46 4-2 TRACTOR PREPARATION WARNING BE SURE REMOTE COUPLERS ARE SECURELY MOUNTED TO TRACTOR FOR PROPER FUNCTION OF SAFETY DISCONNECT FEATURE Prior to attaching the implement the tractor should be prepared as follows: a. Check fluid level in the tractor hydraulic system reservoir. Additional fluid may be required after charging the implement hydraulic circuits. b. Add front frame and wheel weights as needed to maintain stability on hillsides and when transporting the implement. c. Tractor tires should be inflated and ballast added according to the tractor operator s manual. d. Use a tractor with adequate horsepower. See Section 2 for specifications Drawbar a. If tractor is equipped with a swinging drawbar, allow drawbar to swing. Lock drawbar in center position for transport only. b. Adjust tractor drawbar height to approximately 17 (45 cm) above ground, as measured from top of drawbar. 4-3 WING PACKER PREPARATION Before taking your implement to the field the following procedures should be done. a. Check all hardware for proper tightness. When the machine is new the hardware should be checked every few hours of operation. b. Replace worn, broken, or damaged ground tools. c. Check tires for proper inflation. Pressure must be equal in both tires. Check the wheel lug bolts. d. Check hoses, fittings and cylinders for any fraying of hoses or leakage. Replace as required. e. Lubricate the machine. f. Adjust the hitch to the correct height of the tractor drawbar (See Sections 3-12 and 3-13). WARNING NEVER USE YOUR HANDS TO LOCATE A HYDRAULIC LEAK. USE A PIECE OF WOOD OR CARDBOARD. HYDRAULIC FLUID ESCAPING UNDER PRESSURE CAN PENETRATE THE SKIN CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY. WARNING OPENINGS IN THE SKIN AND MINOR CUTS ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO INFEC- TION FROM HYDRAULIC FLUID. IF IN- JURED BY ESCAPING FLUID, SEE A DOCTOR AT ONCE. WITHOUT IMMEDI- ATE MEDICAL TREATMENT, SERIOUS INFECTION CAN OCCUR. 4-6

47 4-4 ATTACHING TO TRACTOR With the packer on a level surface and the transport wheels blocked: Back the tractor into the hitch clevis so that the holes align Set the tractor brakes and turn the tractor engine off Install an agricultural hitch pin with a locking device. The hitch pin must be rated for the size tractor pulling the implement. Secure the locking device. Place tongue jack in transport position Connect the hydraulic lines to the tractor. WARNING BE SURE NO ONE IS BETWEEN TRAC- TOR AND IMPLEMENT DURING HITCH- ING OPERATION WHILE TRACTOR EN- GINE IS RUNNING. 4-5 UNHITCHING FROM TRACTOR Locate the packer and tractor on a level surface Lock in transport position and fold the wings. Install blocks ahead of and behind the packer ground wheels After relieving the hydraulic pressure, disconnect the hydraulic lines from the tractor Lower the tongue jack and place blocks under the hitch so that the hitch pin is free. 4-6 FIELD OPERATION The correct preparation of the seedbed can be one of the most vital steps in the growing cycle Properly firming and sealing the soil before and after planting can result in increased yields Remove the hitch pin. WARNING BE SURE NO ONE IS BETWEEN TRAC- TOR AND IMPLEMENT DURING HITCH- ING OPERATION WHILE TRACTOR EN- GINE IS RUNNING The most effective soil preparation will occur when operating between four and six miles per hour This speed range will permit constant, maximum soil firming. 4-7

48 4-7 ROLLERS For maximum roller life, the rollers need to touch each other across the gangs. This adjustment is made by loosening the u-bolts which attach the bearing standards. The bearing lock collars must also be loosened. Bump the standard and the u-bolt toward the center of the machine until the rollers touch each other. Retighten the bearing lock collars. Retighten the u-bolts to at least 200 foot pounds of torque. Be careful not to put an end thrust or side load on the bearings (See Figure 4-2) This adjustment will need to be made twice during the first 200 acres of operation. After the initial adjustments have been made, inspect the packer routinely and adjust rollers when necessary. 4-8 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND REFLECTORS Figure 4-2 Rollers All Wing Packers are designed to meet current industry location and visibility standards for conspicuity reflectors (See Figure 3-7). 4-8

49 4-9 TRANSPORTING THE PACKER Prior to Transport a. Utilize transport chains. The transport chain should be adjusted so that the tongue of the towed machine will not touch the ground in case of loss of the hitch pin. b. Place SMV emblem into the holder. c. Insect the two red reflectors on the rear corners of the machine and the amber reflector on the front left corner of the machine. Be sure all three are in place and free from dust and other obstructions. d. Make sure light harness is properly connected and all the lights are visible and working. e. Secure the tractor drawbar so that it will not swing during transport. Figure 4-3 Lockup Pin for Transport Procedure For Transporting a. After the packer has been properly hitched to the tractor: b. Fold wings to transport position. c. Raise the machine and install pin in cylinder lug to lock the machine in the raised position (See Figure 4-3) Returning To Work Position After Transporting a.
