The design criteria and engineering objectives of Steerprop Azimuth Propulsors are reliability and consistency that provide efficient propulsion device, easy and simple installation procedures, and trouble free, economic operation cycle. The number of the proprietary components is minimized. The majority of the parts and components of a Steerprop Azimuth Propulsor are available in public domain. 4.2 Transmission Input shaft Input shaft is supplied with suitable flange to fit counter flange of the intermediate shaft Sequential Strength The power transmission is exploits the sequential principle. The selected relatively weaker parts protect valuable and hard access components of the power train. Consequently the weakest component is a blade of the propeller Shafts Shafts are made of high tensile carbon steel complying with the requirements for the strength and those of the regulatory agents.
6 SP 35 D W / 14 The propeller shaft has liners for the shaft seal. The vertical shaft is split with the tooth coupling for two reasons: it enables the installation of the propulsor in two portions and works as a safety fuse in case of accident. The lower part of the vertical shaft makes up a pinion to the lower bevel gear. The gear wheels and the propeller are mounted on the shafts with shrink fit joints. Consequently there are no keyways in the entire Steerprop unit Right Angle Gears The gears are designed and manufactured according to Klingelnberg cyclopalloid method. The material is a special alloy steel for sufficient strength. The engineering of the gears is accomplished by Steerprop Ltd. paying attention to the distinctive requirements imposed by the azimuth propulsion. In the HPG method the finishing cutting is done after the case hardening resulting in accurate tooth form. The gears are made to the Accuracy Grade 6 according to DIN 3965 (equivalent with AGMA 12) Bearings 4.3 Housing The final approval of the Steerprop gear assemblies takes place in the full torque test at the factory before accepting a propulsor for delivery. Each tooth contact is tested to assure the correctness of the assembly. This method is a comprehensive and unforgiving quality assurance revealing flaws in the gear geometry, shaft assemblies and even abnormal deflection of the gear housing. All of the bearings are roller bearings. They are dimensioned according to the recommendations of the maritime regulatory agencies, manufacturers, and the pertinent standards. The life cycle L 10h is minimum 40,000 hours. The housings and casings encapsulating the transmission and azimuth system are fabricated of Fe 52-steel plate. Special attention is paid in engineering the shapes, and material thickness not only to provide the appropriate hydrodynamic attributes but also to be sturdy having ample strength and rigidity for harsh dynamic conditions an azimuth propulsor operates in. After welding the body parts are annealed for obliterating the welding stresses Safety Feature 4.4 Seal Systems Besides the overall strength of the housing structures the particular attention is paid to the safety: The bolted flange in the azimuth tube above the propeller is carefully dimensioned to break in controlled manner in case of overwhelming impact, such as hard grounding Shaft seal condition monitoring Steerprop has Flush Fluid Seal Secure system for providing head pressure, seal lubrication and means for heat dissipation of the seals.
7 SP 35 D W / 14 To protect the propeller shaft seal a rope guard is assembled with cutters. The seals can be monitored with a new method: the head fluid in between the sequentially located seal elements is connected to the head tank with the loop that leads the fluid through the space between the azimuthing tube seals to propeller shaft seal and returning to the head tank. This feature is used for monitoring the condition of the seals and detecting leaks in the early phase of failure. The sealing tank is preferably a gravity tank. The following picture defines the head needed. If the head is not attainable the tank must be pressurized. The shipyard has to determine in early stage whether the needed head is obtainable and duly advise Steerprop Ltd Azimuthing Seals The number of the azimuth tube seals is three in series.
8 SP 35 D W / Propeller shaft Seals The propeller shaft seal asembly consists of four seal elements in sequence. The rope guard with line cutters are furnished.
