1 by Mike Baird Rodeo Roundup Figure 1 When working with local transmission shops I occasionally get the opportunity to get my hands on a problem vehicle. This particular problem was with a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo with a 4L30E transmission. The computer was storing code P0758: Shift Solenoid B (2) Circuit Fault. While we were talking this problem through, the shop technician informed me that this job was covered by an extended warranty. The shop was initially authorized to change the solenoid and retest the transmission. After replacing the solenoid, the vehicle performed flawlessly during the road test no codes or drivability problems. Great: problem fixed. A few days later, the customer called to say that the Check Trans light was on again and the transmission wouldn t upshift. It was apparent that further diagnosis was necessary. Upon returning the vehicle to the shop the customer offered some additional information. She d noticed the problem occurred when the air conditioning was on. This wasn t something anyone had noticed before, so it was difficult for the shop to duplicate the failure. This is where I came in: The technician called to see if there were any 32 GEARS August 2002

3 Rodeo Roundup Figure 2 common reasons for this code to set with the A/C on. None showed up on a records check for this type of vehicle. The first step for me was to verify the customer s complaint. Live data wasn t available, so I chose codes only (figure 1). An important consideration when you clear codes is to make sure your scan tool displays a pass code. For this application we want to see a P0000 NO FAILURE (figure 2). After recording and clearing the code, it was time for the road test. Once the codes were cleared and An important consideration when you clear codes is to make sure your scan tool displays a pass code. For this application we want to see a P0000 NO FAILURE. the pass code verified, it was time to see if we could make the code set; I started the engine, put the transmission in drive, turned the A/C on, and nothing, no code. Okay, time for the test drive. After a few minutes of driving I was slowing for a stoplight. As I slowed to about 20 MPH, I felt a harsh shift, the Check Trans light came on, and the code stored. I cleared the code while waiting for the light to turn green and drove off again. The same thing happened after a few more stops and starts: The code would only set during a downshift with the A/C on. When I got back to the shop and put the vehicle on the lift an interesting thing happened: I started the engine and 34 GEARS August 2002
4 Figure 3 Figure 4 put the transmission into drive and just like that, the code was back instantly, without the A/C on. This led me to believe the problem would be in the external wiring, shorting somewhere between the computer and the transmission connector. It showed up on the lift because of the way the chassis tends to twist when you raise the wheels off the ground. This would also explain why the code only set while downshifting coming to a stop, which can cause the drivetrain to shift in the chassis. Just glancing under this Rodeo made me want to cringe; the wiring harnesses were rubbing on exhaust shields and support brackets on the transmission and along the side of the motor (figure 3). The quickest way to verify that wiring was the problem was to run a jumper wire from the computer to the transmission connector, and retest the transmission operation (figure 4). A quick look through the shop manual for Add Some Muscle to Your Rebuilds... The computer couldn t have been easier to work with, located in the center console; all I had to do was pull the access cover off to reach it (figures 5&6). I located and cut the solenoid B wire (tan with a black tracer) (figure 6). Then, with the wire disconnected, I started the engine to make sure the same code set with the solenoid wire disconnected I like to keep the smoke inside the computer. The same code set, so I connected the jumper and started the vehicle (figure 7). Great: no code. Figure 7 36 GEARS August 2002

7 Rodeo Roundup After returning from the test drive and experiencing no problems or codes, I decided to check the harness routing for any signs of damaged wiring, rather than running a permanent jumper wire (figure 8). From the diagram I determined that the solenoid wires did pass by the A/C compressor, located on the driver s side near the engine oil pan rail. One of the harnesses was right in front of the compressor, but not touching it (figure 9). When I pulled the harness away I could see it had rubbed through the conduit (figure 10). Only one wire out of about twenty in the harness had rubbed through: A tan wire with a black tracer (figure 11). After repairing the wire and taping the harness, I looked to see if I could relocate the harness. About a foot away from where the wires were now, I found an open bracket by the fan shroud, with the other harness from the computer still in it, and room for this one, too. After relocating the harness and reattaching the wire at the computer, I road tested the vehicle. With the A/C on or off the code didn t reappear. With a few easy steps this problem was fixed by jumping past ten feet of possible areas of rubbed through wires. Sometimes we won t find the exact area where a wire has failed, but running jumpers will certainly get us there a lot faster.
