saskatchewan.ca Train Safety Activity Booklet
Welcome! This Train Safety Activity Book is produced by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure, in partnership with the Western Canadian Short Line Railway Association. We hope that you will work through the activities in this book and learn about train safety. Most injuries and deaths due to rail accidents and incidents can be prevented. Let's work together to help you stay safe. 1
Important Railway Signs This sign means railway tracks are crossing a road. You should LOOK both ways and LISTEN for trains before crossing railway tracks. These flashing lights and ringing bells mean a train is coming! You should STOP and WAIT for the train when the lights are flashing and the bells are ringing. 2
Important Railway Signs This sign means you should STAY OUT of a train yard. It is DANGEROUS to play in this area or to walk through a train yard. This sign tells you that there is a railway crossing on the road ahead. You should be ready to LOOK both ways and LISTEN for trains. STOP if a train is coming. 3
Safety Rules 1. Obey all railway signs and signals. 2. Cross tracks only at proper railway crossings. 3. Always stop, look and listen before crossing railway tracks. 4. Do not ride or climb on railway cars. 5. Walk quickly across the tracks when it is safe to go. 6. Never play on or near railway tracks. 7. Do not throw things at a train or place things on railway tracks. 8. Crawling under or over railway cars is very dangerous. 9. A railway yard is not a safe place to play. 4
