PRE-DELIVERY Congratulations on choosing a R I Irrigators travelling irrigator. The Australian made SB350 Rainspan irrigator is designed to perform successfully when operated properly in accordance with the manufacturer s specifications and guidelines. Please read the instructions contained in this manual carefully before operating your new irrigator. Failure to act in accordance with these guidelines may void your warranty. All bolts, nuts and screws on your new irrigator were tightened to correct specifications before the machine left the factory. However, these can become loose during shipping, and it is recommended that you ensure all are tightened before operating the machine. CHECK LIST 1. Check bolts, nuts and screws are all correctly tensioned. 2. Complete Re-lubrication 3. Drive chains properly adjusted 4. Winch cable properly installed through the guide roller and draw bar roller 5. Tyre pressures correct The SB350 Rainspan irrigator is a robust irrigation machine that will give years of trouble free service when operated correctly. SAFE OPERATION Be a safe operator. Think before acting and if in doubt always read your Owner s Manual or contact you local dealer. AVOID ACCIDENTS. Most accidents are due to a failure to follow simple and fundamental safety rules. A careful operator is the best insurance against accidents. Never operate or service a machine until you have been instructed and/or understand the irrigator fully. Never attempt to service, oil or adjust a machine while it is in motion or under load Never stand near the cable while it is under tension Never stand directly in front of, behind or between the wheels while machine is in operation or under load Never tow the irrigator trailing a hose full of water Never dismount from tractor while reeling hose or allow anyone to work near hose reel Never disengage gearbox while irrigator is under load Never pull hose by only one ear of the hose pull coupling Never stand directly under the boom. Always keep all shields and guards in place Always keep hands, feet and clothing away from hose cable and all moving parts of the machine Always stop the machine before making any adjustments or repairs and release cable tension before doing so Always keep well clear of sprinkler head while it is in operation. Always look for power lines. 2
LAYOUT Lanes should be a least 3 metres 4 metres (9 12 ) wide Try to keep the lanes well grassed and well mowed to prevent cable becoming fouled The lanes should be perfectly straight. Because of the high stresses that could be involved, caution must be exercised in running the machine over excessive gradients and on undulating ground. If in doubt consult your dealer. All sharp or abrasive objects that may damage the hose must be removed from the path of the irrigator PADDOCK LAYOUT EXAMPLE: Field layout for the SB350 irrigator will depend on boom width and field dimensions as shown by the example given in figure 3.1. Hydrants are located halfway and to the side of each run. Water Storage Finish Start Pump Site Run 1 Run 2 Run 3 Run 4 400m 600m Shed m House Road From Pump Anchor Points 3
3.2 PREPARING BOOM TO IRRIGATE 3.2a POSITIONING IRRIGATOR Using the three-point tow hitch, position irrigator at the start of a lane keeping clear of sheds and power poles. With the tractor hydraulics, slew the boom until it is orientated at 90 o to the run. With the boom in position, re-engage the slew lock and disconnect hydraulic hoses from the tractor. 3.2b LAYING HOSE AND CABLE Unhitch irrigator from tractor and slide layout bar into three-point tow hitch (figure 3.2). Position hose guide arm on the same side of the lane as the hydrant and lock in place. This will be the side to lay the hose. Disengage gearbox to release cable by sliding the disengagement lever out then connect the wire rope to the tow point on the tractor. Adjust cable drum brake, leaving enough tension so that the cable may be pulled out without moving the irrigator. Pull hose through the roller guides and around the rear layout roller on guide arm (figure 3.3). Connect hose coupling to layout bar with supplied chains (figure 3.2). Ensure cable shut-off clamp stopper (Trip Clamp) is set correctly and is tight on the cable. This will ensure the machine stops at the end of the run. FIGURE 3.2: Connect hose to layout bar and cable to tractor pull FIGURE 3.3: Wrap hose around rear roller STARTING UP (WATER-WINCH SB350) 1. (SB350 RAINSPAN). Reengage the gearbox by sliding the disengagement lever in. If the required turn the spline end on the gearbox with handle to aid in alien gears to re engage gearbox. 2. The sprinkler nozzle should be pointed straight down the grassed pathway so that, while pressure builds up, there will be no damage to the crop because of inadequate stream break-up. 3. Start the pump and, as pressure builds up, the power mechanism will automatically engage and the machine will commence travelling. NOTE: MAXIMUM TOWING SPEED FOR THE CABLE AND IRRIGATOR HOSE IS 5 KILOMETRES PER HOUR. 4
1. PRESSURE REQUIREMENTS SB350 RAINSPAN MODEL MINIMUM OPERATING PRESSURE 50 PSI at the machine R I Irrigators recommend the above minimum operating pressures for your Traveller to work effectively. Due to the low pressure it is imperative that all mains, couplings, hydrants, etc. are in first class working order, properly designed and installed. If any doubt please check with your Dealer. GENERAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 2. TRAVEL SPEED (SB350 TURBO WINCH) The travel speed of the irrigator is controlled by two methods. 1. GEARBOX (4 POSITIONS) N, 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd To select the required gear, we must firstly understand that the higher the gear, the faster the machine moves (just like driving a car) NEVER CHANGE GEARS WHILE THE MACHINE IS UNDER LOAD (operating) To change gear we need to FIRSTLY move the throttle lever to Zero Position. This allows the load to reduce from the machine. SECONDLY change gear position as required with the turbine turning slowly. THIRDLY move the throttle back to the required position and the machine will commence travelling again. 2. THROTTLE LEVER (Diverter Arm) ZERO to 6 This lever is the source of power to the Gear Box. We can set this to the desired position, after selecting the required gear. The higher the position of the Quadrant, the faster the machine will move. We can lock the throttle lever in position with the adjustable stop. 5
The only other variables to speed will be from water flow/pressure and hose load. END OF RUN PROCEDURE The Travelling Irrigator will automatically shut-down upon reaching the shut-off clamp at the end of the run. Switch off the pump and disconnect the hose from the mainline. Ensure the hose is laid out straight with no kinks. (SB350 RAINSPAN) Release cable tension by pushing the throttle lever to the zero position. Pull the disengagement Lever out to allow the cable to relax. Disconnect cable from anchor point and secure to the irrigator. Raze the draw bar to its locked position. Now hook the towing tractor to the irrigator and proceed to reel the hose in following these basic steps. 1. Back the irrigator up until you have metres (10 15 feet) of slack in the hose. 2. Purging the hose: Connect the PTO to the purge pump then open the ball valve. Close the butterfly valve under the hose reel. Engage P.T.O. and run tractor at 540 RPM MAXIMUM until the hose is empty. CLOSE THE BALL VALVE AFTER USE. 6
3. Winding hose in: Connect the tractor P.T.O. to the hose reel P.T.O. Now while seated on the tractor (stay there until job is finished) using low throttle idle. Reel in the hose stopping about 3 metres (10ft) from the end. The last 3 metres (10ft) should be secured by hand to the hose reel. 4. We are now ready to move to the next lane to start another irrigation run. CABLE DRUM BRAKE The cable drum is fitted with a spring loaded brake assembly. This is to prevent overrun when the cable is being pulled out. The brake assembly includes a handle for adjustment. CABLE REWIND If there is a need to rewind the irrigator cable manually, this can be achieved by a hand crank mechanism or by P.T.O. An example of this would be if there is a need for the cable to be anchored beyond the end of the run (Pathway). In this case the cable would be wound in manually. DRIVE CHAINS Eliminate slack in all chains by adjusting idlers, bearings or by removing a half or full link. HOSE REEL HORIZONTAL ROLLER This roller should be kept parallel to the hose reel and approx 25 mm (1 ) above the lower reel rim. 7
IRRIGATOR HOSE CARE OF THE HOSE The life of the hose will depend greatly on the care it receives from the owner. The hose can be repaired if it is accidentally damaged. There are a number of things that should be noted regarding hose care: Make sure all laneways are well grassed and free from sharp or abrasive objects such as stones etc. Do not drive tractors or farm equipment over the hose or operate tillage and harvesting equipment near the hose. Avoid using the hose for mainline by laying it at right angles to the pathway. This can complicate the procedure of winding up the hose. If the hose is cut so that the fibre core of the hose is damaged, consult your dealer for the method of repair. WARNING! REMEMBER ACCIDENTAL HOSE DAMAGE IS NOT COVERED BY MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. IT IS IN THE OWNERS INTEREST TO ADHERE TO THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS. 8
LUBRICATION SCHEDULE 1. Lubricate all bearing with water resistant pressure gun grease after every 5 irrigation run. 2. Oil all chains with chain oil as required. 3. Maintain the drive gearbox half-full level at sight gauge with EP-90 gear lubricant. 4. Maintain the purge pump tank at sight gauge fill with hyd oil as required. 5. Change oil in the drive gearbox and hose reel gear box once a year with EP-90 gear oil. 9

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS 1.0 BOOM ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION 1. Before unloading the truck make sure there is enough space for the entire boom, and that the ground is level. 2. Move the machine so it is in line making it possible to lift the boom onto it later. 3. Off load the tee piece and place it on wood blocks to keep the pipe from digging into the ground and also to keep it level. FIGURE 1: TEE PIECE 4. Off load the pipes and rods. Note that the pipes are marked on the flats and that the rods have a left and right to them. Make each bundle of pipes on the other side of the tee. 5. Lay out the pipes starting with the biggest first (number 4) and work your way out to the end. Lay them approximately 6 inches apart. The Numbers are welded on pipes Take a round file and clean out all gal build up in the bolt holes whilst they are all out together. FIGURE 1.B 7. Lay out all the rods in the same manner as the pipes starting with number 1 through to the end. NOTE: There are left and right rods. 1
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS 8. Lay out the A FRAMES. NOTE! Keep the small A Frame at the tee as you are going to use it to assist you in assembly.. FIGURE 2: PIPES RODS & A FRAMES LAID OUT 9. On the first A Frame you must use 60mm bolts on the top of the flange on the tee. FIGURE 3: BOLT A-FRAME TO FLANGE 2
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS 10. Lay out the bolts 50mm and the gaskets along with the eye/eye turnbuckles. 11. Lay out the straps, the top plate assembly and the rod nest to or close to the tee. For the top plate you need four (4) 60mm bolts but the remainder requires 50mm. 12. As outlined in the sprinkler details included with the despatch list, grease the goosenecks and fit onto the pipes to reduce interference with the rods later on. 13. Bolt up the first pipes to the tee. Ensure a gasket is fitted between the flanges and the bottom bolts so as they are loose. Fit the smallest A Frame under the pipe on the opposite end so as the bolts point away from the Tee. 14. Bolt number 4 A Frame on, using the 60mm bolts on the top holes so they point the opposite way to the bottom bolts that point to the tee. Tighten bolts with the fingers only and do both A Frames. FIGURE 4: TOP PLATE BOLTED TO A FRAME 15. Now the top plate assembly is bolted to the A Frame at the top with the flat part facing inwards. Also the rod flat (part at the top) and straps (the bend part outwards) in this order using the inside hole of the top plate and using 60mm bolts only finger tight. 3
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS 16. Bolt the straps to the Tee and the rods flat at the top with the turnbuckles down to the A Frame. Turnbuckles FIGURE 5: BOLTING THE STRAPS AND RODS 17. The middle and bottom rods can now be bolted to the top plate assembly. Make sure that the flat part is at the top and the bend is at the bottom. Use 50mm bolts and finger tighten. Small Plate Turnbuckles Top Rod Large Plate Middle Rod Bottom Rod Turnbuckles FIGURE 6: BOLTING RODS NOTE: Turn the turn buckles out as far as possible 18. Bolt the bottom rod and the middle rod to the pipe using the turnbuckle between the bottom rod and the pipe. FIGURE 7: BOLTING RODS TO PIPE 4
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS 19. Once both sides are done remove the small A Frame from the end of the pipes and take up the slack on the turnbuckle to ensure the bottom rods are straight (You need to do this each time with the turnbuckles to keep your rods straight). Now you can tighten all the bolts whilst ensuring you keep the A Frames square to each other. 20. Fit the top rods. Make sure you have the holes correct, small flat fix to the top plate assembly as shown below. *Note the hole position FIGURE 8: FITTING THE TOP RODS 21. Fit the next pipe with small A Frame at end to hold pipe in. Fit the next A Frame in the same manner as the previous one. Now bolt the top rods the A Frame. Once all the bolts are in place you may remove the small A Frame and tighten the bolts. Make sure the A Frames are parallel with one another. FIGURE 9: FITTING A FRAMES TO PIPE AND TOP RODS TO A FRAMES 22. Section 6 is assembled using the same procedure as Section 5. 5
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS 23. To trim the boom you must first use the turnbuckles as in section 4. The bottom bay rods are only to lift and straighten the middle of the pipe. The top bay rods will not only lift the pipe quickly but they will also move the pipes left and right. In the drawing above loosen top bay rod (R) and tighten top rod (L). When using top rod turnbuckles the boom will lift or lower less than when using the Top Bay Rods. FIGURE The last turnbuckle is to lift and straighten Number 6 and the half pipe if needed. 25. Assemble the sprinklers using grease on the treads. Lay them out alongside the boom according to here they need to be fitted on the goosenecks. 26. Make sure that all the are tightened up and the boom has been trimmed. You are now ready to lift it up from the ground. 27. Loosen the bolts that hold the slew gear in place on top of the machine so as you can fit the boom. 28. Lift the boom to a distance of 700mm 1000mm off the ground and fit the sprinkler assembly followed by the boom bumpers. Ensure that all valves are open. Boom Bumper FIGURE 14: BOOM BUMPER POSITIONING Boom Bumper 29. Lift the boom high enough so that you can push the machine underneath it. Place it down on the slew gear. 6
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS NOTE: that you must take care when placing the boom down. The Tee pipe must go into the vertical pipe and be careful not to damage or dislodge the weld bell rubber from its place. If care is not taken a water leak may occur. You need to lift the gear covers before tightening the bolts. 30. Majority of assembly is now complete and the irrigator can now be prepared for use. 2.0 MOVING THE IRRIGATOR IMPORTANT Before moving the machine always use the linch pin provided to properly secure the irrigator to the three-point tow hitch. Disengage slew gear by rotating locking lever located at the side of the irrigator tower towards the centre of the machine. Release the handle ratchet locks in the notches provided.
