3 2015 Corn Hybrid Performance Test General Information: The 2015 Corn Hybrid Performance Tests were conducted in four different counties in south central Kentucky: Logan (Adairville), Warren (Bowling Green), Christian (Gracey), and Todd (Trenton). A test was also conducted in Gibson County (Trenton), Tennessee and Mississippi County (Charleston), MO. Wheat Tech will typically have a hybrid performance test in each of the previously stated counties in order to encompass the range of corn growing acres that are consulted on. This is the first year for the Mississippi county test, and we will be continuing to conduct corn trials there in the future. Hybrids were separated into three maturity categories: early ( 111 days), medium ( days) and late ( 115 days). There were a total of 85 different hybrids tested this year at all the KY locations, with 24 in the early group, 36 in the medium group, and 25 in the late group. There were a total of 66 hybrids tested at the TN location, with 18 in the early group, 27 in the medium group, and 21 in the late group. The newly added MO location had a total of 43 hybrids, with 8 in the early group, 17 in the medium, and 18 in the late. The plots were planted in two rows by 40 feet with a Wintersteiger vacuum planter. They were also set up in a split block design by maturity group, with four replications. Tests were conducted using 30 inch row spacing. All tests were planted at 30,000 seeds per acre. All pre and post sprays were conducted by Wheat Tech. Locations were harvested using a Kincaid 8-XP combine with a HarvestMaster Classic GrainGage HM800. Nitrogen rates varied at each location depending on conditions, soil type, and pre-plant fertilizer. Certain methods and rates were used to emulate grower situations and rates. A rate of 200 lbs N/a was put on the TN location, 140 lbs N/a was applied at the Christian County and Todd County test, 150 lbs N/a was applied at Logan County test, and the MO location had 15 lbs N/a added into the burndown application followed by 140 lbs N/a post. The CC and LC locations had nitrogen applied top-dressed through our tractor sprayer with streambars, and Agrotain Ultra at a rate of 1.5 qt/ton of solution was tank mixed. TN, LC, and MO were all applied side dressed post emerge. In collaboration with Western Kentucky University, Wheat Tech was able to place the Warren County hybrid performance test on their farm. Unfortunately, on June 26, 2015 a severe thunderstorm came through Bowling Green. According to the KY Warren County Mesonet website, the 3-second max wind speed for the storm was 92.1 mph. Hail damage was also reported along with the extreme wind speeds. The combination of the two left the location with many damaged or destroyed corn plots. The majority of the corn plants were at growth stage R2 at the time of the storm. After thoroughly analyzing the damage, the decision was made to abandon the entire location. Growing Season: Spring of 2015 followed another harsh winter. On March 4, 2015 a severe winter storm would produce approximately 10 inches of snow throughout the area that encompasses all the corn plots. This storm also brought extremely cold temperatures. Fortunately, this winter blast was short lived, and within about 2 weeks temperatures began to increase and corn planting would not be delayed. Corn planting in the spring of 2015 can be described in a single word, wet. Planting began on April 1, 2015, and no other plots were planted for the next 23 days. According to our WatchDog weather station, located in Auburn, KY, 8.12 inches of rainfall were recorded within those 23 days. Planting would resume on April 24, 2015, and conditions were still marginal. Although getting corn into the ground was a difficult challenge this year, the rainfall managed to continue through about the first week of August. The adequate amounts of rain combined with average high temperatures created an environment for above average yields. The mean for the five location average was bu/a, and several growers were able to maintain a farm average of 200 bu/a despite the areas that did not survive the heavy amount of rainfall. Although the moisture brought higher yields, it also brought plenty of disease pressure. Todd, Christian, and Gibson county plots were rated for Grey Leaf Spot and Southern Rust. The Southern Rust pressure increased tremendously later in the growing season, while the Grey Leaf Spot began to affect the plots earlier. 1
4 Data Interpretation: The tables on the following pages have been prepared with the entries listed in order of performance, the highest-yielding entry being listed first. All yields presented have been adjusted to 15.5% moisture. At the bottom of the tables are three different values: LSD (Least Significant Difference), CV (Coefficient of Variation), and Grand Mean. The mean yields of any two varieties being compared must differ by at least the LSD amount shown to be considered different in yielding ability at the 5% level of probability of significance. CV is a measure of the error variability found within each experiment. It is the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean. Grand Mean is the mean of all values in the group.
