10 OPERATION The operator is responsible for the safe operation of this pulverizer. The operator must be properly trained. Operators should be familiar with the equipment, the tractor, and all safety practices before starting operation. Read the safety rules and safety decals on pages 4 through 7. WARNING Check that all hardware is properly installed and secured. Check all lubrication points and grease as instructed in Lubrication Information, page 10. Make sure tractor ROPS or ROPS CAB and seat belt are in good condition. Keep seat belt securely fastened during operation. Power unit must be equipped with ROPS or ROPS cab and seat belt. Keep seat belt securely fastened. Falling off power unit can result in death from being run over or crushed. Keep foldable ROPS system in locked up position at all times. Stay clear of all moving parts. Stop power unit and equipment immediately upon striking an obstruction. Turn off engine, remove key, inspect, and repair any damage before resuming operation. Always wear relatively tight and belted clothing to avoid getting caught in moving parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protective equipment for eyes, hair, hands, hearing, and head; and respirator or filter mask where appropriate. PRE-OPERATION CHECK LIST (OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITY) CAUTION Review and follow all safety rules and safety decal instructions on pages 4 through 7. Check that equipment is properly and securely attached to tractor. Check that all safety decals are installed and in good condition. Replace if damaged. GENERAL INFORMATION The pulverizer is designed to immediately follow rough grading by a motor grader or bulldozer. The pulverizer is also an excellent companion tool to a rollover, boxtype scraper or utility blade for the purpose of scarifying hard clay or loamy soils. The pulverizer may be used with either constant draft control or implement position control stops. Normally, it is better to use implement position control during the initial portion of the job, especially when the pulverizer is operated in reverse. When the finished grade becomes more established, switching to control draft will speed up the work. Experiment with both settings to determine the best method for your particular application. ATTACHING PULVERIZER TO TRACTOR 1. Place the pulverizer on a level, dry area, positioned behind the tractor. Connect pulverizer mounting pins to tractor lower arms. 2. Secure mounting pins to lift arms with 7/16 x 1-3/4 lynch pins. 3. Connect the tractor top link to the pulverizer upper mast. NOTE: Initial adjustment of the top link must be made on a level surface. 4. Rest scarifier teeth on the ground and level the pulverizer by extending or retracting the top link. 5. Carefully operate the pulverizer through the tractor s full lift range, making sure pulverizer does not come into contact with any tractor component. Do not allow riders. 6. Adjust top link if necessary. 8 Operation WPMAN0146 (Rev. 11/28/2005)

11 ADJUSTING TOP LINK Top link adjustment is critical to the pulverizer s performance. The unit can be pitched either forward or rearward, depending on the soil conditions and job requirements. You will need to experiment to determine the best setting for the job being performed. For normal conditions, the pulverizer should be adjusted in a level position. This is especially useful when finish leveling and back filling. When excessive debris or hard scarifying conditions exist, pitch the pulverizer forward to optimize performance. Pitching the pulverizer rearward will optimize roller action and assist in over-seeding applications. ADJUSTING ROLLER SPRING The roller spring is set at the factory for normal operating conditions. For abnormal operating conditions, you may want to make the following adjustments: CONDITION Hard, tight clay Loamy, loose soil Loose, sandy soil SCARIFIER TEETH SETTING ADJUSTMENT Additional spring tension No adjustment Run with no tension on roller The 8" (20 cm) scarifying teeth are set at the factory at 3-1/2" (8.9 cm) below the H-beam flange. Do not lower the spikes, which will result in additional strain and cause excess scarifying before leveling and grading. OPERATING TIPS DIRECTION ACTION APPLICATION Forward Straight line General purpose pulverizing Reverse Long arcs Short, tight arcs Clod breaking & pulverizing Leveling Backfilling For seeding, dressing out soil during final seedbed preparation, and stockpiling debris into a single pile For hard, tight clay conditions; centrifugal force applied to roller pins will allow faster pulverizing Improves clod breaking, especially with SP1048 and SP1060 models Scarifier teeth promote even, ideal seedbed Light backfilling around foundations and sidewalks PROCEDURE ACTION ADVANTAGE Grading Grade at 90 angles Helps eliminate swells and valleys; establishes grade lines more quickly Humps Pull humps into low places close to the area being pulverized. Saves time WPMAN0146 (Rev. 11/28/2005) Operation 9

12 OWNER SERVICE The information in this section is written for operators who possess basic mechanical skills. If you need help, your dealer has trained service technicians available. For your protection, read and follow the safety information in this manual. WARNING NEVER GO UNDERNEATH EQUIPMENT. Never place any part of the body underneath equipment or between moveable parts even when the engine has been turned off. Hydraulic system leak-down, hydraulic system failures, mechanical failures, or movement of control levers can cause equipment to drop or rotate unexpectedly and cause severe injury or death. Service work does not require going underneath. Read Operator's Manual for service instructions or have service performed by a qualified dealer. Keep all persons away from operator control area while performing adjustments, service, or maintenance. WARNING Before dismounting power unit or performing any service or maintenance, follow these steps: disengage power to equipment, lower the 3-point hitch and all raised components to the ground, operate valve levers to release any hydraulic pressure, set parking brake, stop engine, remove key, and unfasten seat belt. CAUTION Always wear relatively tight and belted clothing to avoid getting caught in moving parts. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and protective equipment for eyes, hair, hands, hearing, and head; and respirator or filter mask where appropriate. LUBRICATION INFORMATION The roller bearings are self-aligning, dust-proof ball bearings. Use any good grade of multi-purpose grease and lubricate as needed. Figure 1 shows lubrication locations and frequency. Harsh conditions may require more frequent lubrication.. (BOTH SIDES) Figure 1. 13 CLEANING After Each Use Remove large debris such as clumps of dirt, grass, crop residue, etc. from machine. Inspect machine and replace worn or damaged parts. Replace any safety decals that are missing or not readable. Periodically or Before Extended Storage Clean large debris such as clumps of dirt, grass, crop residue, etc. from machine. Remove the remainder using a low-pressure water spray. 1. Be careful when spraying near scratched or torn safety decals or near edges of decals as water spray can peel decal off surface. 2. Be careful when spraying near chipped or scratched paint as water spray can lift paint. 3. If a pressure washer is used, follow the advice of the pressure washer manufacturer. Inspect machine and replace worn or damaged parts. Sand down scratches and the edges of areas of missing paint and coat with spray paint of matching color (purchase from your dealer). Replace any safety decals that are missing or not readable (supplied free by your dealer). See Safety Decals section for location drawing. NOTES WPMAN0146 (Rev. 11/15/2004) Owner Service 11
