5 PCS series to 75 kw PCS overview The PCS is a compact, simple to use soft starter product designed for 3 phase motors with ratings of up to 45 kw (3 wire) and 75 kw ( wire). Unlike competing compact soft starter products, the PCS controls all three phases to the motor, thereby further extending its application possibilities and minimising thermal stresses on the motor. The basic PCS soft starter features built-in electronic motor protection with adjustable trip class together with a number of other motor and system protection functions. It also has a builtin bypass contactor, thus providing very low watts loss, smaller footprint dimensions, suitability for high density motor control panels and minimising installed cost. The multiple starting and stopping modes offered by the PCS as standard make it suitable for a large variety of industrial applications. The PCS is currently available in 2 voltage ranges, V AC (stocked by NHP) and V AC (available on indent basis) and are suitable for connection to 50 or 0 Hz supply systems. Motor starting PCS soft starters provide the user a selection of starting and stopping modes as standard. The ability to select and tailor the starting format ensures the full benefits of soft starting can be achieved in any industrial motor starting application. Standard starting modes Timed voltage ramp The timed voltage ramp soft start mode offered by the PCS has the most general application. User adjustments for initial torque and start ramp time allow the PCS to be configured for a variety of applications. The initial torque can be adjusted from 15 % to 5 % of locked rotor torque. The start ramp time can be adjusted from 2 to 30 seconds. Timed voltage ramp soft start Current limit The current limit start mode is used when it is necessary to limit the maximum starting current. The current limit setting can be adjusted to provide 150 %, 250 %, 350 % or 450 % of full load amps during start. The start time is also user adjustable from 2 to 30 seconds. Note: If the motor is not up to speed after the selected time elapses, the PCS will transition to full voltage. Current limit Kickstart The kickstart function is intended for use on machines that present a high frictional starting characteristic. It provides a current pulse of 450 % FLC over a user adjustable period of 0 to 1.5 seconds, allowing the motor to develop the additional starting torque required to get the load moving. 6 PCS series to 75 kw Standard stopping modes Soft Stop The soft stop function can be used to extend the stopping time of the motor and load. When enabled, the ramp down time can be set to either once, twice or three times the start ramp time setting. The motor will stop when the output voltage from the PCS reaches the point where the load torque is greater than the motor torque. Timed voltage ramp soft stop Starter over-temperature protection The PCS monitors the temperature of its power circuits (SCRs) by means of internal thermistors. When the maximum rated temperature of the power assembly is reached, the PCS switches off and a temperature fault is indicated via LED. Shorted SCR protection Prior to every start, the PCS will check the integrity of its power assembly (SCRs) and load connections to the motor. If the PCS detects a shorted SCR and/or open circuit on its output, the start will be aborted. This prevents damage from phase imbalance. Fault indication In all cases, when a fault is detected the PCS will trip in order to protect the motor and illuminate a fault LED. The fault LED is flash coded, to assist the user in identifying the trip cause thus simplifying the troubleshooting process. PCS protection functions Electronic motor overload protection with user selectable trip class The PCS soft starter provides electronic motor overload protection with adjustable trip class and automatic or manual reset selectivity as standard making it extremely versatile. The motor full load current is user adjusted via a potentiometer located on the front panel. Overload trip class (either OFF, 10, 15 or 20 seconds) and automatic or manual reset operation are DIP switch selectable. Note: The trip rating is 120 % of potentiometer setting. Phase sequence protection The PCS provides a user selectable (ON or OFF) phase sequence protection function as standard. When selected, the PCS will monitor the incoming phases before application of power to the motor. Phase loss protection The PCS provides phase loss protection as standard to ensure the motor will not attempt to start when there is a power phase missing. This protects the motor from burnout resulting from single phase starting conditions. PCS set-up procedure Quick and accurate set-up of the PCS is assured through a simple to use combination DIP switch selection panel and potentiometer. Where only basic soft start and motor protection functionality is required, the user need only set the motor full load current. PCS DIP switch selection panel PCS optional extras Auxiliary contacts The PCS provides 2 output relays as standard, one of which is programmable for instantaneous or up-to-speed operation. Should additional contacts be required, auxiliary contacts are available in a number of configurations. Open circuit output/open load protection The PCS monitors the motor circuit to ensure the motor is connected throughout all phases of operation. Phase imbalance protection The PCS provides phase imbalance protection as standard. During run it continually monitors motor current through its internal current transformers. To prevent motor over-heating or damage, the PCS will trip if the phase imbalance exceeds specified limits. Remote fault reset Remote reset functionality can be achieved by installing a remote reset magnet onto the PCS. Reset magnets are available for all common AC control voltages. Protective modules Protective modules containing metal oxide varistors (MOVs) and snubber networks can be installed to protect the PCS against line transients and electrical noise. Protection features further explained Electronic motor overload protection with user adjustable motor thermal model. The CSXi soft starter provides built-in motor overload protection with adjustable thermal model as standard. The thermal model allows the user to select the tripping curve which most closely resembles the thermal withstand curve of the connected motor. This eliminates nuisance motor overload tripping, while maximising machine up-time and plant productivity. User adjustable Motor FLC and thermal model via rotary switches located on the front panel. Motor thermistor protection In order to further enhance motor protection, the CSXi provides an input for direct connection of your motor thermistors. Phase imbalance protection The CSXi offers phase imbalance protection as standard. During both start and run, the CSXi monitors motor current through its internal current transformers. In order to prevent motor damage, burn out or over heating, the CSXi will trip if an imbalance exceeds specified limits or a phase loss occurs. Power circuit protection Prior to the application of power to the motor but following a start command, the CSXi monitors its line and load connection and the integrity of its SCRs. Should any abnormality be detected, the CSXi will trip thus ensuring the motor is not compromised. Excess start time protection The CSXi will trip if the starting time exceeds the motor s safe starting time characteristics, ensuring the motor is not subjected to high currents for an excessive period of time. This feature will also ensure the load is not jammed or too large at start up. Supply frequency error The supply frequency during start and run may vary under some conditions including generator power situations. The CSXi monitors supply frequency to ensure that it is not operating outside its design parameters thus preventing damage to itself and the motor. Phase sequence protection Phase sequence protection is of particular advantage in applications that are rotation direction sensitive such as pumps, compressors etc. The CSXi will monitor the incoming phase rotation before application of power to the motor to prevent incorrect rotation of the motor. This feature is user configurable to fwd or any phase sequence application. Communications failure Automated plants utilise the communications features of the CSXi. Connection integrity is vital to maintain control and protection of the motor. The CSXi monitors the communications link to maintain supervisory control and displays a fault when a break occurs. CSXi Set-up Although the CSXi offers broad functionality, set-up is a simple process. A series of clearly labelled rotary switches is provided to ensure accurate and repeatable settings are easily made. Simply rotate these to the desired position (no need for a user manual) and you re ready to go. Fault and status information Fault and status information is provided by on-board flash coded LEDs. 13 EMX3 for motors to V AC and 90 V AC Refer catalogue EMX3 Overview The EMX3 is an advanced digital soft start solution for motors from 7.5 kw to 1500 kw. EMX3 soft starters provide a complete range of motor and system protection features and have been designed for reliable performance in the most demanding installation situations. Motor starting The EMX3 puts you truly in control of motor starting. Depending on your application requirements you can select between the two best soft start control methods. For applications requiring precise control of motor start current EMX3 offers a choice of Constant Current or Current Ramp start modes. Or for superior control over acceleration or deceleration choose XLR-8 Adaptive Acceleration Control. Standard starting modes XLR-8 XLR-8 adaptive acceleration control is a new intelligent motor control technique developed by AuCom. In an XLR-8 soft start, the EMX3 adjusts the current in order to start the motor within a specified time and using a selected acceleration profile. Every application has a particular starting profile, based on characteristics of the load and motor. XLR-8 offers three different starting profiles, to suit the requirements of different applications. Selecting an XLR-8 profile that matches the inherent profile of the application can help smooth out acceleration across the full start time. Selecting a dramatically different XLR-8 profile can somewhat neutralise the inherent profile. For example, using a late cubic profile to start an early cubic application will result in a more linear behaviour XLR-8 Adaptive acceleration control XLR-8 start profile 1 Early acceleration 2 Constant acceleration 3 Late acceleration 4 Start ramp time Time Constant current Timed current ramp Current ramp soft starting raises the current from a specified starting level to a maximum limit, over an extended period of time. Current ramp starting can be useful for applications where: The load can vary between starts (for example a conveyor which may start loaded or unloaded). Set the initial current to a level that will start the motor with a light load, and the current limit at a level that will start the motor with a heavy load. The load breaks away easily, but starting time needs to be extended (for example a centrifugal pump where pipeline pressure needs to build up slowly). The electricity supply is limited (for example a generator set), and a slower application of load will allow greater time for the supply to respond. Current ramp Kickstart Kickstart provides a short boost of extra torque at the beginning of a start, and can be used in conjunction with current ramp or constant current starting. Kickstart can be useful to help start loads that require high breakaway torque but then accelerate easily (for example flywheel loads such as presses). Kickstart Constant current Constant current is the traditional form of soft starting, which raises the current from zero to a specified level and keeps the current stable at that level until the motor has accelerated. Constant current starting is ideal for applications where the start current must be kept below a particular level For further information please contact Sales 1300 NHP NHP or visit nhp.com.au GST not included

14 EMX3 series overview Standard stopping modes XLR-8 Adaptive deceleration control In an XLR-8 soft stop, the EMX3 controls the current in order to stop the motor within a specified time and using a selected deceleration profile. XLR-8 can be useful in extending the stopping time of low interia loads. Every application has a particular stopping profile, based on characteristics of the load and the motor. XLR-8 offers three different stopping profiles XLR-8 Adaptive deceleration control 1 TVR Soft Stop Time Choose the XLR-8 profile that best matches your application requirements. XLR-8 stop profile: 1 Early deceleration 2 Constant deceleration 3 Late deceleration 4 Stop time TVR soft stop Timed voltage ramp reduces the voltage to the motor gradually over a defined time. The load may continue to run after the stop ramp is complete. Timed voltage ramp stopping can be useful for applications where the stop time needs to be extended, or to avoid transients on generator set supplies Brake When brake is selected, the EMX3 uses DC injection to slow the motor. Braking The EMX3 braking: Does not require the use of a DC brake contactor Controls all three phases so that the braking currents and associated heating is evenly distributed through the motor. Braking has two stages: 1. Pre-brake: provides an intermediate level of braking to slow motor speed to a point where full brake can be operated successfully (approximately 70 % speed). 2. Full brake: brake provides maximum braking torque but is ineffective at speeds greater than approximately 70 %. Standard protection Motor thermal model The EMX3 will verify whether the motor has sufficient thermal capacity for a successful start. The soft starter compares the motor s temperature rise from the last motor start and only operates if the motor is cool enough to start successfully. Excess start time Excess start time is the maximum time the EMX3 will attempt to start the motor. If the motor does not reach full speed within the programmed limit, the starter will trip indicating a stalled condition. Electronic shearpin protection With electronic shearpin or instantaneous overcurrent protection the EMX3 can be configured to trip if the average current of all three phases exceeds a specified level while the motor is running. This would usually occur in a stall or locked rotor condition. Undercurrent The soft starter can be configured to trip if the average current of all three phases drops below a specified level while the motor is running. This undercurrent or under-load is usually indicative of a broken coupling between the motor and driven machine, a broken conveyer belt, loss of product or a dry pump. Mains frequency The EMX3 monitors mains frequency throughout operation, and can be configured to trip if the frequency varies beyond a specified tolerance. EMX3-255B-V4-C1-H Phase sequence This feature selects which phase sequences the soft starter will allow at a start. During its pre-start checks, the starter examines the sequence of the phases at its input terminals and trips if the actual sequence does not match the selected option. 15 EMX3 series overview Additional standard protection Current imbalance The EMX3 can be configured to trip if the currents on the three phases vary from each other by more than a specified amount. The imbalance is calculated as the difference between the highest and lowest currents on all three phases, as a percentage of the highest current. Auxiliary input trip Auxiliary input trip allows the connection of external fault detection devices, such as low pressure or no flow detectors, vibration sensors, etc. Motor thermistor input The EMX3 has provisions for motor thermistor input and is able to detect excessive temperature in the motor windings generally caused by a stall or from inadequate ventilation. RS 485 failure The EMX3 s serial link is provided with a user adjustable timeout function which will trip if the maximum allowable period of RS 485 serial inactivity has been exceeded. Optional protection functions Ground fault The optional Ground fault/ RTD card allows the user to configure the soft starter to trip if ground fault exceeds a specified level while the motor is running. Ground fault is a dynamic trip based on phase current measurements every half-cycle. Quick start set-up The EMX3 has been designed for ease of use, and the userfriendly menu is no exception. A quick setup guide helps you configure the starter for common applications by suggesting a typical setting, which you can then fine tune to suit your needs. Real language in real time The EMX3 gives real-language feedback messages instead of the usual alarm codes. With real-time metering displays and a 99-place event log recording time-stamped details of operation and performance, it has never been easier to track how your motor is behaving. Remote mounting keypad Control pushbuttons, fault and status information available from the EMX3 can be brought out to the cubicle door via the remote mounting keypad option. RTD inputs The optional Ground fault/rtd card allows the user to connect up to six PT100 RTD directly to the EMX3. This feature enables the EMX3 to measure the temperature of the RTDs and trip if overheating is detected. Trip levels are user programmed. EMX3 specialist features Graphical display In many cases we ve done away with language altogether, using real-time graphs of motor operating performance and current to quickly and clearly illustrate exactly how your motor is performing. Metering and monitoring EMX3 delivers an extensive range of information to replace an additional powermeter. These include motor temperature, current data, motor power, last start information, date and time, performance graph, SCR conduction, trip log and the userprogrammable screen For further information please contact Sales 1300 NHP NHP or visit nhp.com.au GST not included

16 EMX3 series overview Simulations The EMX3 simulation functions let you test the soft starter s operation, external control circuits and associated equipment without connecting the soft starter to line voltage or a motor. The EMX3 has three simulation modes: Run simulation: simulates a motor starting, running and stopping to ensure correct installation. Protection simulation: simulates activation of each protection mechanism to confirm correct protection response. Signaling simulation: simulates output signaling. Emergency run operation Emergency Run is controlled by a two wire circuit connected to Input A (terminals C53-C54). Closing Input A causes the EMX3 to run the motor and ignore user specified trip conditions. This is useful when the cost of lost production out-weighs the potential cost of further equipment damage. Unique wiring loom Using the EMX s unique and flexible cable ways, cables can be efficiently organised for wiring from either the top, left or from below. Adjustable power terminals The bus bars on models EMX3-030C ~ EMX3-100C can be adjusted for top and bottom input and output giving four options to ease installation. This flexibility allows you optimisation of your switchboard layout. Optional accessories Optional accessories for the EMX3 include the following: Communication modules enabling the soft starter to be controlled by protocols such as DeviceNet, ProfiBus and Modbus RTU USB module enables communication between your PC and EMX3 via Win-Master software. Win-master is available free of charge. I/O cards giving an added 2 x inputs, 3 x relay outputs, and 1 x analogue input RTD and Ground fault card providing x PT100 RTD inputs 1 x ground fault input Removable terminal blocks Installation is easy with plug-in control terminal blocks, simply unplug each block, complete the wiring and re-insert the block. Catalogue Number construction The EMX3 is available with a variety of options and formats to ensure individual user s requirements are met.
