19 Ми-8МСБ ELECTRICALLY-OPERATED PYROTECHNIC DEVICES - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 1. General Electrically-operated pyrotechnic devices include the fire-extinguishing system ППЗ (Passive Fire Protection) squibs. 2. Description and operation 2.1. Fire-extinguishing system squibs The fire-extinguishing system ППЗ squibs are intended to supply, when activated, fireextinguishing liquid from ОС-2 bottles to the compartments in fire. Two ОС-2М fire-extinguisher bottles of the main and alternate discharge with fireextinguishing liquid (freon 114В2) are installed on the right side in the main gearbox compartment. Four ГЗСМ fire-extinguisher squib control heads on each bottle and two squibs in each control head ensure supply of fire-extinguishing liquid under pressure from the bottle via the pipelines to the compartment in fire when any pair of the squibs is actuated. The main discharge bottle squibs are actuated by supply of 27 V pulse either from the automatic fire-extinguishing system, or from the MAIN DISCH MANUAL CONTROL button located on the center panel of the overhead electric panel. Alternate discharge bottle squibs are actuated by the button located over the panel СРАБОТ. БАЛЛОНЫ РУЧНОЙ ОЧЕРЕДИ (MANUAL DISCHARGE BOTTLES ACTUATED). In order to improve actuation safety, each fire-extinguisher squib control head is equipped with two squibs with separate power supply circuits for their electric primers. The squib electric circuits are tested for continuity by connecting relay windings to them. When the relay winding is actuated, power supply circuits of fire-extinguisher discharge annunciators located on the center panel of the overhead electric panel are interrupted (the lights are off). The relay windings are connected to the control head squibs by ОГНЕ. КОНТРОЛЬ ДАТЧИКОВ (FIRE DETECTOR CONTROL) switch located on the center panel of the overhead electric panel set in position КОНТРОЛЬ ДАТЧИКОВ (DETECTORS CONTROL). Illumination of КОНТРОЛЬ ДАТЧИКОВ (DETECTORS CONTROL) annunciator indicates trouble in the electric circuits of the respective squibs, as well as actuation of the squibs after control pulses are supplied to them. 27 Ми-8МСБ MECHANICALLY-OPERATED PYROTECHNIC DEVICES - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 1. General 26 mm signal flares are mechanically operated pyrotechnic devices used on the helicopter. 2. Description and operation Two signal flare electric launchers are installed on the port bow. Each launcher has four flares (red, green, yellow and white). To ensure correct loading of the launcher with flares of different colors, corresponding color marks are applied to the doors opposite the respective launcher tubes. The flare ejection is controlled from two control panels installed on the Left side panel of the overhead electric panel. The control panel mounts a switch, four buttons and a connector. The control panel provides for flares ejection either in single or in salvo (up to four flares at a time) by pushing the respective button on the control panel or several buttons simultaneously. The control panel switch should be switched on beforehand. When the button is pushed, a current pulse is fed through the contacts of the launcher panel and plate contacts of the flare magazine to the contacts of the electric squib-operated striker. The explosive charge is ignited in the striker. Under the action of gas, the striker hammer pin moves forward, punctures the shell bottom and pierces the primer, thus causing the firing. The launcher circuits are connected through РАКЕТЫ. СИРЕНА (FLARES. SIREN) circuit breaker located on the right circuit breaker panel of the overhead electric panel. EFFECTIVITY: ALL Page 1/2

The body consists of two side plates with welded inserts having guide grooves. Insert (1) with a radial groove is installed in the body. The insert can be displaced along the axis of the lock by means of handle (2) secured on the axle. The lock body (3) is pivotally connected to the tip of the hook-and-lock. To tie-down the cargo, the cable is passed along the radial guide grooves of the insert and the wedge lock body and is clamped at tensioning between the insert and the welded cover plates of the body. Lock-and-hook (Ref. Figure 4) consists of hook (3), retainer (4), bushings (5) and (8), coupling (7), spring (6), handwheel (2) and tip (1). Hook (3) is driven into bushing (8) and locked with a through pin. The bushing and the threaded part of hook has a slot for the tip of retainer. In the closed position, the end of retainer enters the slot and is held by coupling (7) with bushing (5) and spring (6). Driven into bushing (8) having RH internal trapezoidal thread is handwheel (2) with LH internal thread. Screwed into the handwheel is tip (1), which is pivotally connected to the wedge lock body. 115 Ми-8МСБ Bushing (8), the handwheel and the tip serve as a turnbuckle to adjust tension of the cable at rotation of the handwheel. Total travel of the turnbuckle is 100 mm. To tie down the vehicle, the hook-and-lock is attached to the tie-down ring on the cargo compartment floor, the cable is passed through the link or ring of the tied-down vehicle and is secured by the hook to the eye of the wedge lock insert. Then, the cable slack is taken up and the cable is tensioned by the turnbuckle. 1 - hook-and-lock; 2 - wedge lock; 3 - hook Figure 2 - Tie-down cable 1 - insert; 2 - handle; 3 - body Figure 3 - Cable wedge lock EFFECTIVITY: ALL Page 3

Throw-over cables Throw-over cables are used to to secure the slings of the cargo net. They consist of separate cable sections, dia. 8 mm, linked to an eye with coupling steel rings. The cargo net locks-andhooks are attached to the rings. The extreme ends of the throw-over cable are linked to the eyes with snap hooks by which the cable is secured to the tie-down rings on the helicopter cargo compartment floor Tie-down rings The tie-down rings are intended for increasing the length of the tie-down cable or for convenient coupling of the block-and-tackle with cargo having no towing devices. The tie-down rings are sections of cable of 8 mm diameter and 1.4 m length along the perimeter, ends of which are intertwisted Link with roller Link with roller (Ref. Figure 5) is intended to protect the tie-down cable against sharp bends and is used when the tie-down fitting rod being passed around has a diameter less than 35 mm. It includes a bent clevis with a roller installed between its ends on a quickrelease pin; the roller has a groove for the cable and a box to prevent the cable dropping out of the roller groove. EFFECTIVITY: ALL Page 4

117 Ми-8МСБ Figure 5 - Link with roller 2.5. Tie-down net The nets (Ref. Figure 6) are intended to attach small-size cargoes to the cargo compartment floor. They are twisted from flax rope, dia. 10 mm, and are edged with flax rope, dia. 14 mm. 14 slings are attached to the net perimeter. The net size is 1.3 x 2.2 m. Fitted to the free ends of the slings are snap hooks for securing the net to the tie-down rings on the cargo compartment floor. Figure 6 - Tie-down net The snap hook (Ref. Figure 7) provides for tensioning of the sling without making knots and releasing the cargo quickly. The snap hook includes hook (6) with clamp (3), retainer (7), holder (4) and bushing (1).
