1 Station 1: Registration 2-3 People Welcome Teams! CMUD rep to do Safety Information Check In Teams Assign Team/Tower Number Photograph Team with Tower Hand out T-shirts/Goody Bags Hand out Certificate Hand Out Paper Score Card w/clipboard Pre-Registered Teams List Tower Number Card Certificates of Participation Digital Camera T-Shirts Name Tags Tape Blank Score Cards Clipboards

2 Station 2: Materials 2 People Check materials list and receipts for each item used on the tower Confirms students understand the value of cost effective engineering If no list or receipts, assign max penalty points (5) on their score card Recycled items are encouraged & include any material found around the student s home or an item not purchased intentionally for their model construction, i.e. scrap wood, milk containers Recycled items should still be listed on materials sheet Adhesives and decorations such as paint, glue, or glitter do not need to be accounted for Calculators

3 Station 3: Subjective Judging 3 People Judge the tower based on subjective categories to determine the overall Design Ingenuity: o Craftsmanship: is the model sturdy, do the parts fit together nicely? o Imagination: is the design or materials unique? o Artistic Merit: is the design a creative idea, color or theme? Each judge assesses independently & assigns a point value for each category o 1-best score o 6-poorest score

4 Station 4: Dimensions 2 People per Setup Measure Heights & Record on Score Card: o Base of Tower to Bottom of Tank > 1.5 o Base of Tower to Hydraulic Height < 2.5 o Hydraulic Height = Base of Tower to Point on the Tank Where the Tower Cannot Hold Any More Water/Overflows Measure Base Area with Templates < 1 sq ft (Yes or No) Measure Dry Weight on the Scale Measure Weight with Water on the Scale: o Max volume allowed = 2.5 gallons which includes storage in their riser pipe o Min volume allowed = 1 gallon o Place quick connect valve into the 3/8 OD connector on the tower before filling o Fill tower with water using funnel or smaller container to fill tower until overflowing or tower falling over o Record weight o Drain Tape Measure or Yard Stick Scales Plastic Over Scales If inside, container to capture water Funnels

5 Buckets with Water Towels 3/8 OD Shut Off Valves with Quick Connect and 3/8 OD Tubing Cups or small buckets Extra pump & tubing Batteries or extension cords for scales 1 sq ft Templates Scissors and drill (in case no vent or lid) Duct tape Mop

6 Station 5: Hydraulic Testing 2 People per Setup Test amount of time needed for each model to fill & drain 1 gallon of water = Hydraulic Efficiency Faster = More Efficient = Lower Score 1 person times with stop watch 1 person controls the pumps Confirm 3/8 OD connector (take deductions if needed) Confirm vent/lid (take deductions if needed) Note leakage (take deductions if needed) Pump Setup: o Tape rulers to inside of buckets o Confirm distance for 1 gallon of water, i.e. every 2 = 1 gallon o Fill bucket with water o Submerge pump in water with tubing connections Priming Step (if needed): o If the tower has indentations/depressions that hold water, pump water to fill the indentations and then turn pump off & follow remaining steps to ensure 1 gallon of water is being pumped into the tower Pumping: o Start pump & stop watch at the same time o Time Keeper looks into the tower & will tell Pump Operator MARK when water enters the tank of the tower o When Time Keeper says MARK the Pump Operator will read and mentally note the water level on the ruler

7 o The Pump Operator will run the pump until the water level drops the predetermined equivalent for the buckets being used (i.e. 2 ) which indicates that 1 gallon of water has entered the tower o Once the water level has dropped the predetermined inches, the Pump Operator should turn the pump off and drain the tower, the stop watch remains running during the drain time o Once the tower is drained the Pump Operator says STOP, the Time Keeper stops the watch and records the time on the score card o Repeat these steps a second time and take the average o If there are major discrepancies between the two recorded times, repeat a third time to verify no human error 5 gallon buckets Water Pumps 3/8 OD plastic tubing Power strips Extension cords Quick connect pieces Rulers (plastic for inside buckets) Stop watches Duct tape Towels Mop

8 Station 6: Data Entry 2 or More People (more to double-check entries) Become familiar with the spreadsheet & score cards prior to the contest Enter scores into spreadsheet from each team s score cards Double-check entries & calculations Announce Winners! Thank sponsors, thank everyone for attending & spread the word for next year! If teams want to leave their tower behind for display purposes, we will take them Laptops with copy of tally sheet

9 Other Items: 1st Annual Charlotte Model Water Tower Competition 1 Volunteer to help in parking lot, ensure parking in correct spots & direct teams to front door 1 CMUD Employee to review Safety Information at Registration table 1-2 CMUD Emplyees to host in Blue Planet-answer questions, guide students through 1 Volunteer as event photographer Schedule Volunteer/Judges Conference Call 1 week prior to Event Signs for main road turns (yard sale size signs) Station/Table Signs Trophies Money orders from NC AWWA-WEA office for winners Optional: WiFi/Hotspot & laptop at each station to enter scores in spreadsheet Snacks/water/soda
