3 Xcite Model Number 1206-ZSP Introduction The Xcite is a high efficiency energy absorber designed for use in production and process plant applications. The Reso-not TM System damps vibration caused by operating machinery and allows improved productivity by reducing wear of parts and, in many cases, allows operation at higher speeds than attainable with undamped systems. 2. Theory of Operation The Xcite converts mechanical vibration energy into heat and dissipates it into the ambient air. This process is known as damping. The fundamental operation of this system is as follows: The manifold routes the oil directly to the large area of the piston (3.14 sq. in.) and through precision restrictors to the small area side of the piston (1.49 sq. in.). The static force exerted by the piston is the difference in areas times the static pressure, i.e. (3.14 sq. in sq. in.) x 1000 PSI = 1650 lbs. This static force is irrespective of the static position of the piston as long as it is within the 1.75 inch stroke. This static force is used as a preload to keep the piston in contact with the vibration structure. When the structure vibrates due to its own operation disturbances, the piston moves the oil from one side to the other. This flow is restricted by cross port restrictors and the resulting heat build-up of the restrictors is dissipated by the cylinder body. Precision restrictors are also in the hydraulic input line to keep flow from returning to the accumulator. This process results in dissipation of the vibrational energy of the structure and results in a reduction of vibration amplitude. 3. Description The Xcite Reso-not TM Damper is comprised of two major components: A hydraulic cylinder with a special manifold and a nitrogen precharged accumulator. A brief description of these components follows: 3.1. Hydraulic Cylinder The Reso-not TM Hydraulic Cylinder is single-ended and has a 2 bore, 1.38 rod and a 1.75 stroke. The special manifold contains precision flow restrictors. RDS - 3

4 3.2. Accumulator The oil pressure required for system operation is 1000 PSI which is achieved with an accumulator recharge of 1000 PSI. 4. Assembly and Preparation Mount the hydraulic cylinder and accumulator assembly using the bolt holes provided. The cylinder must be mounted such that the structure to be damped is within 1 inch of the fully retracted piston. As in all hydraulic systems, extreme cleanliness is required in installation and maintenance. 5. System Start Up and Operation The Xcite Vibration Reduction System is shipped filled with hydraulic fluid. Care should be exercised to not loosen any fittings or remove the hose which connects the accumulator to the hydraulic cylinder assembly. All entrapped air has been removed from the system and any disassembly of the system will cause air to reenter the system and render it inoperable. After installation of the system is complete, connect a source of 1000 PSI nitrogen to the valve fitting located on the top of the accumulator. Charge the accumulator until the pressure gage on the accumulator reads 1000 PSI. (An optional hose charging assembly is available which allows connection to a standard nitrogen bottle right handed screw connection.) After pressurization is complete, be sure to turn the accumulator charge valve counter clockwise before removing the source of nitrogen pressurization. Once the above steps are completed, the Reso-not TM Damper System is now operational and ready to use. 6. Maintenance Maintenance of the Reso-not TM Damper is minimal. Since the key to the operation of the system is maintaining 1000 PSI hydraulic pressure, steps must be taken to assure its continued presence. This can be done visually by routinely inspecting the pressure gage located on the top of the accumulator. Routine Maintenance: Minimal routine maintenance is required on the Reso-not TM Damper. Unless a severe leak should occur, it is not advisable to replace the hydraulic fluid in the system with normal operating conditions. RDS - 4

5 If the oil pressure drops below 1000 PSI, the following steps should be taken: 7.1. Check for oil leaks Recharge the accumulator with Nitrogen until the gage reads 950 to 1050 PSI Observe the pressure gage and assure that it remains at 950 to 1050 PSI Check for gas leaks Replace the accumulator if the accumulator fails to maintain 950 to 1050 PSI after verifying that there are no oil leaks To refill and bleed system (ONLY if oil has been lost from the system) Provide a source of oil (Mobil DTE-24 or equivalent) to the damper fill valve. (Use the optional Xcite charging pump.) Connect source of nitrogen with variable pressure adjustment Bleed down the accumulator nitrogen until gage reads approximately 150 PSI on accumulator gage Remove cap from fill side of assembly and connect to hydraulic pump with variable pressure adjustment Close valve between accumulator and damper DO NOT open the one way fill valve connected to the accumulator (oil will flow in but not out with the valve closed) Pump and fill the accumulator with oil from hydraulic pump until accumulator gage reads 500 PSI Leave pump connected Open valve between accumulator and damper cylinder. 6 Crack open upper bleed port (P-2) on damper manifold. Let oil run slowly. Air may bubble out after a few seconds. Close port (P-2) when oil runs clear Crack the lower port (P-1) on the damper manifold. Close port (P-1) when oil runs clear Stop the pump and disconnect from damper system. Replace filler cap. (Pressure should still be 500 PSI) Charge accumulator with nitrogen until accumulator gage reads 1000 PSI Remove nitrogen source - be sure to turn off filler valve so accumulator will not discharge when removing nitrogen source. Replace filler cap. 8.
