Introduction The Loron family of Push Pull and Load Pusher attachments is designed to provide many hours of trouble-free, efficient service. Proper operating technique and common sense can help prevent damage to the product and the attachment and contribute to a safe working environment. The purpose of this Operator s Guide is to suggest ways you, as an operator, can learn the techniques and tricks professional operators use every day. Study this manual and familiarize yourself with the attachment. Learn to recognize normal operation and indicators of problems before they cause downtime. Take a few moments before your shift and look the attachment over to spot areas that may become problems later. This guide will show you what to look for as well as proper operating techniques. If you have any questions about procedures in this manual or about the attachment be sure to ask your supervisor or an experienced, trained operator before proceeding. 5

Daily Inspection Be sure truck is shut off prior to inspecting. 1. Check level of hydraulic oil in lift truck hydraulic reservoir. 2. Check for presence of hydraulic oil on attachment indicating possible leaks. 3. Visually inspect mounting points to be sure Push Pull is securely mounted to lift truck. 4. Inspect platens for damage and repair as necessary. 5. Check gripper shoe. 6. Actuate attachment functions. Report any unusual behavior to your supervisor. 8

Weekly Service Be sure truck is shut off prior to inspecting. 1. Check all hydraulic fittings, hoses, cylinders and valves for leakage. Repair or replace them as required. 2. Check hoses for pinch points and signs of wear. Replace badly worn hoses or any hoses with cuts, bulges or fraying. 3. All bolts should be checked and tightened as necessary. 4. Inspect all weld joints for signs of cracking paying close attention to the linkage group welds and all platen welds. 5. On side shifting units grease upper bronze slides as required. 6. Grease platen mounting pins. Check and tighten platen pin mounting bolts. 7. Grease slide block channels in base and push rack as required. 8. Check and tighten jaw and gripper shoe mounting bolts. Check gripper shoe for wear and replace if badly worn. 9. Inspect the gripper jaw area and make sure that pieces of slip sheet or other materials are not caught in the mechanism. 9

Load Handling Techniques In the following pages you will find a suggested method for basic load handling. Experienced operators often develop their own techniques as they gain confidence in the equipment and their ablities. The examples show how to handle a load using a Push Pull. A Load Pusher is a Push Pull without the gripper mechanism. To pick up a load with a Load Pusher, chisel under the load as you would using forks. Depositing a load is the same whether using a Load Pusher or a Push Pull. Special options such as hydraulically adjustable platens or sheet retaining functions can increase the versatility and productivity of your attachment, however, the basic operating techniques are as outlined in this guide. If your attachment is so equipped, have your supervisor or trainer show you how to operate the extra functions prior to operating the attachment on your own. 10

Picking Up a Load 1. As you approach the load fully extend the push rack. Tilt the mast forward, placing the gripper jaw under the tab of the slip sheet. The push rack automatically tilts back as it is extended so it will be parallel with the load when the mast is tilted forward. 2. As the lever is actuated the gripper will engage the tab and begin to draw the load onto the platens. Drive forward, coordinating the truck movement with the action of the Push Pull so the load is smoothly deposited onto the platens. Note: It is important to keep tension on the slip sheet tab and not attempt to chisel under the load as with conventional fork handling. 11

3. Lower the platens and tilt the mast back to the vertical position as the load nears the base. When the load is fully retracted the platens should be flat on the floor. 4. To transport the load, tilt the mast back and raise it slightly above the floor. 12

Picking Upper Tier Loads Note: Although similar to picking a load off the floor, upper tier loads require special techniques to keep from damaging the load below. Practice handling loads off the floor until you are comfortable and consistent operating in that mode before attempting higher tiers. 1. Approach the load with push rack extended and platens tilted back slightly, not tilted forward as you would handling a floor load. 2. Engage the tab of the slip sheet in the gripper and begin to draw the load onto the platens. Simultaneously drive the truck forward, keeping tension on the slip sheet tab. Raise the mast slightly to keep from damaging the load below as the load transfers onto the platens. 13

3. As the load is drawn onto the platens it may be necessary to raise the mast slightly, tilt it back or raise and tilt it to keep from damaging the load below. 4. Once the load is securely on the Push Pull, raise it slightly and back away from the stack, being careful to clear the load below. 5. To transport the load lower the mast to slightly above the floor, keeping it tilted back. 14

Depositing a Load 1. Position the truck, lower the platens near to the floor and tilt the mast forward to place the platen tips on the ground. 2. Actuate the truck lever to begin pushing the load off the platens. 3. As the load moves off the attachment back the truck away from the load. Coordinate the backing to keep the load tightly stacked and not tear or displace the slip sheet during the process. 4. Back clear of the load, raise the platens slightly off of the floor, tilt the mast back and retract the Push Pull. 15

Note: Depositing a load on an upper tier is very similar with the following cautions: 1. Less forward tilt is desirable when placing the load on the stack than used on the floor. 2. As the load transfers from the platens to the stack it may be necessary to lower the platens slightly to keep them close to the top of the load below. 16

Safety Precautions Please follow the safety precautions below to help prevent personal injury or damage: Prior to operating the lift truck and attachment you must receive proper training and certification as an operator. Know the capacity of the lift truck and the attachment. Handle loads weighing at or less than the lowest stated maximum capacity only. Truck and attachment may have different maximum capacities. When leaving truck lower attachment to floor, shut off truck, place transmission in gear (or park for automatics) and set hand brake. Transport loads near to the floor with mast tilted back. Obey speed limits. Drive only in designated aisles. Obey all stop and caution signs. Sound horn at blind spots. Back straight down inclines. Drive straight forward up inclines. If load obstructs view drive truck in reverse. If load is unstable or separating re-stack load prior to handling. 17

Always keep arms and legs within the confines of the operator s compartment. Keep others off of and out from under the attachment at all times whether empty or loaded. Operate the attachment only if it is in good condition and functioning normally. Use the gripper to grasp slip sheets only. Always keep hands, feet and other body parts clear of linkage and gripper mechanism when truck is turned on. Avoid pinch points. Use the attachment only as specified in this manual or as instructed by your supervisor or trainer. Mis-use can cause personal injury or damage the attachment or load. 18
