1 OWNER S GUIDE & INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Sealcast and Cast Resin Transducers Record the information found on the tag for future reference. Part No. Date Frequency khz with Airmar Fairings Models: M155, R155, M172, and M rev. 04 2/03 IMPORTANT: Please read these instructions completely before proceeding with the installation. These instructions supersede any other instructions in your instrument manual if they differ. CAUTION: NEVER USE SOLVENTS Cleaners, fuel, paint, sealants, and other products may contain strong solvents, such as acetone, which attack many plastics greatly reducing their strength. Mounting Location Acoustic Noise Acoustic noise is always present and these sound waves can interfere with the operation of the. Ambient (background) noise from sources such as: waves, fish, and other vessels cannot be controlled. However, carefully selecting the s mounting location can minimize the effect of vessel generated noise from the propeller(s) and shaft(s), other machinery, and other echosounders. The lower the noise level, the higher the echosounder gain setting that can be used. Placement Carefully study the to determine the best mounting location. Mount the away from the propeller and other sources of vessel generated noise (see Figure 1). Mount where the water is smoothest with a minimum of turbulence and bubbles. Water near the bow and keel can be quite aerated. Locate the about 1/3 aft LWL. Generally, this provides the best compromise between obtaining aeration-free water away from the bow and minimizing propeller noise. Mount the on the side of the where the propeller(s) is moving downward. The upward motion of the propeller generates pressure waves and pushes bubbles up against the. By mounting on the downward side, the shades the from this effect (see Figure 2). The deeper the protrudes into the water, the less aeration. Do not mount the in an area of turbulence or bubbles: Near water intake or discharge openings Behind strakes, fittings, or irregularities Behind eroding paint (an indication of turbulence) External Mount AIRMAR Urethane Fairing Nearly all vessels have some deadrise angle at the s mounting location. If the is mounted directly to the, the sound beam will be tilted off the vertical at the same angle as the deadrise. If the deadrise angle at the mounting location exceeds 10 a is strongly recommended (see Figure 2). Orients the sound beam straight down by mounting the parallel to the water s surface Minimizes aerated water flowing over the s face by mounting it deeper in the water Made of high impact urethane with an integrated cutting guide, the Airmar is easy to cut with a band saw and shape with hand tools. The 3 incline angle shades the s face from propeller noise (see Figure 1). 3 incline angle pressure waves Transom View slope of deadrise angle parallel to waterline LWL (Load Waterline Length) 1/3 aft aeration, cavitation and turbulence minimizes aerated water flowing over the s face by mounting it deeper in the water Figure 1. The also has a center access cavity for the stuffing tube and service loop (see Figure 3). Identify Your Model and Fairing Part Numbers The model name is printed on the tag. Model Airmar Part No. M155, R155, M M Cutting the Fairing 1. Measure the deadrise angle of the at the selected location using a digital level, or bubble level and protractor (see Figure 2). 2. Tilt the band saw table to the measured angle and secure the cutting fence (see Figure 4). Caution: The arrow will be pointing forward toward the bow after the is installed (see Figure 3). M177 The is symmetrical. 3. Place the on the table so the cutting guide rests against the fence. The arrow will be pointing toward you for installation on the port side and away from you for installation on the starboard side of the boat (see Figure 4). Be sure to orient the on the band saw so the angle cut matches the intended side of the and not the mirror image. Warning: Always wear safety goggles and a dust mask. 4. Recheck steps 1 through 3; then cut the. 5. Shape the to the as precisely as possible with a rasp or power tool. 6. The remaining section of the with the cutting guide will be used as the inside the. It will provide a level surface for tightening the nuts on the threaded rods (see Figure 5). Choosing a Stuffing Tube Installation of the requires a stuffing tube. The stuffing tube seals the forming a water-tight conduit for the. These instructions are written specifically to install an Airmar stuffing tube. Another stuffing tube can be used, but special care must be taken to insure the tube will form a tight seal with the. Airmar can furnish stuffing tube dimensional drawings if required. The stuffing tube must be compatible with the material (see table below). Aluminum Use a stainless steel stuffing tube. Never use a bronze stuffing tube in an aluminum as electrolytic corrosion will occur. 3 Installing a Threaded Stem Stuffing Tube 1. At the selected mounting location, inspect the interior to ensure that there is clearance for the stuffing tube and threaded rods. Be sure no s, ribs, or struts will interfere. Mark the site for the stuffing tube. Warning: Always wear safety goggles and a dust mask. 2. From inside the, drill a 3mm or 1/8" diameter pilot hole perpendicular to the. If there is a irregularity near the selected mounting location, drill from the outside. 3. Outside the at the pilot hole, drill a 28mm or 1-1/8" diameter hole perpendicular to the surface (see Figure 5). Warning: The must be installed parallel to the keel to ensure proper boat handling and water flow over the. 4. Locate the holes for the threaded rods by positioning the Airmar at the selected location. Be sure the arrow points forward toward the bow. M177 The is symmetrical. Center the hole for the stuffing tube inside the access cavity. The must be parallel to the centerline of the boat (keel). Using the as a guide, drill two 10mm or 13/32" diameter holes through the for the threaded rods. 5. Sand and clean the area around the holes, inside and outside, to ensure that the marine sealant will adhere properly. Remove any petroleum residue before sanding. Aluminum Remove all burrs. 6. Remove the nuts, washers, and bushing from the stuffing tube. Use marine sealant to seal the and hold the flange nut securely in place. Apply a 2mm (1/16") thick layer of marine sealant to (see Figure 6): The flange that makes contact with the. The side wall of the stuffing tube, 6mm (1/4") higher than the combined thickness of the,, and flanged nut (or nut and washer). The flange of the nut that contacts the. 7. From outside, push the stem of the stuffing tube through the and fasten it with the flanged nut (or nut and washer) (see Figure 5). Fiberglass Tighten the flange nut securely. Aluminum Use spacers to isolate the stainless steel stuffing tube from the. Be sure to apply marine sealant to the spacers. Wood Hull If the boat has been out of the water for a prolonged period, hand-tighten the flange nut. Wood will swell after the boat is in the water and exert considerable pressure on the stuffing tube hardware. After the has expanded, tighten the nut securely. Installing a Welded Steel Stuffing Tube An Airmar steel stuffing tube can be installed with or without welded conduit. Some approval authorities require that the be encased in conduit. In such an installation, the conduit is welded to the steel stuffing tube (see Figure 7). In welded conduit installations the stuffing tube must have the tightened from outside the. Airmar stuffing tubes are reversible allowing the to be mounted outside or inside the. 1. At the selected mounting location, inspect the interior to ensure that there is clearance for the stuffing tube and threaded rods. Be sure no s, ribs, or struts will interfere. Mark the site for the stuffing tube on the outside of the. WARNING: A Fire Watch Must Be Stationed Inside the Hull. 2. At the marked location, drill or cut (with a cutting torch) a 38mm (1-1/2") diameter hole. Warning: The must be installed parallel to the keel to ensure proper boat handling and water flow over the. 3. Locate the holes for the threaded rods by positioning the Airmar at the selected location (see Figure 8). 4. Grind the area around the holes, inside and outside, removing all burrs. Clean the area around the holes to ensure that the marine sealant will adhere properly. Remove any petroleum residue. 5. Remove the, washers, and compression bushing from the stuffing tube. Be sure the compression bushing fits securely into the machined lip of the tube. Tighten the. Remove all excess sealant inside the. In-Hull Mount (Fiberglass only) In- mounting can be used in fiberglass s to minimize drag when the top speed of the boat is more than 25kn (29MPH). Although this placement results in a sound loss of 50% or more, these powerful s more than compensate. Also, in- mounting creates less turbulence, so the s performance can improve above 20kn (23 MPH). Locate the where the is solid fiberglass to maximize sound transmission. Do not locate over balsa wood or foam core material as these are poor sound conductors. Consult the manufacturer if you are unsure of the best location. Never bond the directly to the. Always use a liquid-filled box. 1. Position the at the selected location and test it with the echosounder before proceeding. Use one of the test methods below. Lay the against the and flood the area to cover the acoustic window. Grind the interior test surface smooth and wet it generously. Put the in a plastic bag and fill it with water. Place the bag containing the on the test surface. 2. Construct a tank using the as the bottom. Design it with a removable lid that is parallel to the waterline (see Figure 11). 3. At the selected location, grind the inside surface smooth and fiberglass the tank in place. 4. On the lid, mark the location of the holes for the two threaded rods used to mount the. The distance is equal to dimension A (see Figure 9). Locate the exit hole about half way between the threaded rods. Locate a fill hole between the and the wall of the tank (see Figure 11). Drill two 10mm (13/32") diameter holes for the threaded rods and drill the remaining two holes. 5. Attach the to the underside of the removable lid. Apply a 2mm (1/16") thick layer of marine sealant to the surface of the that will make contact with the lid. Thread the through the center hole in the lid. Apply a 2mm (1/16") thick layer of marine sealant to each threaded rod end. Secure each rod with a nut. The rods should extend a minimum of 3 threads beyond the nut. Slide a stainless steel washer and rubbery washer onto each rod. Push the threaded rods through the and lid. Apply a 2mm (1/16") thick layer of marine sealant to the rods near the lid. Secure the assembly in place with stainless steel washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts with a torque wrench using a force not exceeding 12 N-m (10 ft.-lb.). 6. Apply a 2mm (1/16") thick layer of marine sealant to the lip of the box. Fasten the lid to the tank with stainless steel nuts and washers. Apply marine sealant to the space around the. Be sure the seal on the tank is liquid-tight. 7. Fill the tank with mineral oil to about 25mm (1") of the top. Plug the fill hole. Mineral oil is available at most pharmacies. Installing the M172 M172 Tank Mount The M172 can be tank mounted. It is recommended that the clamp bar be shortened and re-drilled to accommodate two bolts. They will secure the to threaded stand-offs that are welded to the floor of the tank (see Figure 12). tank nut (2) clamp bar (shortened) screw (2) plate bolt (4) Figure 12. M172 tank mount 5

Insert the into the housing and place the clamp bar on top. Slide the threaded rods up through the housing and clamp bar. Secure the assembly in place with a stainless steel washer and nut. Tighten the nuts with a torque wrench using a force not exceeding 12 N-m (10 ft.-lb.). 3. Slide the onto the threaded rods. Position it against the assembly. Caution: Never pull, carry, or hold the by its as this may sever internal connections. 4. Thread the through the stuffing tube to the inside of the. Allow a service loop in the cavity of the so there is no tension applied to the (see Figure 5). 5. Apply a 2mm (1/16") thick layer of marine sealant to the surface of the that will contact the. 6. Place the entire assembly against the, pushing the rods through the. With a person stationed inside the vessel, position the on the rods. Secure each rod with a stainless steel washer and nut (see Figure 13). Tighten the nuts with a torque wrench using a force not exceeding 7 N-m (5 ft.-lb.). 7. Plug the mounting holes to minimize turbulence on the surface of the.cut the foam plugs to length so that, each plug will be recessed 5mm (3/16") below the surface of the housing. Push the foam plugs into the holes. Use marine sealant to fill each recess flush with the s surface. 8. Remove excess marine sealant on the outside of the and to ensure smooth water flow over the. 9. Seal the by sliding the washer, compression bushing, washer, and the along the to the stuffing tube (see Figure 10). Be sure the compression bushing fits securely into the machined lip of the tube. Tighten the. Cable Routing and Connecting marine sealant Route the to the echosounder being careful not to tear the jacket when passing it through the bulkhead and other parts of the boat. To reduce electrical interference separate the from other electrical wiring and the engine.coil any excess and secure it in place with zip-ties to prevent damage. Refer to your echosounder owners manual to connect the to the instrument. Figure 13. M172 installation in resin housing Checking for Leaks Warning: Never install a and leave the boat in the water unchecked for several days. When the boat is placed in the water, immediately check around the bolts that fasten the to the and the stuffing tube for leaks. Note that very small leaks may not be readily observed. It is best not to leave the boat in the water unattended for more than 3 hours before checking it again. If there is a small leak, there may be considerable bilge water accumulation after 24 hours. If a leak is observed, repeat the installation and sealing procedures immediately. Maintenance and Replacement Cleaning Aquatic growth can accumulate rapidly on the s surface reducing its performance within weeks. Clean the surface with a soft cloth and mild household detergent. If necessary, use a stiff brush or putty knife to remove the growth taking care to avoid making scratches. If fouling is severe, wet sand with #220 or finer grade wet/dry paper. Antifouling Paint Surfaces exposed to salt water must be coated with antifouling paint. Use only water-based paint. Never use ketone-based paint since ketones can attack many types of plastic possibly damaging the.
