5 General The Cat C8.7 is an E-Rated, seawater aftercooled (SWAC), inline 6 cylinder, marine diesel engine; it is turbo-supercharged with common rail fuel injection. 10 Installation Factors Affecting Engine Performance Engine performance is affected by various installation and environmental factors; there is also an engine protection strategy in place to protect engine components. These performance factors include: Engine inlet air temp Engine exhaust gas temperature and back pressure Raw water restriction and temperature Fuel temperature and pressure Installation angle The engine monitoring system parameters and derate details are available on SISweb in the troubleshooting guide section. Engine Inlet Air Temperature Air Intake and Ventilation Engine air inlet temperatures (measured at the on-engine sensor) greater than 45 deg C (113 deg F), as it is one of the contributors to a higher inlet manifold temperature, may cause the engine to derate. Engine radiant heat rejection and engine air consumption information is available on TMI and sizing information is available in the publications below: LEBW4969, Air Intake System LEBW4971, Engine Room Ventilation Exhaust Gas Back Pressure Exhaust system back pressure limits are available on TMI and general guidelines are available in publication LEBW4970, Exhaust System. Raw Water Restriction and Temperature Raw water restriction and temperature limits are available on TMI and general guidelines are available in publication LEBW4978, Cooling System. INSTALLATION FACTORS 6
11 Fuel Temperature and Pressure Fuel System The system includes an off-engine electric priming pump in series with the fuel supply and prior to the engine inlet. (See Electric Fuel Priming Pump in this guide). The system includes an on-engine fuel cooler that is located after the transfer pump and before the fuel filter. Fuel Temperature Fuel inlet temperatures greater than 50 deg C (122 deg F) may cause a performance reduction. Limits are available on TMI and general guidelines are available in publication LEBW4976, Fuel System. Fuel Supply and Return Pressure Fuel Supply Pressure Fuel supply restriction limits are available on TMI and general guidelines are available in publication LEBW4976, Fuel System. Fuel inlet restriction limit: 30 kpa (8.8 in Hg)* Fuel restriction across the priming pump and clean filter: 15 kpa (4.3 in Hg) * Fuel inlet restriction limit is measured by the on-engine low pressure fuel system pressure sensor. The low pressure fuel system should be sized for a maximum inlet fuel flow of 220 liters per hour (58 US gallons per hour). This information is available in TMI. Restriction should be minimized to increase filter life and avoid nuisance alarms. Restriction can be minimized by reducing the number of fittings in the system, reducing the total supply line length, and increasing the supply line internal diameter and fitting size. Increased restriction will reduce filter life. The following are general recommendations: Line sizes should be -10 [15.9 mm (5/8 in)] internal diameter or larger. Marine Fuel Line USCG/SAE J1527 and ISO 7840 Type. 90 degree fittings should be avoided where possible. Fittings should not be more restrictive than the line diameter. Additional components should be avoided or oversized to avoid additional restriction. Fuel Return Pressure Fuel return restriction limits are available on TMI and general guidelines are available in publication LEBW4976, Fuel System. The low pressure fuel system should be sized for a maximum return fuel flow 125 liters per hour (33 US gallons per hour). INSTALLATION FACTORS 7
12 Engine Installation Mounting and Alignment General mounting and alignment guidelines are available in publications LEBW4974, Mounting and LEBW4975, Alignment. Installation Angle Installation angle limits are available on TMI in the physical data. The engine is shipped with an engine oil level gauge that is pre-calibrated for a 0 degree installation angle. The engine oil level gauge must be calibrated for a installation angle that is not 0 degree; reference SISWeb in the OMM section for additional information. Electrical Certain optional customer supplied switches can be wired differently than some current Cat products; review electrical schematic, UENR5136, for wiring details. The C8.7 has a terminating resistor built into the ECM. This affects MSCS (Multi-Station Control System) installation. Reference the J1939 CAN Network section of publication LEGM2735, MSCS A&I Guide, for more information. Current key switch panel alarms and warning lights will not function. Only the key on and ignition functions are functional. Troll mode is not supported by engine software. View publication LEBW , Starting Systems, for battery cable sizing. Find out the size of the starter motor cable connection. Starter motor cable connection sizing can be found on the engine installation drawings. Jacket Water The jacket water expansion tank pressure cap is a one-way pressure relief valve. A customer supplied coolant recovery bottle (over flow tank) can be installed to contain coolant that evacuates the system, but it should not be filled or used as a level indicator. Optional low level coolant level sensors are available. On/Off jacket water heater service parts will be available via Morton. ENGINE INSTALLATION 8 Electric Fuel Priming Pump The engine has a shipped loose electric fuel priming pump and filter that is required to be installed in the low pressure fuel supply system. The priming pump must be installed as close to the fuel tank outlet port as possible. A water-in-fuel sensor is also shipped loose and must be installed in the fuel filter. Be sure that the pump is located to allow servicing of the filter and sensor. Drawings can be retrieved from the Engine Drawing Design Center. The electric fuel priming pump is powered through an ECM controlled relay. The relay should be mounted close to the priming pump. A 3 meter (10 feet) harness, connected near the front of the engine valve cover, is available to aid in
13 installation. Reference UENR5136 schematic, which is available in SISWeb for additional information. Review Electronic Control System Component media UENR4352. No additional filtration and water separation system is required. Exhaust Connections The maximum allowable weight on the turbocharger exhaust connection is 0 Kg (0 lb). The maximum allowable bending moment on the turbocharger exhaust flange is 0 Nm. General guidelines are available in publication LEBW4970, Exhaust System. The turbocharger turbine outlet flange has special features that should be considered when ordering exhaust risers; reference the Engine Drawing Design Center. Transmission Gear Oil Cooler The engine will be shipped with transmission oil inlet and outlet adapter connectors shown on Figure 5, which provides one of the ways of connecting the transmission hydraulic hose. Figure 5: Transmission Gear Oil Connections The OEM can also connect directly to the transmission gear oil cooler and not use those adapters if they choose not to. Below are two options of connecting the transmission hydraulic hoses to the gear oil cooler. ENGINE INSTALLATION 9
14 Transmission Gear Oil Cooler Connections Adapter Connections Caterpillar supplies several options that are available for purchase from the Cat Dealer to connect to the fitting port addressed in Figure 5. Shown in Figure 7. The OEM may choose the BSPP port or convert it to JIC fitting for example by using the following part numbers: o 6V-3526 (1/2 BSPP to 7/8-14 UNF 37 deg flare) o 6V-0407 o-ring seal.
