1 Bulletin 00--ABDE Service Bulletin (This bulletin and all other active bulletins are downloadable from our website at Bulletin 00--ABDE Page of + Worksheets Date: 0//00 SUBJECT: Troubleshooting Intermittent Alarms on H50 and H5 Series Fryers This bulletin cancels and replaces Service Bulletin ABD Remove bulletin ABD from your active files. This procedure is designed to minimize the expense, number of service calls, and irritation that occurs when ignition failure, help, or trouble light alarms are reported by the customer but cannot be duplicated by the technician. Introduction The H50 and H5 Series gas fryers have been in production since 98. Consequently, there are differences between fryers, depending upon when they were manufactured. The differences affecting intermittent alarm troubleshooting are detailed below. Technicians will encounter three different types of interface boards: J SOUND J J J SOUND J V This Fuse is NOT present on IFB D6 F Ignition AMP Module D7 AIR J VD AD AS VS K K4 K K GV AL V AIR 4V AL GV EARLIER DESIGN INTERFACE BOARD P/N K5 VD ALR VS VD AD AS VS D D GV AND K K K4 Blower Motor Amp D 4V AND D4 K D5 GV VD ALR VS LATER DESIGN INTERFACE BOARDS P/N and Frymaster L.L.C., 8700 Line Avenue, P.O. 2 Bulletin 00--ABDE Page of In the earlier design interface board (used between June 996 and July 999), the diagnostic s are arrayed in a row across the bottom of the board as shown in the lefthand illustration on the preceding page. In later design interface boards, and in the interface boards that replaced them in current production units, the s (labeled D though D7) are scattered around the board as shown in the right-hand illustration. The primary difference between the earlier design boards and the later design boards is the combining of the separate blower motor relay (K4) and the heat relays (K and K) into a pair of replaceable relays (K and K) in the latter. Also, the interface board has an additional fuse located in the upper right hand corner. Prior to June 996, a board with replaceable relays very similar in appearance to the board was used. It is distinguished from the board by the absence of fuses. H50/H5 Series fryers will also differ in the type and number of ignition modules used in their construction. Technicians will encounter three different ignition modules, as illustrated below. Fuse Note absence of fuse on left side of module. Note second set of terminals on left side of full vat module. Standard Honeywell 4-Second Module New Honeywell 4-Second Dual Vat Module New Honeywell 4-Second Full Vat Module Full vat fryers may have only one ignition module or they may have two ignition modules. Dual vat fryers may have two or two ignition modules. As a general rule, fryers having the or modules will have a interface board. However, some fryers with these modules may have the board. Similarly, fryers having ignition modules will usually be equipped with an interface board, but they could also have the board. Troubleshooting each configuration is slightly different, and the troubleshooting procedure for each is detailed separately as indicated below. 5 Bulletin 00--ABDE Page 5 of Before beginning the actual troubleshooting procedures, do the following: Get as much information as possible from the customer when the request for service is received. Let intermittent help, ignition failure or trouble light be the key words that alert you to get additional information. Ask the questions below. If the person calling has little or no information, ask who knows about the failures. If necessary, call back to talk with that person.. When does the problem occur (when fryer is first turned on, after filtration, during heavy usage, etc.)?. Will the fryer operate despite the alarm? If yes, this suggests a faulty alarm circuit.. Will the fryer operate if you turn it off and start it again immediately? If yes, this eliminates the hi-limit as the cause. 4. Will the fryer consistently restart only if you turn it off, wait 0 minutes and start it again? If yes, this suggests the hi-limit is opening. 5. Get the fryer history. What parts were changed and when? 6. How frequently does the problem occur (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly)? If the problem occurs several times per day, schedule a service call. If the problem does not occur several times per day suggest to the customer that you fax or mail them the appropriate Intermittent Alarm Problem Isolation Worksheet found after Page of this bulletin. The customer isolation procedure accomplishes two things: It lets the customer know that this is difficult to troubleshoot and it isolates the problem to one side of the fryer. Explain that it is expensive and non-productive to have a technician standing around waiting for a failure, but let the customer decide! When a technician goes to the restaurant, a two-step approach should be followed:. Duplicate the problem.. Isolate the cause of the problem and correct it. If you can't duplicate the trouble, make adjustments to the air, gas, and electrical systems to optimize fryer operation in accordance with the procedure on the following page. Frymaster L.L.C., 8700 Line Avenue, P.O. Box 5000, Shreveport, LA Shipping Address: 8700 Line Avenue, Shreveport, LA ZIP 706 TEL FAX Hour SERVICE HOTLINE
6 Bulletin 00--ABDE Page 6 of OPTIMIZING FRYER PERFORMANCE NOTE: This procedure applies to both full- and dual-vat fryers. If the trouble could not be duplicated, optimize fryer operation per the following procedures:. Measure the gas pressure and adjust as required. Turn everything on and look for pressure drops. Do not proceed until the gas pressure is correct and steady.. Check airflow for the following: a. Clogged or dirty blower wheel. b. Blower motor is slow to come up to speed. c. Plenum gaskets incorrectly installed (use inspection mirror). d. Blower shutters improperly adjusted. e. Flue restrictors in place (they should be removed). f. Negative air in the restaurant. To test, slightly open a door or window. If air comes in, there is a negative air balance. Velocity of air is an indication of how negative. g. Measure hood air flow (CFM). Too much or too little airflow can cause an alarm. h. Connect a DC microammeter in series with each flame sensor and monitor the flame current. Adjust the blower air adjustment plate for an orange/red glow on the burners. If the microamps are low or drop off as the fryer heats up, adjust the position of the ignitor and flame sensor for maximum steady microamps (.5 µa to.5 µa).. Look for signs of overheating such as: a. Discolored or melted ignition modules. b. Interface board darkened and discolored. c. Front of fryer feels hot. NOTE: Controllers are more sensitive to high temperature than computers. If there is evidence of overheating: Attempt to cause an alarm by pressing on the interface board with a pencil. Examine the connector on the back of the interface board for signs of loose pins or poor connections. Frymaster L.L.C., 8700 Line Avenue, P.O. Box 5000, Shreveport, LA Shipping Address: 8700 Line Avenue, Shreveport, LA ZIP 706 TEL FAX Hour SERVICE HOTLINE
7 Bulletin 00--ABDE Page 7 of NOTE: Overheating causes include: Dirty or blocked openings in the back of the fryer (McDonald's). Low hood air draw. Negative air balance. Missing standoff (McDonald's). Damaged burner seals. 4. Check the flame sensor wire connections for loose terminals or loose connections. 5. Inspect the ignition cables for cracks, cuts, or insulation breakdown. 6. On units with replaceable relays, examine the contacts on the heat relay. If there is evidence of damage, replace the relay. PROCEDURE FOR SECOND SERVICE CALL (IF NECESSARY) If available, substitute the complete control box from another frypot known to be working properly for the one on the problem frypot. Ask the customer to use both frypots and let you know if the trouble stayed with the original frypot or followed the control box. PROCEDURE FOR THIRD SERVICE CALL (IF NECESSARY) Swapping control boxes should isolate the problem. If not, arrange a time with the customer to perform the Full Usage Stress Test detailed below on the fryer. Ask the customer to empty the vat prior to your arrival.. Connect a gas pressure gauge (do not use a water column manometer because it reacts too slowly) to monitor the gas pressure.. Connect a DC microampmeter to measure the flame sensor current.. Connect an AC voltmeter across the coil of the gas valve to monitor coil voltage. 4. Fill the vat with clean water, turn on the fryer, program for a temperature above F, (00 C) and start the fryer. 5. Monitor gas pressure, flame sensor current, and voltage to gas valve. If the microamps decrease during heavy usage, this indicates the flame sensors are not correctly located, or blower air is incorrectly adjusted. If the gas pressure drops (with 4 volts applied), the gas valve is defective. If the proper microamps are present, and the 4 volts drop out, the hi-limit, one of the ignition modules, the 4-volt transformer, or the wiring between these four components is defective. 8 Bulletin 00--ABDE Page 8 of 6. If the fryer has operated for an hour and the problem has not occurred, turn the fryer off and immediately turn it back on. If there is no gas pressure with 4 volts applied, the gas valve is defective. IF AT ANYTIME DURING THESE PROCEDURES YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT THE PROCEDURE OR THE RESULTS, CALL FRYMASTER TECHNICAL SERVICE AT Frymaster L.L.C., 8700 Line Avenue, P.O. 9 Bulletin 00--ABDE Page 9 of Procedure for Troubleshooting Full Vat Fryers with One Ignition Module If the fryer operates despite the alarm, this suggests a faulty alarm circuit (i.e., failed interface board). If the fryer restarts immediately after turning it off and then back on, the high limit is okay. If the fryer will consistently restart only after allowing it to cool for 0 minutes, this suggests the problem is an open high limit.. Open the control panel. Find s, 4 and 5 on the interface board. Close the control panel, but do not replace the screws at this time.. Use the fryer as needed to fry food. When an alarm occurs, drop the control panel down. Turn the fryer off. Wait five seconds, then turn the fryer on.. Observe the behavior of s (4V Transformer), 4 (Heat Relay) and 5 (Gas Valve). If did not light, the interface board is not getting power from the transformer or the interface board itself has failed. If lit, but 4 did not, and the fryer has a interface board or an interface board with combined heat and blower relays, turn the fryer off and substitute a relay known to be good for relay K, then turn the fryer on. If 4 lights, the computer is calling for heat and the replacement relay is functioning properly. If 4 still does not light, turn the fryer off and substitute a computer or controller known to be good, then turn the fryer on. If 4 lights, the problem is with the computer or controller. If 4 still does not light, the problem is most likely a failed interface board or a break in the wiring between the computer and the interface board. If lit, but 4 did not, and the fryer has an interface board with separate heat and blower relays, turn the fryer off and substitute a computer or controller known to be good, then turn the fryer on. If 4 lights, the problem is with the computer or controller. If 4 still does not light, the problem is most likely a failed interface board or a break in the wiring between the computer and the interface board. If 4 lit and 5 did not, turn off the fryer and check the fuse in the upper right corner of the interface board. NOTE: In some cases where an interface board is used with an module, check the inline fuse between the interface board and the module. If the fuse is good, the probable cause is an intermittently failing ignition module. If the fuse is blown, replace the fuse and repeat from Step. If the fuse blows again, the problem is most likely with the high-limit, the drain safety switch, or the gas valve. If the fryer restarts immediately after turning it off and then back on, the high limit is okay. Therefore, the problem is most likely with the drain safety switch or the gas valve. If 4 and 5 lit, then 5 went out after the burners lit briefly, the problem is most likely with the flame sensor. Frymaster L.L.C., 8700 Line Avenue, P.O. 10 Bulletin 00--ABDE Page 0 of Procedure for Troubleshooting Full Vat Fryers with Two Ignition Modules If the fryer operates despite the alarm, this suggests a faulty alarm circuit (i.e., failed interface board). If the fryer restarts immediately after turning it off and then back on, the high limit is okay. If the fryer will consistently restart only after allowing it to cool for 0 minutes, this suggests the problem is an open high limit.. Open the control panel and find s,, 4, and 5 on the interface board. Close the control panel, but do not replace the screws at this time.. Use the fryer as needed to fry food. When an alarm occurs, drop the control panel down. Turn the fryer off. Wait five seconds, then turn the fryer on.. Observe the behavior of s (Heat Relay), (4 Volt Transformer), 4 (Heat Relay), and 5 (Gas Valve). If 4 lit and did not, since the fryer works sometimes but not others, the problem is probably the right module failing intermittently. Replace the right module. If s 4,, and 5 light, then s and 5 go out simultaneously, the right module is locking out first. If s 4,, and 5 light, then 5 goes out, followed four seconds later by, the left module is locking out first. To isolate the cause of the lockout, switch the flame sensor wires at the ignitors and restart the fryer. If the modules lock out in the opposite order, the problem is with the flame, or the flame sensor. If the modules lock out in the same order, the problem is with the module or flame sensor wire. If the burners did not light at all, the problem is most likely with the high-limit switch, drain safety switch, or the gas valve. If the fryer restarts immediately after turning it off and then back on, the high limit is okay, therefore the problem is with the drain safety switch or the gas valve. 11 Bulletin 00--ABDE Page of Procedure for Troubleshooting Dual Vat Fryers When troubleshooting dual vat fryers, each side of the fryer must be checked separately. The s for the left vat are and ; those for the right vat are 4 and 5. If the fryer operates despite the alarm, this suggests a faulty alarm circuit (i.e., failed interface board). If the fryer restarts immediately after turning it off and then back on, the high limit is okay. If the fryer will consistently restart only after allowing it to cool for 0 minutes, this suggests the problem is an open high limit.. Open the control panel and find s (Left Gas Valve), (Left Heat Relay), 4 (Right Heat Relay), and 5 (Gas Valve) on the interface board.. Use the fryer as needed to fry food.. When an alarm occurs, drop the control panel down. Turn the fryer off. Wait five seconds, then turn the fryer on. Look through both burner viewports. If one side does not light at all, that is the defective side. Check the following components on that side: ignitor, ignition cable, and ignition module. If the left side locks out after attempting to light (indicated by going out), the problem is with the flame sensing on the left burner or with the left ignition module. If the right side locks out after attempting to light (indicated by 5 going out), the problem is with the flame sensing on the right burner or with the right ignition module.
