The left cylinder remains attached as is. Save bolts, pins and trunnion for reuse C HHCS 5/8-11X5 GR D RETAINER TRUNION C CYL 3X8 TRUN 8. Take set screw 58 and key 57 out of center arm steering weldment 51. Save for reuse. With pry bar remove center steering arm weldment 51 from shaft steering spindle 56. Front Page Part Lists 3PYP Steering Install New Center Steering Arm Weldment Refer to Figure 6, Figure 8 and Figure Make sure new center steering arm 12 is oriented correctly - the larger diameter of the tapered holes must be on top. (The taper spirals downward with smaller diameter on the bottom.) Also notice if correctly oriented the set screw 58 is located on the top part of the center arm weldment Put key 57 back in place and then set screw Coat the shaft steering spindle 56 with anti-seize. 13. Use a C-clamp to aid in maneuvering new center steering arm 12 in place. 14. Slide new steering arm weldment 12 onto top of steering spindle shaft 56. Reinsert both cylinder pins 62 and secure with cotter pins 61. Front Page Part Lists 3PYP Steering Prepare to Drill Holes in Caster Steering Arm Weldment Refer to Figure 12 A new steering arm weldment piece is installed on the existing caster arm to accommodate the new larger size tie rod end. Three holes are drilled (at Step 24) in the existing caster arm where the new steering arm weldment will be bolted onto it. Use left and right guides to line up with edge of either the right or left caster arm you are working on. Figure 13 Template Refer to Figure Place template 17 on caster arm being sure to line up edge with appropriate line on template. 20. MAKE SURE the end hole of the template lines up with the end hole on the caster arm Hold template in place while making three center punch marks for hole placement. 22. Use caster arm to support magnetic drill and drill three holes at center punch marks. Note: The three holes should be in size when finished. Take out metal in increments by using gradually bigger drill bit sizes: 3 16 in, 7 16 in, in, and finally in. Note: Spray Lubeze Drill Chill on drill bits as needed to keep bits cooled. Front Page Part Lists 3PYP Steering Bolt On New Steering Arm Weldment Refer to Figure Make sure the larger diameter of the tapered hole faces up and the smaller diameter of the hole faces the ground. Secure with new castle nut provided with kit. After length is set as described in Step 38, secure with new cotter pin supplied with kit. 16 16 Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. Front Page Part Lists 3PYP Steering Refer to Figure Before securing with cotter pins and to prevent bending them, check tire toe in/toe out. Pivot both casters until the tires are close to full trailing (straight running) orientation. All measurements must be made with the tires in a position to have the planter traveling straight forward. Measure the distance (D) from the center of one tire to the center of the other tire both in front of the tires as well as behind the tires. The measurements are to be equal. If the measurement across the front of the tires is less than the measurement across the back of the tires then the tie rod needs to be lengthened. If the measurement across the front is more than the measurement across the back then the tie rod needs to be shortened. Make the appropriate adjustment then re-center the tires and take another set of dimensions. Repeat as necessary until the dimensions are equal. Do NOT have any toe in or toe out. Tighten the lock nuts on the ends of the tie rod. (Right side has right-hand thread and left side has left-hand thread.)
