2 Prerequisites, Continued Figure 3 shows acceptable mounting positions for NEMA 2. d NEMA 2 ALIGNMENT MARK ON BOTH SIDES b a EA0765R1 < 90 < PL0039R1 Figure 3. Acceptable NEMA 2 Positions. Installation To ensure proper operation, use only designated mounting hardware and install as described. Figure 4. Inserting the Shaft Adapter. 5. Set the damper blades in the "0" position. 6. Finger tighten the middle screw of the shaft adapter keeping the shaft in the center of the shaft adapter. See Figure 6. EA0747R1 Page 2 of 7 CLOCKWISE COUNTER CLOCKWISE The hand-arrow symbol on the center of the actuator shows the rotation of the actuator as it moves from "0' to "90". The clockwise or counterclockwise rotation allows the setting of normally open or normally closed damper blade action. The actuator rotates clockwise or counterclockwise depending on the side of the actuator facing you. Mounting the slave actuator 1. Turn the slave actuator so that the arrow matches the direction of rotation of the damper blades. NOTE: The following steps show normally closed, clockwise-to-open action. NOTE: The shaft adapter can be mounted from either the front or the back of the actuator. 2. Place the shaft adapter (b) into the actuator placing the shaft adapter right next to the alignment mark keeping the mark visible. See Figure Secure the shaft adapter with the locking clip (d). 4. Place the actuator on the damper shaft. EA0703R1 DAMPER SHAFT Figure 5. Centering the Shaft Adapter. 7. Finger tighten the two outside bolts of the shaft adapter. 8. Slip the mounting (anti-rotation) bracket (f), shipped with the master actuator, into the slot at the base of the actuator housing. NOTE: HALFWAY -)%$'4 Figure 6. Position of the Bracket Button. The button of the bracket should fit about half way into the slot in the base of the actuator housing. 9. Mark, using the bracket as a template, and drill two holes in the side of the damper. Mounting the Slave Actuator. 11. If using conduit, attach it to the slave actuator. Mounting the master actuator 1. Turn the master actuator in the same orientation as the slave actuator. NOTE: The shaft adapter can be mounted from either the front or the back of the actuator. The length of the damper shaft determines the placement. 2. Place the shaft adapter (b) into the actuator in the same position as the slave actuator and secure with the locking clip (d). 3. Place the position indicator adapter (e) onto the shaft adapter. See Figure Place the position indicator (c) on the adapter with the pointer at the "0" position on the scale on the actuator. See Figure Place the actuator onto the damper shaft. Keep the actuators parallel, making sure that there is adequate space between them to avoid contact. Figure 8. Attaching the Position Indicator. 6. Finger tighten the middle screw of the shaft adapter keeping the shaft in the center of the shaft adapter. See Figure Finger tighten the two outside bolts of the shaft adapter. 8. Slip the ASK73.1 tandem mounting bracket (j) into the slot at the base of the actuator housing. See Figure 6 for the correct positioning of the bracket button. 9. 4 Installation, Continued 11. Using a 10 mm socket wrench, tighten the shaft adapter of both actuators to the damper shaft using no more than 88 lb-in (10 Nm) torque. See Figure 10. Manual Override Setting manual override NOTE: Remove the master actuator and perform the following steps on the slave actuator. NOTE: Always turn the key in the direction of the arrow. 10 mm HEX SOCKET 88 lb - in (10Nm) TORQUE PUSH GEAR TRAIN LOCK PIN x 7-3/4 = mm h GEAR TRAIN LOCK PIN 3 HOLD 5 PL0043R1 EA0772R1 4 Figure 10. Securing the Actuators. Figure 11. Manual Override. 1. Insert the 3 mm hex key in the override opening. 2. Turn the key in the direction of the arrow on the hand symbol until you reach the desired degree of opening. 3. Hold the key in place. 4. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver into the gear train lock pin. Turn the screwdriver in the same direction as the arrow until you hear a click or meet slight resistance. When you lock the gear train lock pin, be careful to turn only about 5 degrees until you hear a click or meet slight resistance. Turning too far will strip the lock pin. 5. Remove the key or keep it in place. Page 4 of 7
5 Manual Override, Continued Releasing manual override EA0773R1 GEAR TRAIN LOCK PIN Figure 12. Resetting to "0" Position. 1. Insert the 3 mm hex key in the override opening. 2. Turn the key in the direction of the arrow only a short distance. 3. Remove the key. The actuator will return to the "0" position. Remounting and installing after manual override 1. Remove the slave actuator from the damper shaft. NOTE: To remove the slave, it may be necessary to remove one screw of each mounting bracket and swing the brackets out of the way. 2. Remove the shaft adapters from both actuators. 3. Perform the steps of Releasing manual override on each actuator to ensure they have no preload. 4. To set a preload, do the following on each actuator. a. Place the shaft adapter as close to the end stop as possible. b. With the hex key inserted in the manual override opening, turn the key about 180 degrees or until the alignment mark is seen. c. Hold the key and lock the gear train lock pin. 5. Follow the instructions for Mounting the Slave Actuator and Mounting the Master Actuator using the steps that apply. Wiring All wiring must conform to NEC and local codes and regulations. Use earth ground isolating step-down Class 2 transformers. Do not use auto transformers. The maximum rating for a Class 2 step-down transformer is 100 VA. An 80% safety factor is recommended for the sum of all actuator VAs. Operating more actuators requires additional transformers or separate 100 VA power trunks. The actuator housing of both the master and the slave must be grounded for proper operation. Master/Slave Application Use the same 24 Vac power supply for both the master and the slave. Connect the 2 (black) wire of the master and the 2 (black) wire of the slave together and then connect them to the power supply. Connect the 1 (red) wire of the master and the 1 (red) wire of the slave together and then connect them to the power supply. Connect the MS1 wire from the master to the MS1 wire of the slave, and connect the MS2 wire from the master to the MS2 wire of the slave. Extending the wire lengths between the master and slave is not recommended. Never connect MS1 to MS2 or MS2 to MS1. Master Stand-alone Application If the master actuator is ever used in a stand-alone application, the MS1 and MS2 wires must be separately covered with the two wire nuts (i) provided. Page 5 of 7
6 Wiring Designations The MS1 or MS2 wires have a plastic shrink tube for their identification. The other wires have the symbol printed on them. See Table 1.
