Introduction CADD-Solis Infusion Pump Information for Parents Your child has been started on an infusion using the CADD-Solis pump. Your nurse specialist will have explained the reasons for starting the pump, and shown you what the pump looks like and how to use the pump. This is a portable pump which means your child does not necessarily have to stay in hospital and may be cared for at home so they can go out as they are able. This leaflet will explain: 1. Diagram and explanation of the pump features 2. Key features of the pump 3. Care of the pump 4. Power source for the pump 5. How to give a PCA dose 6. Attaching and detaching the PCA dose cord 7. Pump alarms and what to do 8. Managing Air in Line 9. How to read information from the pump 10. Who to contact if you have any concerns about the pump and its use
CADD-Solis Infusion Pump 1. Diagram and Pump features 1. Status bar Colour coded: green indicates that the pump is running, red indicates that the pump has stopped. 2. Protocol title bar Displays the name of the drug that is currently running. 3. Infusion settings Displays the current rate of infusion and PCA dose 4. Takes you to the Reports screen by pressing the keypad button below. 5. Soft keypad - 6. CADD medication cassette reservoirs Keep medications safe and secure 7. Audible pump alarms Differentiated by colour and sound: red=high priority; amber=medium priority; blue=low priority 8. Keypad lock status for added patient safety 9. Drug concentration in mg per ml 10. Clinical task menu For use by professionals 11. Cassette latch Permits easy attachment of the CADD cassette 12. Scroll keys 13. PCA dose key No need for extra cord, especially if up and about 14. Remote PCA dose cord 2
2. Key Features of the pump This pump will safely deliver the medication your child needs continuously throughout the day and night The pump cassette can last for up to one week without needing to be changed. There is a PCA (patient controlled analgesia) facility on the pump which will be activated if needed for your child. This allows you or your child to press a button on the pump (or use a lead) to give an extra dose of medication if needed. The pump has been safely programmed so that you would not be able to accidentally give your child too much medication. This will be explained to you further by the nurse specialist. 3. Care of the pump The pump is not waterproof so it is important that it is protected from any fluids. If it does get splashed, use a clean tissue or towel to dry the pump. Check the screen to make sure the pump is still running as it should. Contact us if you are worried at any time. (Contact details at the end of this leaflet) If the pump is accidentally dropped, check the screen that the pump is still running and check the medication cassette for any leaks or cracks. Contact us if you are concerned. 4. Power Source for the Pump The battery compartment opens at the top of the pump (see picture).the pump has a rechargeable battery pack. We recommend using the rechargeable battery pack and advise you to place the pump on charge every night using the mains AC adapter provided. 4 AA Alkaline batteries can also be used in place of the rechargeable battery pack. We will provide you with spare disposable batteries, which should always be available as a back up wherever your child is. If you need to use the disposable batteries, the battery life will depend on how the pump is being used. The pump will alarm in advance as the battery power gets low so you will have time to change the batteries before the pump 3
stops working. You will also see a visual sign of a battery on the top right hand side of the screen. This will give you a visual display of the battery life. Instructions for changing the Disposable Batteries 1. Press the stop/start button (red/green) to stop the pump. 2. Pump will read stop pump? 3. Press yes (top right key as you are looking at it). The screen will read pump is stopping and will stop. There is a red bar at the top of the screen which will read stopped. 4. Turn the pump off by pressing the button on the right side of the screen 5. The screen will read Power Down? press yes 6. Using your fingers or a coin turn the knob on the battery compartment door (at the top of the pump) counter-clockwise to open. 7. Replace the batteries, matching the + and - signs on the pump. 8. Close the battery door and using your fingers or a coin, turn the knob on the battery door clockwise to lock. Restarting the pump 1. Press and hold the power switch on the right side of the pump. The pump will start its power up sequence and self test. This will be followed quickly by a series of six audible beeps. 2. The display will then read do you want to start a new patient? It is very important that you select No (left hand key). 3. The display will revert to the home screen. 4. Press the stop/start button (green and red) to start the pump. 5. The pump will read start pump? 6. Press yes ( key on right hand side) 7. The pump should now be running - the bar at the top of the pump will be green and there will also be a green flashing indicator light (top left of screen) to let you know that the pump is running. 4
Attaching the AC Adaptor to the pump for charging the rechargeable battery pack only Using the AC adaptor provided, attach to the second input point marked 7V on the left hand side of the pump (not the one in the blue square). When attached and plugged in to a power socket which is switched on, a blue light will illuminate next to the 7V input point to let you know that the pump is on charge. 5. How to give a PCA dose There are two ways to do this, depending on preference: When the PCA remote dose cord is in use 1. Press the blue button on the PCA dose cord. If a dose is available, the dose will be administered and you will be able to hear a swirling noise while the dose is being delivered. The green bar at the top of the home screen will read PCA Dosing whilst the dose is being delivered. 2. If the blue button on the PCA dose cord is pressed within the lock out time, a PCA dose will not be available. The message on the pump will read PCA dose not available. Currently locked out. When the PCA dose key is in use 1. Press the blue PCA dose button on the keypad. You will hear a swirling noise while the dose is being delivered. The green bar at the top of the home screen will read PCA Dosing whilst the dose is being delivered. 2. If the blue PCA button on the pump is pressed within the lock out time, a PCA dose will not be available. The message on the pump will read PCA dose not available. Currently locked out If the dose was not available, you will be able to try again as many times as you want, but a dose will not be delivered until the lock out time is over. If the PCA dose cord is attached, a green indicator light will flash to let you know that a dose is available if required. If the PCA Dose Key is in use, there is not a method of knowing if another PCA dose is available other than by the clock. 5
6. Attaching and detaching the PCA Dose Cord Attach the PCA Dose Cord by making sure the connection points are carefully aligned. You will be shown how to do this when the pump is initially set up. You do not need to press any button at this time unless a PCA dose is required. If you want to remove the PCA Dose cord (because you want to go out, for example) you will need to: 1. Remove the cord from the pump. A medium priority alarm will sound and the display background becomes amber. 2. Press acknowledge (left hand button) and the pump will revert back to the home screen and continue to run as normal. 7. Pump Alarms and what to do There are a number of alarms produced by the pump. Many of the alarms will give you the option to acknowledge or silence. Acknowledging the alarm will clear it from the screen, silencing it will keep it on the screen; the alarm will silence for two minutes and then sound again. This will continue until the alarm is acknowledged or resolved. High Priority Alarm: If the pump is running, and this alarm is activated, the pump will stop and the screen on the pump will turn red. The alarm must be acknowledged by pressing a key on the pump (No 5 on the diagram at the front of this booklet). The pump will then need to be started again (using the stop/start (red/green) button). As long as the condition that triggered the pump is resolved (for example the battery was depleted and needed replacing) Medium Priority Alarm: This alarm will not stop the pump if it is running; however the screen on the pump will turn amber until it is acknowledged. For example, when detaching the PCA remote dose cord, an alarm will sound which must be acknowledged by pressing the top left hand key (No 5 on diagram at the front of this booklet). Once this is done the pump will revert back to the home screen. Low Priority Alarm: This alarm will not stop the pump; it is accompanied by a blue screen. The alarm will automatically clear after five seconds if it is not acknowledged, as long as the condition that triggered the alarm is resolved. 6
For example, disconnecting the AC Adaptor from the pump would trigger such an alarm, as would a low battery. 8. Managing Air in line The pump has an air detector within its mechanism of action. Sometimes very small air bubbles, which would not be of concern, collect in the tubing and trigger an alarm. If this happens, a high priority alarm will sound. The pump will stop and the display on the screen will be red. The following steps will guide you through what to do if this occurs; 1. High priority alarm triggered, pump stops and screen reads; Air in Line Detected 2. Press Acknowledge 3. Screen reads prime tubing 4. Press no 5. Screen reads Start Pump 6. Press yes 7. The pump will either restart, meaning the problem is resolved or the screen will read cannot start pump with air in line.. if this is the message on the screen; press acknowledge and call the nurse specialist for further support. We will then guide you through what to do next. 9. How to read information from the pump When the pump is running the screen will become blank after thirty seconds. This is to preserve battery life. Press the select key to light up the display. You will see the home screen on display, with a green status bar at the top of 7
the pump indicating that the pump is running. The screen will look as illustrated on the picture at the beginning of this leaflet. Recording information from the Home Screen To observe how much PCA medication your child is requiring and to check that the pump continues to deliver your child s medication appropriately we will ask you to read the home screen twice a day, everyday and write the readings onto a record sheet. The nurse specialist will contact you twice daily to do this. 1. On the home screen the continuous rate will be highlighted read and record the continuous rate. 2. Press the key to the left of the keypad, where it reads reports 3. The display will read select report. The given and PCA Dose counters will be highlighted. Press select to view the report. 4. The first line will read, Given and PCA Dose counters 5. Press select to view this. 6. The next screen will display the total number of PCA doses given. 7. Please read and write down (on the record sheet you have been given) the following numbers: PCA doses given PCA doses attempted 8. Press the back key (top left hand key) twice to return to the home screen 8
