4 HAPTER INTRODUCTION This manual was developed specifically for the machine you have purchased. The information, contained within, was prepared for your assistance in preparing, adjusting, maintaining and servicing your machine. More importantly, this manual provides an operating plan for safe and proper use of your machine. Major points of safe operation are detailed in the SAFETY chapter of this manual. Refer to the Table of Contents for an outline (by chapters) of this manual. Modern machinery has become more sophisticated and with that in mind, G E H L Company asks that you read and understand the contents of this manual COMPLETELY and become familiar with your new machine, BEFORE attempting to operate it. Furthermore, we recommend if this machine is resold that this manual accompany the unit. Our extensive Dealership network stands by to provide you with any assistance you may require, including genuine G E H L service parts. All parts should be obtained from or ordered through your G E H L Dealer. Give complete information about the part as well as the model number and the serial number of your machine. Record numbers, in space provided, as a handy record for quick reference. G E H L Company reserves the right to make changes or improvements in the design or construction of any part without incurring the obligation to install such changes on any unit previously delivered. Standard hardware torques appear in a chart at the end of the manual. Throughout this manual, information is provided which is set in bold type and introducd by the word NOTE. D Wheels are properly mounted and securely attached and Tires are properly inflated. D All Guards, Shields and ')ecals are in place and securely attached. o Serial number for this unit is recorded in space provided on this page and page 2. Hook the unit up to a 540 RPM tractor and test-run it while checking that proper operation is exhibited by all components. Check that: o The PTO Shaft turns freely while Shield is anchored. D All Drives Mechanisms are operating smoothly and properly adjusted. I acknowledge that pre-delivery service was performed on this unit as outlined. 10 8 BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THIS EQUIPMENT, READ AND STUDY THE FOLLOWING SAFETY INFORMATION. IN ADDITION, MAKE SURE THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL WHO OPERATES OR WORKS WITH THIS EQUIPMENT IS FAMILIAR WITH THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. Our Company always takes the operator and their safety into consideration when designing machinery and guards exposed moving parts for their protection; however, some areas cannot be guarded or shielded in order to assure proper operation. In addition, the operator's manual and decals on the machine warn you of further danger and should be read and observed closely. Please read the rules listed below for safe operation BEFORE you operate this equipment. MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE Work of any type on machinery is always more dangerous when the machine is operating. Unless otherwise expressly instructed to the contrary, BE FORE cleaning, adjusting, lubricating or servicing this unit, the following MANDATORY SAFETY SHUT-DOWN PROCEDURE should ALWAYS befollowed:. Disengage the tractor PTO. 2. Shut off tractor engine, remove key and take it with you. 3. Wait for all movement to stop. 4. Remove the Telescoping Drive and ALL Power con nections from the tractor. ONLY when you have taken these precautions can you be sure it is safe to proceed. Failure to follow the above procedure could lead to death or serious bodily injury! BE SURE that the Telescoping PTO Drive is securely attached to the tractor and Tedder shaft and that the Drive rotates freely inside the Telescoping Drive Shield Tubes! DO NOT engage PTO Drive to Tedder when outer wings are folded or when removable tines are in transport position. Flexible or Plastic-shielded Drive Tubes MUST be anchored to the draw-bar frame with the Tiedown Chain provided! CHAPTER 4 SAFETY BE SURE that the PTO Locking Coupler is properly engaged onto the tractor PTO shaft BEFORE starting the tractor engine! BE SURE ALL Guards, Shields and Doors are in place and properly secured BEFORE starting the tractor engine! Keep ALL Guards, Shields and Decals in place and properly secu red! BEFORE cleaning, adjusting, lubricating or servicing this unit, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE described herein! DO NOT allow minors and personnel, other than a qualified operator to be near this machine unless properly supervised! The G E H L Company does NOT sell replacement tires. In addition, tire mounting, service or inflation can be dangerous. Whenever possible, trained personnel should be called to service and/or mount tires, following the tire manufacturer's instruction! If you do NOT have such instructions, contact your tire dealer or the G E H L Company. In any event, to avoid possible fatal or serious injury, follow the safety precautions described in the Service chapter! ALWAYS follow state and local regulations regarding use of a safety chain and auxiliary lighting when towing farm equipment on public highways. BE SURE to check with local law enforcement agencies for your own particular regulations. Unless otherwise prohibited, use a Slow-moving Vehicle Emblem. Only a safety chain (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machines, in the event of separation of the primary attaching system. DO NOT exceed a maximum travel speed of 20 mph (32 kmh) and use a locking hitchpin while towing the machine! DO NOT attempt to clean, adjust or lubricate the machine when any part is in motion! DO NOT wear loose or baggy clothing when operating the machine! DO NOT open any Guards or Shields when the machine is running! Failure to follow these safety precautions can result in death or serious injury!

11 SAFETY DECALS ENGAGE LOCK PINS- TO SECURE THE WINGS BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO TRANSPORT MACHINE. FAILURE TO HEED CAN RESULT IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY OR CAUSE COSTLY BREAKDOWN. DO NOT WEAR LOOSE OR BAGGY CLOTHING AROUND THIS MACHINE AND KEEP HANDS, FEET AND CLOTHING AWAY FROM MOVING AND POWER DRIVEN PARTS. KEEP CHILDREN AND SPECTATORS OFF AND AWAY FROM MACHINE WHILE IT IS OPERATING. KEEP OFF UNIT UNLESS A SPECIFIED OPERATOR'S STATION IS PROVIDED. THE OWNER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON THE SAFE USE AND PROPER MAINTENANCE OF THIS MACHINE. DO NOT START, OPERATE OR WORK ON THIS MACHINE UNTIL YOU HAVE CAREFULLY READ AND THOROUGHLY UNDERSTAND THE CONTENTS OF THE OPERATOR'S MANUAL. WHEN TRAVELING ON PUBLIC HIGHWAYS OBEY ALL TRAFFIC LAWS CONCERNING LIGHTING, SLOW MOVING VEHICLE SIGNS, ETC. LIMIT SPEED TO 20 MPH AND USE A LOCKING HITCH PIN.

12 TRANSPORT OPERATION The following procedure should be practiced when transporting the Tedder. NOTE: The adjustable wheels should be placed in the rear position for transporting on highways. MODEL 24 NOTE: Steps and 2 will provide the minimum transport width for the Tedder. If your situation will tolerate the 0ft. machine width, the tine blades maybe left in place. In all cases follow step 3.. Activate PTO until the removable tine blades are to the outside. 2. Remove the three blades and store in brackets provided in back of draw-bar frame. See Figure Lift the Tedder front tines using Regulating Lever (A), Figure 5-3, until you have them even or slightly above the rear tines. The front tines must not contact the ground when transporting. MODEL 242 AND 243. Lift the Tedder front tines using Regulating Lever (A), Figure 5-3, until you have them even with or slightly above the rear tines. The front tines must not contact the ground when transporting. 2. Disengage outer wheels on wings by unlatching handle (T), Figure Loosen handle (B), Figure 5-2 and rotate wings to the rear. 4. Lock in position with pin (C), Figure 5-2. CHAPTER 5 A CAUTION: Never engage PTO Drive to Tedder when outer wings are folded or when removable tines are in transport position. OPERATING POSITION MODEL 24. Adjust regulating handle (A), Figure 5-3, until the front tines slightly touch the working surface. 2. If the three blades were removed, replace them on their discs. 0

13 MODEL 242 AND 243. Disconnect the wings from the transport position by unlatching pin (C), Figure Pivot arms forward and lock with handle (B), Figure Secure outer wheels in place by locking handle (T), Figure Adjust regulating handle (A), Figure 5-3, until the front tines slightly touch the working surface. FRONT OF TEDDER WHEEL IN FORWARD POSITION IMPLEMENT WHEEL REPOSITIONING. Locate handle (D), Figure Move handle down and pull away from spindle to unlock wheel shaft. 3. Place wheel to desired position and lock in place by repositioning handle (D). Fig. 5-4 FLUFFING (or TURNING) Place the implement wheels to the rear and operate at a slow speed. The optional speed reduction gear box will be required. Windrows may be turned (Fluffed) without destroying the windrows. TEDDING Place the implement wheels forward and operate at the normal speed. NOTE: For the best Tedding result, the wheels should be in the forward position, see Figure 5-4. Tedding may also be done with the wheels in the rearward position. DIRECTIONAL SPREADING. Lock the implement wheels either to the right or left, see last two illustrations on page 2, depending on the direction desired and operate at a normal speed. Fig. 5-5, ~I - I -.../ - Tractor PTO Shaft* 2 - Tractor Drawbar* 3 - Drawbar Pin Hole On or Near Center-line 4-4" (355 mm) for 540 RPM* 6" (405 mm) for 000 RPM, -3/8" Shaft * 20" (508 mm) for 000 RPM, -3/4" Shaft* 5-6 to 2" (50 to 300 mm) - 8" (203 mm) Standard* * Tractor MUST comply with ASAE Standard S203 TRACTOR HITCH ALIGNMENT (Figure 5-5) NOTE: By design, this GEHL machine can only be properly hooked-up to a tractor which has PTO and hitch dimensions conforming to ASAE standard S203. Position the tractor drawbar hitch hole centerline directly in line with the tractor PTO shaft. The front and rear position of the tractor drawbar hitch hole centerline MUST be correct to insure the correct Universal Joint relationship. The tractor drawbar hitch hole should be 4" (355 mm) from the rear of the 540 RPM tractor PTO shaft. & /

14 NOTE: Be sure the PTO shaft is locked on tractor PTO, the PTO shield is anchored to the Tedder Frame and the PTO shaft turns freely inside of shield. See Figure Page 2. OPERATING SPEED The speed of the tines may be reduced by using an optional speed reduction box. This will allow you to reduce the speed of the tines from PTO RPM to 68 RPM. The spreading effect of the crops can be regulated by varying the PTO speed of the tractor. Speeds vary based on crop conditions: Moisture content, density of crop and length of crop. The following chart gives approximate speeds for a crop of average length and density. First Time Over km/h (4-/2-5 mph) (High moisture content) Second Time Over.0-2 km/h (6-/2-7-/2 mph) Dry Crop...,. "... Reduce PTO speed Long, Heavy and Wet Crop..., Reduce forward speed, increase PTO speed If the Universal Drive Shaft has to be angled excessively, stop the tractor PTO shaft. OPERATING PATTERNS Refer to illustrations at right for operating patterns. TINE POSITION ADJUSTMENT The tines may be placed in two positions. The forward (aggressive) or retarded (less aggressive) position is determined by the assembly position of clip (U), Figure 7-2, Page 7. When Tedding, place tines in the forward position. When Raking, Fluffing or Turning place tines in the retard position. See Figure 7-3, Page 7. NOTE: The optional speed reduction gear box is required when Raking, Fluffing or Turning. NOTE: Work that produces windrows is done best with wheels in the rearward position. 15 MODEL 24 BLADE PLACEMENT MODEL 242 BLADE PLACEMENT Fig. 7-4 MODEL 24 Removable blades held by pins must be installed to the outside; if required to be removed for transport otherwise, it does not matter. MODEL 24,242 AND 243. Turn center housing over and attach Draw-Bar frame to top of center housing lugs (L), Figure 7-6, using a M6 x 60 Hex Cap Screw, (2) Flat Washers and a Lock Nut on each side. Place flat washers on inside of Draw-Bar frame. Draw-Bar must be able to pivot after assembly. Adjust lock nuts so this is possible. 2. Locating Adjusting Handle Assembly (M), Figure 7-6, and secure Yoke (N) to bottom lug of center housing using a M6 x 60 Hex Cap Screw and Lock Nut. 3. Secure Adjusting Screw (0) to Draw-Bar frame with a M6 x 80 Hex Cap Screw and Lock Nut. 4. If not previously assembled, attach Knob (P), Figure 7-6, to Handle Assembly with the long countersunk screw and lock nut. 5. Adjusting Handle Assembly must be free to pivot after mounting. 16 MODEL 242 AND 243 WING, WHEEL AND BLADE ASSEMBLY. Place Lateral Wing Shaft Stub (Q), Figure 7-7, through pivot (R) and secure with a snap ring. 2. Position wing in the operating position and lock handle (S), Figure 7-8. Assemble two tine blades to bearing di;sc. \ 3. Place blades in correct operating position as shown in Figure 7-5. To change position remove roll pin (H), Figure 7-3 or 7-4, to lower bearing disc and relocate disc. 4. Fasten disc in correct position to the wing body with a piece of wire. 5. Remove roll pin in axle shaft and attach wheel axle. Wheel shaft spindle must be pointed to the outside. See Figure Repeat assembly on remaining side. 7. Lock latch handle (T), Figure 7-9, when wings are in operating position only. NOTE: If material wrapping is encountered on Spindle Assemblies they may be changedbymoving Spindles to the opposite positions shown in Figure 7-0. The center line of wheel must be behind the center line of disc, for Fluffing and Turning,(rear wheel position) Fig

17 REAR VIEW Fig. 7- DIRECTION OF TRAVEL VIEWING FROM THE REAR TINE ASSEMBLY. Install remaining tine blades as shown in Figure 7-2 and ttach the tines to tine blades one rotor at a time. Refer to Figure Assemble tines to rotor and 3, if applicable, with the bend to the right. 4. Assemble tines to rotor 2 and 4, if applicable, with the bend to the left. 5. Secure tines to end of blades with () clip (U), Figure 7-2, () M2 x 45 Hex Cap Screw and () Hex Lock Nut. Torque screws to 00 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). 6. Tines should be perpendicular to the ground and tine blade. 7. Make sure all tine clips (U), Figure 7-2, are installed the same. The curved portion on the tine clips should back up the curved tine wire. TINE POSITION ADJUSTMENT The tines may be placed in two positions. The forward (aggressive) or retarded (less aggressive) position is determined by the assembly position of clip (U). Figure 7-2. When Tedding, place tines in the forward position. When Raking, Fluffing or Turning place tines in the retard position. See Figure 7-3. NOTE: The optional speed reduction gear box is required when Raking, Fluffing or Turning. TINE SAVER ASSEMBLY An optional spring tine keeper strap can be obtained and assembled to the tines to prolong tine life. If a tine breaks it will be held in place by the neighboring tine and thus cannot be lost. Secure as shown in Figure 7-2, using (2) M6 x 25 Cap Screws, Flat Washer and Lock Nut. 18 TEDDER ASSEMBLY TO TRACTOR. Attach to tractor with a locking hitch pin. 2. Check to make sure the PTO Tube Shields are orientated correctly. The Female Tube Shield should be on the PUSH-BUTTON END of the PTO SHAFT, with the Symbol of the Tractor to the Front. Shields may be removed by removing the screw (ref. #8 page 32) and rotating the Tube Shield (# or 3) while holding the Cone Shield (#7) still and aligning notches in Cone Shield and Tube Shield. Then pull off the Tube Shield Assembly. 3. Attach the Clutch End of the PTO Shaft to the Tedder PTO Input Shaft. Locate the Guard Chain and install "S" hook into PTO Shield and secure PTO Shield to Tedder Frame. 4. Attach the Push Button Lock End of the PTO Shaft to the Tractor PTO Shaft. ACCESSORIES SPEED REDUCTION BOX CHAPTER 8 NOTE: Not for use with machines before Serial Numbers Listed. Model 24 S?v 523 Model 242 SI N 636 Model 243 SI N 793 "A" An Optional Speed Reduction Box is available for your Tedder. The speed of the tines may be reduced from RPM to 68 RPM. The rib on Gear Box (item #22 on Page 6) may have to be ground down to allow the Speed Reduction Box to fit back far enough onto the front of the gearbox horn and be secured with bracket (A), Figure 8-. ASSEMBLY. Attach Box Bracket (A), Figure 8-, to the Gear Box. 2. Remove Cap Screw (B) from Center Housing. 3. Slide Reduction Gear Box over input spline shaft and attach bracket (A) to center housing. 4. Tighten the lower bolt and jam nut against housing. 5. Check for grease in the Speed Reduction Gear Box.
