1 CLASS NEWS 10/2021 New Lloyd s Register requirements for NDE acceptance criteria, and inclusion of Advanced NDE Methods. 28 June 2021 Applicability: shipbuilders and steel manufacturers. Amendments are being made to Lloyd s Register s Rules to include the stipulations of two newly published Unified Requirements from the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) regarding non-destruction examination (NDE). The following come into force on 1 July 2021: 1. UR W33 - Non-destructive testing of ship hull steel welds 2. UR W34 - Advanced non-destructive testing of materials and welds The impact on LR s Rules (mainly contained within Lloyd s Register s Rules for the Manufacture, Testing and Certification of Materials) are summarised as follows: (a) minor changes to existing NDE acceptance criteria for conventional NDE methods (b) new detailed requirements for the following advanced NDE methods: Digital Radiography PAUT (Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing) TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction) (c) acceptance criteria for the application of the advanced NDE methods (d) The application of these advanced methods requires qualification to determine the suitability and the effectiveness of the method for use on LR Class vessels. Detailed requirements for qualification are included within the Rules update.
