2 Tools Required standard screwdriver (6 inch shank with 5/16 inch blade) open end wrench, adjustable to 1 inch drill bit (3/16 inch, 4.8 mm, No. 9 or 10) and drill hammer nut driver, 5/16 inch Description The M Damper Mount Linkage Kit provides remote inside duct mounting for M9000 actuators. The damper mount linkage kit must be used on a 3-blade or larger Johnson Controls damper. The nominal spring return torque is 100 lbxin at the damper pin. Mounting Brackets for M9100 and M9200 Actuators CCW -Open Rotation Figure 1: Three Blade Damper with CCW-Open Rotation The following installation procedure is for a 3-blade, parallel blade operation, right hand (CCW) Counterclockwise-open damper as shown in Figure 1. IMPORTANT: Damper mount linkage kit must be used on a 3-blade or larger Johnson Controls damper. Installing the Universal Mounting Bracket Screws Figure 2: Securing Universal Mounting Bracket 1. The universal mounting bracket must be mounted on the linkage side of the damper and one position lower than the blade to be driven. To determine the drive blade, proceed as follows: one blade in a multi-blade damper is always designated as the preferred drive blade. On dampers with less than five blades, the first blade is the preferred drive blade with the third and fifth blades as alternates. On larger dampers the third blade will be the preferred drive blade with the first, fifth, seventh, etc. as alternates. (Example: A 3-blade damper/universal mounting bracket would be mounted in the center blade position and the actuator would drive the top blade.) 2. Secure the bracket to the end channel by using two No x 1/2 inch (13 mm) hex-head, thread-forming screws as shown in Figure 2. Installing the Reinforcement Link Install the reinforcement link to the universal mounting bracket as follows: Note: For right hand CCW-open dampers, position the link above the blade centerline. For right hand (CW) Clockwise-open dampers, position the link below the blade centerline. 1. Install a No tapping screw through the link into the universal mounting bracket hole closest to the blades in the damper as shown in Figure 3. 2 M Damper Mount Linkage Kit Installation Bulletin

3 2. On dampers made before February 29, 1996, the drill points in the end channels locating where the holes are to be drilled for the reinforcement link are to be disregarded. Line up the new link and drill a 17/64 inch hole according to the dimensions shown in Figure On dampers made after March 1, 1996, line up the reinforcement link as shown in Figure 3 and drill a 17/64 inch hole using the drill point in the end channel that lines up best with the hole in the link. 4. After the 17/64 inch hole has been drilled, insert the drive rivet through the hole in the link and end channel. With the link touching the end channel, strike the rivet with a hammer to secure the link to the damper. 11/16 Damper End Channel 13/16 5/8 New Rivet Dia. 1/4 inch x 23/64 inch Long Drill a 17/64 inch Hole to Install Drive Rivet Tapping Screw No x 1/2 inch Long Universal Actuator Mounting Bracket New Reinforcement Link New Link Uses Holes on this End Tapping Screw No x 1/2 inch Long Figure 3: Installing Reinforcement Link to Universal Mounting Bracket Installing the Reinforcement Plate With the large hole orientated at the top, install the plate to the universal mounting bracket using four No x 1/2 inch (13 mm) hex-head, threadforming screws as shown in Figure 4. Figure 4: Installing Reinforcement Plate M 9200 Actuator Installation The following instructions are for repositioning the actuator coupler and sleeve for kit application. This kit is designed such that the M9200 actuator coupler is set up for 45 total rotation between end stops for 90 total rotation at the damper blade. IMPORTANT: The actuator end stops (internal or external) must be used to limit rotation, and not the damper blade, or damage to the damper may result. The following instructions are for a 3-blade, parallel blade operation, right hand open damper, clockwise return-to-normal application. The return-to-normal rotation direction is factory set to rotate in a Counterclockwise (CCW) direction. To change the return-to-normal rotation direction first remove the coupler and the sleeve: 1. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the locking clip from the backside of the actuator. 2. Remove the coupler from the front of the actuator, and slide the sleeve off the coupler. (See Figure 5.) 4 Mounting the Crank Arm and Ball Joint to the Actuator Coupler Remove the crank arm and shaft clamp plug from the M kit. 1. Loosen and remove the two clamp nuts and washers. 2. Assemble the crank arm over the threaded ends of the U bolt onto the coupler with the slotted side closest to the actuator as shown in Figure Reassemble the two washers and nuts to the U bolt clamp, and just start the nuts on the threaded ends approximately one turn. 4. Insert the shaft clamp plug into the coupler with the groove aligned with the V-shaped portion of the U bolt and the outside diameters contacting the two serrated edges (front and back) of the coupler. Tighten the two U bolt nuts securing the crank arm to the coupler. 5. Assemble the ball joint at the top of the slot in the crank arm with the swivel portion facing towards the actuator. Secure in position by tightening the nut. Repositioning the Actuator Coupler and Sleeve for Kit Application CW Return Direction Splines Sleeve Guides Back Figure 7: Setting CW Return Direction 1. To set the Clockwise (CW) return-to-normal direction, the sleeve must be reinserted into the back of the actuator with the splines furthest from the actuator. To achieve the 45 rotation between end stops, insert the sleeve at approximately the 22-1/2 position. 2. Using the guides on the back of the actuator, position the sleeve such that the wide gap of the sleeve teeth is centered on the top guide line as shown in Figure To reassemble the coupler to the actuator, align the tab on the bottom of the coupler with the wide gap of the sleeve teeth and insert the coupler into the actuator. 4. Replace the locking clip on the coupler securing it in position. Mounting the Anti-rotation Bracket to the Reinforcement Plate Figure 6: Mounting Crank Arm Figure 8: Mounting Anti-rotation Bracket Fasten the anti-rotation bracket to the reinforcement plate using two No x 1/2 inch hex-head, threadforming screws. Installing the Damper Blade Arm Linkage Blade Arm Attached to Driving Blade at Second Set of Knockouts Figure 10: Blade Arm Side View of Blade Arm Connection 1. Determine the location for mounting the blade arm on the damper blade. The correct location of the blade arm will result in the drive rod being parallel to the universal mounting bracket and perpendicular to the damper blade. (For the M9200 actuator this should be the second set of Tog-L-Loc knockouts.) 2. Remove the second set of knockouts and fasten the blade arm to the damper blade using two No x 1/2 inch hex-head, thread-forming screws as shown in Figure Assemble the connection head to the threaded end of the drive rod and tighten. Slide the drive rod through the ball joint opening but don t tighten. 4. Close the damper and position the connection head into the blade arm aligned with the top holes. Insert the connection head pin through the blade arm securing the connection head in place. Fasten the connection head clip to the pin as shown in Figure Make sure the damper is closed tightly and tighten the ball joint nut securing the drive rod. Figure 11: Rod Connection Head Setting the External Rotation Limiters 1. Wire the actuator according to the M9200 Series Electric Motor Spring Return Actuator Product/Technical Bulletin. 2. Make sure the two rotation limiters are in the full down position. If not, loosen the hex-head screws and position the limiters in the full down position. 3. Just before the damper reaches the full open position, remove the control signal stopping the actuator rotation. M Damper Mount Linkage Kit Installation Bulletin 5

6 4. Slide the CCW, left rotation limiter up to contact the coupler stop and tighten the two hex-head screws, securing the stop limiter in position. 5. Remove the supply voltage and the actuator should spring return, CW, to the damper full closed position. If the damper is not fully closed, apply a control signal to drive the actuator CCW slightly off the end stop, approximately 2 to 3. Loosen the ball joint nut on the drive rod and pull the rod tight closing the damper. Retighten the ball joint nut securing the rod in position. 6. Power the actuator driving the damper full open making sure the CCW rotation limiter stalls the actuator. 7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until the operation of the damper is acceptable. M9100 Actuator Installation The following instructions are for repositioning the actuator coupler for kit application. This kit is designed such that the M9100 actuator coupler is set up for 45 total rotation between end stops for 90 total rotation at the damper blade. IMPORTANT: The actuator end stops (internal or external) must be used to limit rotation, and not the damper blade, or damage to the damper may result. The following instructions are for a 3-blade, parallel blade operation, right hand CCW-open damper. The rotation range of the output collar is factory set for 0 to 90 in the CW direction. The rotation range can be changed as follows: 1. Push down the gear release and rotate the collar CW to the 90 position. 2. On the back side of the actuator, use a small screwdriver to release the locking clip and pull out the collar as shown in Figure 12. Mount the crank arm and the ball joint, according to the following instructions, before reinstalling the collar. Locking Clip Direction to Rem ove Collar Collar 90 0 Gear Release Figure 12: Releasing Locking Clip and Collar Mounting the Crank Arm and Ball Joint to the Actuator Coupler Remove the crank arm and shaft clamp plug from the M kit. 1. Loosen and remove the two clamp nuts and washers. 2. Figure 13: Mounting Crank Arm 6 M Damper Mount Linkage Kit Installation Bulletin

7 Repositioning the Actuator Coupler for Kit Application Figure 14: Repositioning Coupler 1. Reinsert the coupler into the actuator with the pointer at the 45 or center position. The crank arm will be pointing up as shown in Figure Verify the setting is correct by engaging the manual gear release and rotating the coupler CCW approximately 45, where the external actuator stops, will prevent further CCW rotation. Rotate the coupler CW back to the straight-up position, where the internal actuator stops, will prevent further CW rotation. Mounting the Actuator to the Reinforcement Plate 1. Turn the actuator over to the back side. Assemble the two 3/8 inch long inserts, one each, into the two plastic mounting holes at the top of the actuator. Make sure the inserts are pushed in flush with the back of the actuator. 2. Assemble a No. 8 flat washer onto each of the No x 1-3/4 inch long screws, then insert the two No screws through the two mounting holes in the top of the actuator. 3. Assemble a spacer, 7/16 inch diameter x 1/4 inch thick, on each screw on the back of the actuator before assembling to the reinforcement plate as shown in Figure Mount the actuator to the reinforcement plate by sliding the slot on the bottom back side of the actuator onto the tab on the anti-rotation bracket, then position the two screws at the top of the actuator through the holes that are aligned at the top of the plate. 5. Assemble the No. 8 split lock washers and nuts to the screws and tighten by securing the actuator to the reinforcement plate. Spacer Mounting the Anti-rotation Bracket to the Reinforcement Plate Insert Figure 16: Mounting Actuator Figure 15: Installing Anti-rotation Bracket Fasten the anti-rotation bracket to the reinforcement plate using two No x 1/2 inch hex-head, threadforming screws. 8 Installing the Damper Blade Arm Linkage Side View of Blade Arm Connection Blade Arm Attached to Driving Blade at Second Set of Knockouts Figure 18: Rod Connection Head Figure 17: Blade Arm 1. Determine the location for mounting the blade arm on the damper blade. The correct location of the blade arm will result in the drive rod being parallel to the universal mounting bracket and perpendicular to the damper blade. (For the M9100 actuator this should be the second set of Tog-L-Loc knockouts.) 2. Check Out Procedures IMPORTANT: During the following check out procedure the end of the travel positions must be controlled by the actuator end stops and not by the damper blade stops. 1. Wire the actuator following the appropriate M9100 Series Electric Motor Actuator Product/Technical Bulletin or M9200 Series Electric Motor Spring Return Actuator Product/Technical Bulletin. 2. Drive the actuator to the full open position making sure the actuator external end stops contact before the damper blade completes 90 rotation. 3. Drive the actuator to the full close position making sure the actuator internal end stop contacts before the damper blade over travels damaging the damper. If the damper does not fully close, drive the actuator CCW approximately 3 seconds. Loosen the ball joint nut retaining the drive rod. Make sure the damper is fully closed, pull the rod tight, and retighten the ball joint nut. 4. Drive the actuator between the full open and full closed positions making sure the linkage is adjusted correctly. Controls Group 507 E. Michigan Street P.O.
