3 I.5 35 UNITED STATES FATENT OFFICE. FRANKLIN L, BARBER AND CHARLESS. WALTON, OF CHICAGo, ILLINOIS, AssIGNORs TO STANDARD CAR TRUCK. COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIs, A CoRPORATION of NEWJERSEY. CAR-TRUCK, 1,229,398. Specification of Lette's Patent. Application filed April 28, Serial No. 165,077. Patented June 2, To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, FRANKLIN L. BAR tie bars 11 to the pedestals 9, the ends there 55 BER and CHARLEs S. WALTON, citizens of the of are bent upward to engage the backs of United States, residing at Chicago, in the Said pedestals. The side frame 6, at Will enable others skilled in the art to which the Sides of the bolster openings. 15, is con it appertains to make and use the same. structed to form bolster columns 16. These Our invention relates to improvements in bolster columns 16 extend from the bottoms 65 car trucks, and particularly to six-wheeled of the bolster openings 15 to the top of the equalized freight car trucks. To the above side frame 6 and, throughout substantially end, generally stated, the invention consists the full height of said openings, have a of the novel devices and combinations of de greater width than the transverse width of vices hereinafter described and defined in said side frame. Side bearing brackets are in 95 mounted between pedestals 9, with freedom tegrally cast with the bolster 19 and are for vertical movement. The pedestals 9, as????d by steel shoes 21. Spring-caps 24 are supported on and are detachably secured thereto by short coiled bolster springs arranged in groups nut-equipped bolts 10. The lower ends of of four and seated on the side frames 6, at each pair of pedestals 9 are rigidly con the bottoms of the bolster openings 15. The ends of the bolster J.9 are supported on the T

4 spring-caps 24 by lateral motion 'ollers 26 mounted in contours 27 formed in the under side of said bolster and in the tops of said Spring-caps. Intermediately fulcrumed on each journal box 8, is a cast equalizing lever or bar 28 having on its lower face a fulcrum lug 29 mounted in a bearing seat on the respec tive journal box 8 and supports said lever for rocking movement transversely of Said journal box. These equalizing levers 28 are located within the side frames 6 and have formed in their upper surfaces and at the ends thereof concave seats 31. Supported on the outer ends of the outer equalizing levers 28, directly below the spring-caps 17, are spring-bases 32, having on their under sides segmental bearing lugs 33 mounted in the respective seats 31 and which permit the required rocking movements of said levers. Also cast with the spring-bases 32, at the ends of the bearing lugs 33, are flanges 34 which embrace said levers and thereby hold the spring-bases against transverse movement thereon. Interposed between each spring base 32, and the overlying spring-cap 17, is a yielding abutment, in the form of two coiled springs 35, spaced, one in advance of the other, longitudinally of the respective equalizing lever 28. The inner ends of the outer equalizing levers 28 are connected to the ends of the intermediate equalizing lever 28 of each side frame 6 by pairs of bell-crank levers 36 and compression members, in the form of coiled springs 37. Each bell-crank lever 36 has on its sides segmental bearings 38, which are mounted on short axially alined trunnions 39 cast integral with the inner vertical walls ,229,898 of the side frames 6. The short horizontal arms of the bell-cranklevers 36 extend under the adjacent ends of the equalizing levers 28 and are connected thereto by rectangular links, through which said bell-crankle vers and equalizing levers project. The up per transverse portions of the links are made convex to fit the seats 31 and the lower transverse portions thereof are also formed convex to fit concave seats 41 formed on the under side of the short arms of the bell-crank levers 36. The long arms of the bell-crank levers 36 extend vertically upward and terminate in bearing heads 42, which extend into socket like bearings 43 formed in the outer ends of horizontally disposed and axially alined plungers 44. These plungers 44 are mounted in bearings formed in the upper portions of the bolster columns 16, for endwise slid ing movement longitudinally, with respect to the equalizing levers 28. The inner ends of the plungers 44 project into the bolster openings 15 and have integrally formed therewith spring-caps 46, between which the compression Springs 37 are compressed. Bosses 47, on the spring-caps 46, extend into the springs 37 and support the same from said spring-caps. By reference to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the ends of the bolster 19 are beveled to clear the compression springs 37. It is also important to note that the bolster springs, abutment springs 35 and compression springs 37 are of one size and shape, thus making the same interchange able, which assists materially in assembling the improved truck and in replacing Springs, in case they are broken or worn out. From the above description, it is evident that the load of the car is direct on the dou ble bolster 19 and it, in turn, is supported from the side frames through the bolster springs and lateral motion rollers 26. The weight on the side frames is distributed on the journal boxes 8 through the equalizing levers 28, bell-crank levers 36 and compres sion springs 37. It is also evident that each wheel of a car truck is allowed to move ver tically, independent of the other thereof. What we claim is: In a car truck, the combination with frames, bell-crank levers having one of their arms connected to the inner ends of Said equalizing levers, and compression springs interposed between the other arms of the bell-crank levers. 2. In a car truck, the combination with journal boxes, springs affording abutments interposed between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, bell crank levers having one of their arms con nected to the inner ends of said equalizing levers, and compression springs interposed between the other arms of the bell-crank levers In a car truck, the combination with frames, bell-crank levers, links connecting one of the arms of the bell-crank levers With the inner ends of the equalizing levers, and compression Springs interposed between the other arms of said bell-crank levers. 4.
