NOTE: Various components may be serviced without transaxle/transmission removal. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article. ADJUSTMENTS WARNING: Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. ADJUSTMENTS > GEARSHIFT CABLE 1. Loosen set screw and remove knob from shifter handle. See Fig Remove the center console. See Fig Adjust gearshift cable as follows: a. Place gearshift lever in the "PARK" (P) position. b. Loosen shift cable adjustment screw. See Fig 3. c. Move transaxle manual lever to the "PARK" position. d. Verify transaxle is in "PARK" by attempting to roll vehicle in either direction. e. Tighten shift cable adjustment screw to 70 INCH Lbs. (8 N.m) torque. 4. Verify proper cable adjustment. Engine should start with the shifter lever in "PARK" (P) and "NEUTRAL" (N) positions only. 5. Install center console assembly. See Fig Install gearshift knob and tighten set screw to 17 INCH Lbs. (2 N.m) torque. See Fig 1.

NOTE: If battery is disconnected or voltage supply to TCM is interrupted, TCM must relearn shift characteristics. Perform shift quality quick-learn procedure. See appropriate DIAGNOSIS article. CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION > GEARSHIFT CABLE > REMOVAL 1. Loosen set screw and remove knob from shifter handle. See Figure. 2. Remove the center console assembly. See Figure. 3. Remove shifter bezel. See Fig Disconnect shift cable from shifter mechanism. See Fig Remove three grommet plate to floor pan nuts. See Fig Remove air cleaner assembly. See Fig Disconnect both battery cables, remove battery hold down clamp and bolt, and remove battery. See Fig Remove battery tray from bracket. See Fig Disconnect shifter cable from shift lever and remove from bracket. See Fig Raise vehicle on hoist. 11. Remove catalytic converter heat shield. See Fig Remove remaining grommet plate screw and remove cable assembly from vehicle. See Fig 8.
