1 Weigh Station All Truck Stop! Computer 26 Do you ever wonder if truck would roll down a hill fater when they have a full load or when they are empty? Thi activity will help you tet a truck on a downhill ramp. You will dicover whether the truck goe fater when it i lighter or a you add weight to it load. OBJECTIVES In thi activity, you will Ue Go! Motion to meaure the time it take a truck to go down a ramp. Predict what will happen a you add weight to the truck. MATERIALS computer with Logger Lite oftware intalled Go! Motion motion detector ramp piece of paper everal text book making tape platic toy truck 3 roll of pennie calculator KEY QUESTION Doe adding weight to a truck caue it to go fater when it roll down a ramp? HYPOTHESIS The truck will go Thi mean it will take (fater or lower) a I add weight to it load. Evaluation copy PREDICTION (more or le) time to roll down the ramp. 2 Computer 26 PROCEDURE 1. Set up the Go! Motion for data collection. a. Make ure the Go! Motion i connected to the computer. b. Set the witch on the Go! Motion to the Normal etting a hown here. 2. Start Logger Lite on your computer. 3. Open the file for thi activity by doing the following: a. Click the Open button,. b. Open the folder called Elementary Science. c. Open the file called 26 Weigh Station. 4. Follow thee tep to et up a ramp at an 11 angle: a. Fold a piece of paper at the corner to form a 45 angle. b. Fold again to make a 22.5 angle, then a third time to get an angle. c. Ue thi paper to adjut the ramp to approximately an 11 angle. 5. Place another heavy book againt the low end of the board, a hown below. Thi book will top the truck. 6. Put a piece of making tape approximately 0.25 meter from the high end of the board. 7. Poition the Go! Motion o that the back of the Go! Motion i lined up with the back of the high end of the ramp. The detector (gold circle) hould be adjuted by tilting it o it face downhill (ee drawing below) Elementary Science with Vernier

3 Weigh Station All Truck Stop! 8. Collect data by doing the following: a. Place the rear wheel of the truck on the making tape a a tarting poition. b. Click to tart data collection. When you hear fat clicking, releae the car. c. If the truck run off the ramp or goe pat the book, put the truck at the tarting point and tart data collection again. 9. Click the Examine button,, on the toolbar. Move the moue to find the time of tart and time of top for the truck movement down the hill. Record the data in the Data Table below, then cloe the Examine box by clicking on the X in the corner of the box. Data Table Run Total ma added Time of tart Time of top Total run time = top tart time Average time for Run A & B 1A 1B 0 penny roll 2A 2B 1 penny roll 3A 3B 2 penny roll 4A 4B 3 penny roll 10. Subtract the tart time from the top time. Thi i the amount of time it took the truck to get down the ramp. Record thi value in the Total run time column. 11. After you have calculated the time it took for the truck to get down the ramp, delete thi run by chooing Clear All Data from the Data menu. 12. Repeat Step 8 11 for Run B. 13. Calculate the average time it took for the truck to get down the ramp. To calculate thi value, add together the two value in the Total run time column and then divide by 2 to get the average time. 14. Add one roll of pennie to the truck load and repeat Step Add another roll of pennie o that there are two roll of pennie on the truck and repeat Step 8 13 again. Elementary Science with Vernier 26-3
