3 2 The structure of this manual The structure of this manual Before reading this manual, you should know This manual describes the vehicle equipment at the time of publication. Some of the equipment described here will not be available until a later date, or is available only in certain markets. Some of the equipment and functions described in this manual are not included in all types or versions of the model; there may be variations or modifications, depending on technical difficulties and market demands. In no case does this constitute false advertising. The illustrations are a standard representation and some details may differ from what is found on your vehicle. The steering directions (left, right, forward, back) appearing in the manual refer to the direction in which the vehicle is moving, unless stated otherwise. The equipment marked with an asterisk* is supplied as standard on certain versions of the model only, it can be supplied as an option on some models, or else it is only on sale in certain countries. Registered trademarks are marked. Even if the copyright symbol does not appear this does not mean that the trademark is not registered. The section is continued on the following page. 4 Safety first 3 Safety first Seat belts Safety belt warning lamp* The warning lamp acts as a reminder to the driver to fasten the seat belt. Before starting the vehicle: Fasten your safety belt securely. Instruct your passengers to fasten their seat belts properly before driving off. Protect children by using child seats of the correct height for the age of the child. The warning lamp in the instrument panel lights up 1) if the driver or passenger seat belt is not fastened when the ignition is switched on. In addition, an acoustic signal is given for a few seconds and a text is displayed on the combi-instrument asking you to 2) fasten your seat belt. The warning lamp* does not go out until the driver seat belt is fastened while the ignition is switched on. 1) The passenger warning system is only supplied on certain models of the Leon. 2) Depending on the version of the model.

5 4 Controls and equipment Controls and equipment Warning lamps Soot accumulation in the particulate filter on diesel engines If this symbol lights up, you can help the filter to self-clean by driving suitably for the purpose. Therefore, you should drive for about 15 minutes in fourth or fifth gear (automatic gearbox: S gear range) at a speed of 60 km.p.h., with the engine running at approximately 2000 rpm. This raises the temperature and burns off the accumulation of soot in the filter. When the filter has been cleaned successfully, the filter light goes off. If the symbol is not deactivated, bring the vehicle to a specialized workshop to repair the fault. WARNING Always reduce speed as appropriate for the terrain, road type, traffic and weather conditions. The recommendations made for driving must never lead to contravention of the traffic laws. The particulate filter in diesel engines reaches very high temperatures, therefore it is recommended to park the vehicle in such a way that the particulate filter does not come into contact with the highly inflammable material underneath the vehicle. Failure to comply could result in fire.

6 Practical Advice 5 Practical Advice Driving and the environment Care and cleaning Particulate filter for diesel engines The particulate filter for diesel engines eliminates the soot produced during diesel combustion. The particulate filter for diesel engines removes most of the soot from the exhaust system. When driving normally, the filter is self-cleaning. If the filter is unable to self-clean (e.g. when constantly making short journeys), there is a build-up of carbon in the filter and the symbol for the diesel engine particle filter illuminates. See under Warning Lights. WARNING The particulate filter in diesel engines can reach very high temperatures, therefore it is recommended not to park the vehicle in such a way that the particulate filter comes into contact with the highly inflammable material under the vehicle. Failure to comply could result in fire. Caution Vehicles equipped with a diesel engine particulate filter must not be refuelled using biodiesel (RME), given that the fuel system may be damaged. Automatic car wash The car can be washed in an automatic car wash without any problem. The paint is so durable that the car can normally be washed without problems in an automatic car wash. However, the effect on the paint depends to a large extent on the design of the car wash, the brushes used, the filtering of the wash water and the type of detergents and wax solutions used, etc. There are no special precautions to be taken before putting the vehicle through an automatic car wash, other than those that must always be taken (close windows and sun roofs). If the vehicle has special accessories such as spoilers or a roof carrier or twoway radio aerial, etc., it is advisable to consult the car wash operator. After washing, the brakes may be slow to respond, as the brake discs and pads will be wet, or even frozen in winter. Dry the brakes by applying the brakes carefully several times WARNING Moisture, ice and salt on the brakes may affect braking efficiency. Risk of accident. Caution Before taking the vehicle through the car wash, do not screw in the aerial if it is retracted, as this could damage it.

7 6 Practical Advice Accessories, parts replacement and modifications Roof aerial* The vehicle may be fitted with a folding* anti-theft* roof aerial, which can be folded back. To fold Unscrew the aerial rod, tilt it backwards into a horizontal position and then screw in again. To return to working position Proceed in reverse order. Caution Before taking the vehicle through the car wash, do not screw in the aerial if it is retracted, as this could damage it.
