35 eport: Air France B772 over Atlantic on Dec 9th 2010, lithium battery fire in cabin y Simon Hradecky, created Friday, Feb21st :56Z, last updated Friday, Feb 1st :56Z n Air France Boeing , registration F GSPK performing flight AF 681 (dep Air France B777 Lithium Battery Fire ec 8th) from Atlanta,GA (USA) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) with 219 assengers, was enroute at FL380 over the Atlantic Ocean near Ireland about 90 inutes prior to estimated landing in Paris when cabin crew noticed an electrical urning smell near passenger seat 4F. Cabin crew disconnected power from the nflight entertainment system, removed the seat cover fromseat 4F, saw open lames and doused the fire with water. After the fire was identified positively xtinguished the captain decided tocontinue the flight to Paris, where the aircraft anded safely. he French BEA released their final report in French concluding the cause and earned lessonsfromthis incident were: ire in the cabin due to a Lithium battery, that fell into the seat mechanism. The attery was crushed causing an internal short circuit and heat that resulted in fire. hedisconnection of power from the inflight entertainment system before anything lse is an effective protection against risks associated with many other seats sharing he equipment. abin crew subsequently extinguished the fire bypouring water over thefire. This ater extinguished the flames and cooled the battery, however, the water could ave caused increased intensity of fire and could have made it much more difficult o put the fire out due to hydrogen being released by the reduction of Lithium in ater. new procedure introduced by Air France advocating the initial use of Halogen xtinguishers solves this problem but introduces the use of a gas harmful to health, he use of which could be especially dangerous in the cockpit. n the USA the FAA uses a different procedure recommending operators to isolate lectrical power, then extinguish the flames with Halon or water,then coolthe unit o stop internal reactions. There is no universal procedure established to extinguish ires in cockpit or cabin. he BEA reported that the seat in business class was electrically operated. ollowing the event a Lithium battery capable of delivering of 1Ah, 5V at 500mA, sed ina personal electronic device by a passenger, was found entangled in the seat echanism. The battery showed signs of fire. It is possible that the batterry slid ehind the seat cover into the seat mechanism via the arm rest or the side seat.

41 SAFO Supplement (2) Battery Pack (Multiple Larger) Lithium ion Cells. Laptop computers and other battery operated devices are often powered by battery packs using multiple larger lithium ion battery cells. The individual cells are not visible and are encased in a plastic housing. Fighting a Fire Involving Lithium Batteries The technique for fighting a fire involving lithium batteries is the same, regardless if the battery is a disposable or rechargeable lithium battery or battery pack. Relocate passengers away from the device. Utilize a Halon, Halon replacement, or water fire extinguisher to prevent the spread of the fire to adjacent battery cells and materials. Pour water, or other non alcoholic liquid, from any available source over the cells immediately after knockdown or extinguishment of the fire. Only water or other non alcoholic liquid can provide sufficient cooling to prevent re ignition and/or propagation of the fire to adjacent batteries. Water, though it may react with the tiny amount of lithium metal found in a disposable battery, is most effective at cooling remaining cells, stopping thermal runaway and preventing additional flare ups. Significant cooling is needed to prevent the spread of fire to additional cells in a battery pack.
