1 Service Bulletin Applies To: 2008 Civic Sedan and Coupe ALL except GX and Hybrid February 29, Civic Sedan, Coupe: PDI and New Model Information (Supersedes , dated October 12, 2007, to update the information marked by the black bar) This service bulletin gives you the information needed for the PDI of the 2008 Civic Sedan (4-door) and Coupe (2-door). It also describes some of the vehicle s new features, equipment, and service information. NOTE: To do a PDI on a vehicle with a navigation system, be sure to complete Service Bulletin , Civic: PDI of the DVD Navigation System With Voice Recognition. The information in this service bulletin is considered part of the PDI. PDI PROCEDURES NOTE: Make sure you also complete the PDI checklist in the front section of the 2008 Honda Service History booklet. The PDI procedure is not finished until this bulletin and the PDI checklist are both completed. Working With a Flat Lift A flat lift may interfere with the side-spoiler. Use attachments that eliminate the chance of damage to the spoiler. Install Fuses To install the fuses: 1. Make sure the ignition is in the LOCK (0) position. 2. To determine whether this information applies, contact an authorized Honda automobile dealer.

2 Check the Battery To ensure long life of the battery and that the customer receives a fully charged battery, the battery should be checked in the following instances: when the vehicle first arrives at the dealership, during PDI (if done at a later time), during regular intervals, and just before delivering the vehicle to the customer. Test the battery with the ED-18 battery tester using the instructions in Service Bulletin , Battery Testing and Replacement. Do not use the battery s test indicator window to check its state of charge. If the ED- 18 tester does not show GOOD BATTERY, charge the battery (refer to Service Bulletin , Battery Maintenance at Dealers), then recheck it. Write down the GOOD BATTERY 10-digit code in the Honda Service History booklet: During the PDI, write down the code in the Under Hood (Engine Cold) section, and then when the vehicle is delivered to the customer, write down the code in the Final Inspection (At Delivery) section. Fueling the Vehicle Install the 7.5 A (No. 22) and 10 A (No. 23) fuses before filling up the fuel tank. If you do not install the fuses, the fuel gauge will take much longer than normal to display an accurate reading. If you filled the tank prior to installing these fuses, but you don t want to wait for the gauge to display the level, let the vehicle sit for 10 minutes with the ignition switch in the LOCK (0) position with the fuses removed. Do the Idle Learn Procedure To ensure a steady engine idle, do the idle learn procedure after installing the 10 A Backup (No. 23) fuse. NOTE: Idle speed adjustment is done by the ECM/ PCM; there is no adjustment screw. Idle learn must be done whenever you reset, update, or replace the ECM/ PCM. It does not need to be done after you erase DTCs with the HDS. 1. Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off. 2. Start the engine, and let it reach normal operating temperature (cooling fans cycle twice). 3. Let the engine idle for 10 minutes with the throttle closed. Set the Radio and the Clock (Models Without Navi) Do this after installing the fuses: 1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and turn on the radio. 2. If not already done, enter the audio anti-theft code. NOTE: Two code stickers and a plastic code card are located in a small plastic bag in the glove box. Attach one of the stickers to the code card, put it in the plastic bag, and return it to the glove box. Attach the other sticker to the PDI repair order, or put it in the plastic bag, and return it to the glove box. Never attach a sticker to the side of the glove box or other location where both the serial number and the code are easily visible. This defeats the purpose of the anti-theft protection. If the card is lost, the audio serial number can easily be obtained without removing the audio unit. To get the code, do this: Turn off the audio unit. Hold the 1 and 6 preset buttons at the same time, then turn on the audio unit. The 8-digit serial number is displayed in the audio display. Go to the in workstation, and access the audio Anti-theft code inquiry option. Use the serial number to look up the 5-digit audio anti-theft code. If the code does not work, call the Warranty department at (310) Enter a local AM or FM station on all the radio preset bars. To enter a station, press and hold the left or right side of the preset bar until you hear a beep. 4. Press and hold the CLOCK button on the audio panel until you hear a beep and the clock flashes. 5. Press and hold the H (preset 1) side of the 1-2 preset bar to set the hour. 6. Press and hold the M (preset 2) side of the 1-2 preset bar to set the minute. 7. Once the desired time is displayed, press and release the CLOCK button to enter the time. 2 of

3 Install the Shift Lock Release Cover The shift lock release is located next to the automatic transmission shifter. For vehicle operation during shipment, the shift lock release cover is removed and stored in the glove box. Remove the cover from the PDI bag located in the glove box, and install it in the slot. SHIFT LOCK RELEASE COVER Remove the Interior Protective Coverings There are several protective covers on interior trim pieces and some areas of the carpet. Carefully remove all of them. Remove the Exterior Protective Coverings Carefully remove all exterior protective coverings. Refer to Service Bulletin , Removal of Protective Coatings During PDI. Do not remove the rear door tape. Make Sure the TPMS Sensors Are Operational, and Set the Tire Pressures NOTE: If this procedure is not done during the PDI, the TPMS indicator will come on after about 20 miles. When the TPMS indicator comes on, the TPMS control unit also sets one or more of these TPMS DTCs: 32, 34, 36, 38, and/or 41. The repair of any of these DTCs, at PDI or shortly after, is not warrantable. To make sure the TPMS sensors are operational and the tire pressures are set, do this: 1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). 2. Use a tire pressure gauge with a bleeder valve to quickly lower the pressure in one tire to 18 psi or less. NOTE: The tire pressure must be lowered by at least 3 psi within 15 seconds, or the TPMS sensor in the wheel will not be activated. To ensure accuracy, periodically check your tire pressure gauge with the calibration tool, P/N 07AAJ-000A100, H/C This tool was sent to all dealerships in August Adjust the tire pressure to the cold inflation pressure listed on the driver s doorjamb sticker. If you are in a cold climate region, make sure the tire is at the same temperature as the outside air before adjusting the pressure; otherwise, the TPMS low pressure indicator may show low tire pressure in cold weather. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other three tires. NOTE: The spare tire does not have a TPMS sensor. Make sure that the spare tire is inflated to the pressure listed on the doorjamb sticker. Install the Front License Plate Holder For shipping purposes, the license plate holder is stored in the trunk. The front license plate holder is installed as shown. FRONT LICENSE PLATE HOLDER BOLTS CLIPS (Install on the lower grille.) of 7

4 Install the Rear License Plate Protectors (Sedan) Two foam blocks for mounting the rear license plate are included with the mounting hardware for the front license plate holder. Mount these blocks to the indicated areas on the trunk lid. These blocks keep the license plate from rattling. Install the Rear Strakes (EX, EX-L, LX Sedan) if not Factory Installed The rear strakes may be factory installed on some vehicles. If they are not installed, use the four 6 mm bolts provided in the PDI kit to install the strakes to the front of each rear wheel arch. DIMPLES FORWARD FOAM BLOCKS REAR STRAKES 6 mm BOLTS NOTE: Four screws are used to mount the license plate on coupe models. Remove the Chin Spoiler Tape Protective tape is attached to the front chin spoiler to avoid damage during transportation. Remove the tape at PDI. Navigation System DVD Location/Installation (If Equipped) On navigation system equipped vehicles, the turquoise navigation system DVD is located in the glove box in a plastic jewel case either in the owner s manual packet or by itself. Refer to Service Bulletin , Civic: PDI of the DVD Navigation System with Voice Recognition, for information on DVD installation and additional navigation setup. NOTE: This DVD is unique to the 2008 Civic and will not work in any other vehicle. If your dealership s policy is to gather up owner s manual packets for safekeeping, make sure you leave this DVD for whomever is doing the navigation system PDI. In the unlikely event the DVD is missing, you can order it from the Honda Disc Fulfillment Center at (888) PROTECTIVE TAPE (Remove.) CHIN SPOILER 4 of

5 Check/Refresh the XM Satellite Radio Dealer Demo Service The XM Satellite Radio comes from the factory activated with the dealer demo service. Once you install the No. 23 fuse, the XM radio will receive the full range of available XM channels. Make sure this service is activated by checking if the radio is getting channels 000, 001, 007, 009, 047, 122, 174, and 247. If it is not, do a rapid refresh on the in. Without the dealer demo service activated, the XM radio only displays channels 000, 001, 174, and 247. To check for the dealer demo service, do this: 1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). 2. Turn on the radio, and enter the audio unit anti-theft code. Then press the CD/AUX XM button. 3. Make sure the radio is in CHANNEL MODE, not CATEGORY MODE. Press and hold the DISP- MODE button for 6 seconds (without navigation) or touch the MODE icon (with navigation) to switch between modes. 4. Tune to channel 001 (the XM preview channel) to make sure you are receiving the XM signal. If you do not get a clear signal, park the vehicle outside where there is a clear view of the southern sky. 5. Look at the audio unit display and turn the TUNE knob. If you can tune to channels 000, 001, 007, 009, 047, 122, 174, and 247, the dealer demo service is activated. Tune to channel 001 and leave the radio on for 7 minutes to refresh the dealer demo service. No further action is needed. If you can only tune to channels 000, 001, 174, and 247, the dealer demo service is not yet activated, and an activation refresh needs to be done. Go to step Turn the TUNE knob to 000, then write down the 8-digit XM radio ID number you see in the audio unit display. You need this number, your dealer number, and the VIN to do an activation refresh of the dealer demo service. Then go to step 7. NOTE: If you cannot tune to channel 000, you are in CATEGORY MODE. See step 3 above to switch from CATEGORY MODE to CHANNEL MODE. Check the ID code carefully. The letters I, O, S, and F are not used. 7. Go to an in workstation. NOTE: If you do not have access to the in, call XM Satellite Radio at (800) , and follow the instructions of the automated menu. When the agent answers, ask for a rapid dealer activation refresh, then go to step From the in main menu, click on SERVICE, click on Service Bay, and then click on XM Radio. This brings up the DEALER ACTIVATION REFRESH screen. NOTE: If you cannot bring up this display, call the in Support Center at (800) Enter the 8-digit XM Satellite Radio ID number you wrote down in step 6. Then click on Submit. You will see the ACTIVATION REFRESH screen once the ID number is recognized. NOTE: If you entered the ID number incorrectly, or it was not recognized, you will see an error display. If this happens, follow the instructions on the display. 10. Turn the TUNE knob to 001 to make sure you are receiving the XM signal. If you do not get a clear signal, park the vehicle outside where there is a clear view of the southern sky, then go to step Leave the radio on for at least 10 minutes, then go to step Look at the audio unit display, and turn the TUNE knob. If you can tune to channels 000, 001, 007, 009, 047, 122, 174, and 247, the dealer demo service is activated. No further action is needed. If you can only tune to channels 000, 001, 174, and 247, the dealer demo service is not yet activated. Repeat steps 9 and 10 for up to 2 hours until the dealer demo service is activated. If, after 2 hours, you can only tune to channels 000, 001, 174, and 247, repeat steps 7 thru 11. NOTE: The dealer demo service lasts for 7 months or until the vehicle s RDR (retail delivery registration) is submitted. After the vehicle is registered, the dealer demo service converts to a customer account. The customer gets a 3-month trial service of all available non-premium XM channels. If the customer decides to end the service after that time, the XM radio reverts to preview mode. Normal AM and FM radio reception is not affected by ending the service. The XM radio receives digital programming broadcasts from two fixed-orbit satellites near the equator along with a network of ground antennas (repeaters). You will get the strongest signal if you park the vehicle where there is a clear view of the southern sky. The XM radio may lose reception when you are driving through a tunnel, under an overpass, inside a parking garage, or near the northern face of a canyon or a mountain. To cut down on reception loss, the XM radio uses a buffer. If the reception loss lasts longer than the buffering period, the signal goes silent. Because the XM radio signal is digital, any reception loss makes the signal go silent; the signal usually does not fade like it does with a conventional radio of 7

6 If you ever need to replace the XM radio receiver, call XM Satellite Radio at (800) Be prepared to give them your dealer number, the VIN, and the XM radio ID numbers from the printed label on the side of the old and the new receiver units. Your customer s XM radio presets will be lost if you disconnect the 12-volt battery or if it goes dead. Always write down the XM radio presets before you disconnect the battery. 3. Install the four grommets in the four holes in the bottom of the bumper. Install the Mugen Front Under-Spoiler (Si Mugen) The 2008 Civic Si Mugen comes with a front underspoiler that needs to be installed at PDI. The spoiler is stored in the trunk/rear seat area. All hardware is included with the spoiler. The contents of the assembly are: Front under-spoiler (1) 5 x 16 mm Self-tapping screws (4) 6 x 16 mm Self-tapping screws (4) Clips (4) Grommets (4) 1 mm Spacers (4) 2 mm Spacers (4) GROMMETS 4. Test-fit the spoiler, and check its position to make sure that it is sitting flush on all sides. Mark the spoiler and the bumper in six places with a nonpermanent felt-tip pen. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the front underspoiler and the vehicle body. Have an assistant help with the installation. To install the spoiler, do this: 1. Raise the vehicle on a lift. 2. Thoroughly clean off any oil/grease from the shaded area shown below with isopropyl alcohol. SPOILER 5. Partially peel off about 50 mm of the backing from each of the sections of the double-sided adhesive tape attached to the spoiler. Fold the ends up diagonally, and tape the folded portions to the outside of the spoiler top. NOTE: Partially peeling off the tape backing makes it easier to fully remove the tape backing during final installation. 6 of

7 6. Loosely attach the front under-spoiler with the 6 x 16 mm self-tapping screws. NOTE: Do not fully tighten the screws. NEW MODEL INFORMATION NOTE: For more information on the topics in this section, refer to the Civic Service Manual and the appropriate 2008 Civic owner s manual. Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) Software HDS software is or later. XM Satellite Radio (XM Standard and XM Accessory) Here are the differences between XM-standard and XM-accessory vehicles: XM-standard vehicles come from the factory with the dealer demo service already activated. These vehicles get a 90-day trial service of all XM channels. The subscription fee is sold separately after this trial period expires. XM-accessory vehicles are pre-wired to accept the dealer-installed accessory radio hardware. 7. Make sure the supplied clips are installed. If there is a gap in the end(s) of the spoiler, insert spacers in the gap for a snug fit. Then loosely install the 5 x 15 mm self-tapping screws. NOTE: If not properly spaced, the upper corners of the spoiler could eventually stick out. CLIPS Trunk Lock Cylinder The trunk lock cylinder is only on models without a trunk opener on the keyless remote transmitter. TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) The 2008 Civic now comes with a TPMS that is similar to the 2007 Element. NOTE: The TPMS in the 2008 Civic does not have initiators that turn on the tire pressure sensors when the ignition switch is in the ON (II) position. After inflating the tire(s) to the proper pressure, the indicator will remain on until the vehicle is driven at a speed more than 25 mph (40 km/h). SPACERS 8. Let the spoiler rest on the loose screws. Peel off the backing of the double-sided adhesive tapes, line up the reference marks, and press the spoiler firmly to the bumper. 9. Fully tighten the screws, and check that the spoiler is sitting flush on all sides of 7
