1 In 1994 Graham Brown of Draycott returned a book to the parish of High Littleton, which had been passed on to him by a former icer of the parish, who had had it in his possession for many years. The cover of the book gives no indication of it s contents but it would appear that the lists of names almost certainly constitute the Electoral Rolls for the eleven years from 1920 to The pages are preprinted with columns headed Date, No., Name, Nature of Qualification and Residence and the names are listed in approximate alphabetical order year by year. Throughout the entire period covered by the book the column headed Nature of Qualification has been blank, as has the Residence column for the first two years. Before writing out each new year s list the clerk made pencil alterations to the old year s list for such things as deaths, departure from the parish, persons coming on or going the roll, changes of address and queries to be followed up. In transcribing these lists, the pencil alterations have been shown in italics, and corrections, corroborative information and assumptions made by the transcriber, have been shown in square brackets. Finally, it was considered that the details would be more usefully presented if all eleven years were combined into a single alphabetical list, thus enabling one to locate more easily and follow the movements of an individual over the period. Quite a few of the persons listed do not appear in the Parish Registers or Directories, so the Electoral Roll provides a rare bit of evidence of their residence in High Littleton. The numbers of persons on the Roll each year were as follows: The population of High Littleton, according to the Census, was 997 in 1921 and 866 in The Electoral Roll did not include young children, nor other denominations such as Methodists and Plymouth Brethren, who were active in the parish. On the other hand, not all those appearing on the Electoral Roll lived in High Littleton. Whilst some, who lived on the edges of Clutton, Farmborough, Timsbury and Paulton, may have felt that High Littleton church was more convenient than their own parish church, they may also have had long standing family connections with High Littleton. It is clear, however, that the Electoral Roll includes a good proportion of the adult population of High Littleton in the 1920s. Attached to the inside cover of the book are rules governing the election of Parochial Lay Representatives and on the first page the signatures of seventeen persons, who declared themselves qualified to vote. Although undated, one must deduce that the list is for the year No such list appears for any other years and one assumes that loose sheets of paper were used thereafter. Michael L. Browning
