3 SKILL SHEET # 1 Preventive Maintenance/Documentation Performance Evaluation: The evaluator shall verify the candidate has the ability to perform and document routine tests, inspections and servicing functions on the systems and components specified in the performance steps, so that the operational status of the vehicle is verified and deficiencies are reported. JPR: 4.2.1, Tasks: Ensure the operational status of the vehicle is verified and deficiencies are reported. The candidate, given a fire apparatus, its manufacturer s specifications, maintenance and inspection forms and policies and Instructor s Statement procedures of the jurisdiction, shall perform and document routine tests, inspections and servicing functions, so that the listed performance steps are completed. Equipment Required: Fire apparatus, manufacturer s specifications, maintenance and inspection forms, policies and procedures of the respective jurisdiction. 1. Identifies correct hand tools for use during inspection; uses appropriately. C 2. Inspects tires; sufficient tread and inflated to manufacturer s specifications C 3. Inspects coolant fluid level; fluid level is within manufacturer s recommendations. C 4. Inspects engine oil; fluid level within manufacturer s recommendations. C 5. Inspects belts for tightness and excessive wear. C 6. Inspects electrical system; all running and emergency lights are operational, electronic audible devices are operational. C 7. Inspects braking system for air/fluid leaks. 8. Inspects batteries as clean, corrosion free, and secured. 9. Inspects fuel level; fuel above ¾ tank 10. Inspects steering system linkage for wear, fluid level within manufacturer s specifications. C11. Inspects fluid level in transmission; fluid level within manufacturer s specifications. 12. Documents tests, inspections and servicing functions; reports deficiencies on the departmental maintenance and inspection forms. 13. Recognizes any system problems and corrects any deficiencies found. 9
4 SKILL SHEET # 2 Serpentine Exercise Performance Evaluation: The evaluator shall verify the candidate has the ability to maneuver a fire apparatus around obstructions on a roadway while moving forward and in reverse. JPR: Instructor s Statement Tasks: Maneuver through obstructions without stopping to change direction of travel or without striking obstructions. The candidate, given a spotter for backing and a roadway with obstructions, shall maneuver the fire apparatus in forward and r reverse so that the vehicle progresses through obstructions without stopping to change direction or striking an obstruction. Equipment Required: Roadway or simulated roadway, traffic cones, back up spotter, fire apparatus 1. Check and adjust driver s seat and mirrors as needed. C 2. Fasten enger and driver restraints before putting vehicle into motion. 3. Drives the apparatus in a straight line along the left side of course to begin. 4. Backs apparatus between markers; ing to the left of marker 1, right of marker 2, and left of marker 3. C 5. Does not stop the vehicle while backing. 6. Utilizes mirrors for backing. C 7. Utilizes spotter for backing. C 8. Does not strike marker while backing. 9. Drives the apparatus forward between the markers; ing to the right of marker 3, to the left of marker 2, and to the right of marker 1. C 10. Does not stop the vehicle while driving forward. C 11. Does not strike the marker(s) while driving forward. 7
5 SKILL SHEET # 3 Alley Dock Performance Evaluation: The evaluator shall verify the candidate has the ability to park the fire apparatus within a restricted area without having to stop and pull forward and without striking obstructions. JPR: Instructor s Statement Tasks: Park the fire apparatus within a restricted area, without readjusting or striking obstructions. The candidate, given a fire apparatus, a spotter, and restricted space, shall back the apparatus from the roadway into the restricted space so that the vehicle is parked within the area without having to stop and pull forward and without striking obstructions. Equipment Required: Fire apparatus, restricted space, traffic cones, back up spotter 1. Check and adjust driver s seat and vehicle mirrors as needed. C 2. Fasten driver and enger restraints before putting vehicle into motion. LEFT ALLEY DOCK 3. Passes barricades with the dock on the left. 4. Backs the apparatus using a left turn into restricted space. C 5. Stops apparatus without striking the dock. C 6. Does not strike any course markers. 7. Utilizes mirrors for backing. C 8. Utilizes spotter for backing. 9. Appropriately judges vehicle distance. RIGHT ALLEY DOCK 10. Passes the barricades with the dock on the right. 11. Backs the apparatus with a right turn into restricted space. C 12. Stops the apparatus without striking the dock. C 13. Does not strike any course markers. 14. Utilizes mirrors for backing. C 15. Utilizes spotter for backing. 16. Appropriately judges vehicle distance. 11
6 EVD SKILL SHEET # 4 Diminishing Clearance Performance Evaluation: The evaluator shall verify the candidate has the ability to move through areas of restricted horizontal and vertical clearances so that he or she accurately judges the ability of the vehicle to through the openings and so that no obstructions are struck. JPR: Instructor s Statement Tasks: Move a fire apparatus through areas of restricted horizontal and vertical clearances. The candidate, given a fire apparatus and a course of restricted horizontal and vertical clearances, shall maneuver a fire apparatus so that the performance steps below are completed. Equipment Required: fire apparatus, course with horizontal and vertical restricted clearance (props with a crossbar that can be placed at various heights can be used for vertical clearance skill training) 1. Checks and adjusts driver s seat and vehicle mirrors as needed. C 2. Fastens driver and enger safety restraints before putting vehicle into motion. HORIZONTAL CLEARANCE 3. Drives the apparatus through the diminishing lane in both forward and reverse. C 4. Does not touch course marker(s). C 5. Stops without any portion of the apparatus protruding beyond finish line. 6. Utilizes mirrors while moving. 7. Appropriately judges apparatus distance. 8. Uses a spotter. VERTICAL CLEARANCE 9. Drives the apparatus through the vertical cross bar prop in both forward and reverse. C 10. Does not strike the prop. 11. Utilizes mirrors while moving. 12. Appropriately judges apparatus distance. 13. Uses a spotter. 9
7 EVD SKILL SHEET # 5 Confined Space Turn Around Performance Evaluation: The evaluator shall verify the candidate has the ability to turn the vehicle 180 degrees within a confined space so that the vehicle is successfully turned without striking obstacles in the given space. JPR: Instructor s Statement Tasks: Turn a fire apparatus 180 degrees within a confined space. The candidate, given a fire apparatus and a confined area that requires the apparatus to be turned 180 degrees and a back up spotter, shall execute the task so that the listed performance steps are completed. Equipment Required: fire apparatus, restricted area, traffic cones, back up spotter 1. Checks and adjusts driver s seat and vehicle mirrors as needed. C 2. Fastens driver and enger safety restraints before putting vehicle into motion. 3. Maintains normal driving position. 4. Maneuvers apparatus into the area through an opening. 5. Turns the vehicle 180 degrees. 6. Maneuvers apparatus back through original opening. C 7. No portion of the apparatus extends over the boundary lines of the space at anytime. C 8. Uses a spotter while backing. 9. Utilizes mirrors while backing. 10. Appropriately judges apparatus distance. 11. Uses a spotter. 8
8 EVD SKILL SHEET # 6 Driving Operations/Response Performance Evaluation: The evaluator shall verify the candidate has the ability to operate a fire apparatus safely, efficiently, and within applicable state and local laws on a predetermined public way route. JPR: 4.3.1, 4.3.6, 4.3.5, Instructor s Statement Tasks: Operate a fire apparatus in compliance with applicable state and local laws and departmental rules and regulations. The candidate, given a fire apparatus and a predetermined route on a public way or a simulated route that incorporates the maneuvers and features listed below, shall operate the fire apparatus so that the listed performance steps are completed. NOTES TO INSTRUCTOR: The instructor should evaluate an area in the departments jurisdiction which can expose the students to the elements listed below. If the department s jurisdiction does not have one of the listed features (i.e. railroad crossing), it is acceptable to omit that part of the scenario and adjust the students score accordingly. Equipment Required: Fire apparatus, simulated route, or predetermined route on public way 1. Check and adjust driver s seat as needed. 2. Check and adjust vehicle mirrors as needed. C 3. Fasten enger restraint(s) before putting vehicle in motion. C 4. Fasten driver restraint before putting vehicle in motion. 5. Maneuvers four left turns properly. 6. Maneuvers four right turns properly. 7. Maneuvers urban business street or urban two lane road properly, one mile in length. 8. Maneuvers through three intersections, two that require a complete stop. 9. Maneuvers through at least one curve properly. 10. Maneuvers railroad crossings properly. 11. Maneuvers entrance and exit to limited access highway properly. 12. Maneuvers two lane changes on limited access highway properly. 13. Maneuvers downgrades steep enough to require downshift/braking properly. 14. Maneuvers upgrades steep enough to require gear changing to
9 maintain speed. 15. Maneuvers through low clearance/bridge properly. 16. Maneuvers on an environmentally affected road surface. C 17. Operates vehicle safely and in accordance with applicable laws by maintaining safe following distances, maintaining control of vehicle, and traveling at safe speeds given road/weather/traffic conditions. 18. Maintains awareness of vehicle gauges and instruments. 19. Deploys, energizes and monitors the system and equipment. (Equipment and systems include but are not limited to: electric generation equipment, floodlighting systems, air compressors, air cascade systems, hydraulic rescue tool systems, power reels for air or hydraulic hose, etc) 20. Recognizes and corrects system problems. 13
