12 HIN N SHKLE hain or wire rope may be used to suspend either cylindrical or rectangular fenders. ut chain is more corrosion resistant than wire rope. hain provides more bearing surface on the I.. of the fender, thus reducing tear potential at the ends of the fender. Recommended chain for different sizes: 1. 1/2 chain for cylindrical fenders up to and including 8 O X 4 I /8 chain used for 10 O X 5 up to and including 18 x 9 size (some applications of 18 x 9 based on conditions will use heavier chain). 3. 3/4 chain used for 18 x 9 to 24 x 12 fender. TYPIL SHKLE The long link chain shown in the specifications below does not restrict fender deflection as much as heavier, shorter link chain would. Experience indicates that ultimate breaking strength of chain is more important than its shock load ability. Mounting eyebolts so they do not project beyond the dock face will prevent restricting fender deflection. On old docks, pad eyes may be used to limit projection from the dock face. The shackle should be high strength, with a greater ultimate strength than that of the chain being used. e recommend a safety anchor pin shackle with an alloy pin, one size larger than the chain being used. These chain and alloy shackle selections permit the eye of the shackle to pass through the chain s long link; simplifying installation.
